When politicians bloviate about a “higher purpose,” it’s time to watch your wallets, hide the kids and lock your doors (front, back and refrigerator).
- I had to smile at this. It was written by a Filipina who is a US citizen and journalist.
(The Filipino people suffered enormously at the hands of successive political "leaders" and BS operators, over the years and during US economic colonisation, and they know whereof they speak.)

These Delivery Drivers Had One Job And Failed

I can relate.

I've got a weird doorbell that will immediately silence itself when you release the button, and also takes about a second of holding it down before it starts making the "ding dong" sound. This means that most people who just press and release the button never actually make a sound. I put a sign out by the doorbell telling people to hold the doorbell for at least 2 seconds or knock loudly. I've had an unusually large number of deliveries the past few weeks and only a single time was there a ring of the doorbell.

I wonder if it's a new(ish) policy to just drop off the package and leave.

I get a disproportionate number of packages, and I can say that yes unless it is needed for a signature, in my area, everyone just drops and dashes.

So, you fling a comment towards the wife and then you need to run....do I understand that correctly?  :P

I wish they'd ring before they ran. I don't care if they stick around for me to open the door. It just would be nice to know something was dropped off.

@Deozaan:
You could buy a cheap IP camera and let it mail you when motion has been detected. There are usually a few (interval) screenshots included with the message. You could then make a specific alert in your mail client whenever that camera sends you a message. If you already have an somewhat automated home, you might even be able to create audio/visual alerts this way.

Problem solved.  ;)

Oddly enough I've just done this with a RasPi 2B running Kerberos, works really well.

I get notifications on my phone from UPS, USPS, and Amazon, whenever a package is delivered. Amazon even sends me a photo of the package sitting in my hallway.

And Amazon has their own contractors that deliver in my area. I also have Amazon Prime, and their app installed on my phone. Not sure if there is anything else that one has to do to get alerts when one of their contractors drops off a package.

Re: silly humor - Musk to Mars! edition.
« Reply #5648 on: November 26, 2018, 07:50 AM »

Transcript:
0:00 Mike Allen: "You're forty-seven. What is the likelihood that you
0:02 personally will go to Mars?" Elon Musk: "70 percent."

Some people (not me, you understand) might say that, regardless of how he calculated the 70 percent,  Musk is already living on another planet anyway, and if he does move to Mars, then it can't be soon enough for the rest of us, but I couldn't possibly comment.

Mind you, if his predictions regarding the hardships of life on a Mars mission are anything to go by, it sounds like the potential to survive might be greater than, for example (say), getting bogged down in a subterranean water-filled cavern in northern Thailand...    :o

Thanks!  Very useful!  I'm surprised that USPS doesn't socialize that more!
