I have intentionally avoided Adobe Air due to its closed nature, much the same as I avoided .NET prior to the rise of Mono. Perhaps this will turn the tables on that

I doubt that. 

If they can back Project Moonlight then i don't think there is any harm to Mono.

Make no mistake, Moonlight is just another way for Microsoft to get their tentacles inside Linux. THAT is why they're backing it.
