Hidden toolbar will not respond in XP
« on: June 26, 2009, 04:36 PM »
Help! (please)

For several years, I have used a hidden toolbar on the left side of the screen on a computer configured with XP. Now however, when I move the mouse to the left side of the screen, the toolbar will not emerge. When I try to put another toolbar there, it tells me I cannot because I have a toolbar there. I cannot find anyplace to close the toolbar or manipulate it in any way. Can someone please tell me how can I get the toolbar to work or close it?

Thanks very much!

Right click taskbar.
Is it in the toolbar list with 'quick launch' and the others?

Good question. I should have said in my post that it is NOT listed there.

Hmmm... as a person who also uses a toolbar on the left side of the screen (now that I'm using Windows 7 I have the whole Task Super Bar on the left) I can appreciate how much of a drag this must be.

What happens if you try to move the Task Bar over there?

Did you create the toolbar by dragging a folder over there? Can you delete the folder? I figure renaming it might not be good enough.

Maybe starting in Safe Mode or logging in as an Administrator might help.

Does the toolbar have a name that you could use to search the registry? I used-to use a folder named "Shortcuts" which probably wouldn't help too much in a search, but if it's called something like "Quick Access Applications" you might be able to find something in the registry pretty quickly.

Yes, I had done nearly all the things you suggested (I did not think of Safe Mode), but none worked. This time though, in addition to dragging the Task Bar over, I tried setting it to auto-hide. As with other toolbars, when I attempted to do so, it complained that it could not do so because there was already a hidden toolbar there and left it not hidden. In addition though, IT POPPED THE HIDDEN TOOLBAR UP AS A NON-DOCKED WINDOW, which I could then delete.

Thanks for all the suggestions and inspiration to get rid of it Hirudin!

LOL. OH, I realized after I wrote my message that I had also changed the name of the folder. That might have made a difference as well. So, now you can feel EVEN SWEETER. Seriously, thanks again for the suggestions Hirudin.
