World of Goo - Indie Game with Great Reviews?
« on: October 16, 2008, 06:44 AM »
This new game immediately reminded me of this long popular thread on DC forum about the free flash game "Fantastic Contraption".

But it looks quite a bit more involving in terms of storyline, humour, graphics.  Looks pretty impressive and the reviews are positively glowing.  Cheap and nice that it's a real indie developed game.

Anyone tried it yet?

from http://evo-gamer.com...world-of-goo-review/:
"I myself gasped at a few points at the sheer brilliance of what I saw in front of my eyes. Words cannot describe how good this game is."

I pre-paid for it a couple of months ago I was that impressed. Mostly finished the full version by now and not the slightest bit disappointed. It's amazing how even late into the game it's still introducing new concepts and almost reinventing itself.

I highly recommend it

I've played it a bit and I'm considering throwing money after the full version - it's pretty funny, even if it can be somewhat frustrating sometimes. Unfortunately, it seems that it's not available for european STEAM users until next year, so they probably won't get my money after all - I hate regional locks and artifical release delays.

Bought it it yesterday and I am VERY pleased by the difficultly, the physics and the presenetion.

It is REALLY hard. It has 50 levels but it gets HARD after the first 10, however, it is the FUN kind of hard. You have to think, to tinker and to try different options. That's what's great about physics games.

It is essentially the strangest combo between "Bridge Builder" and "Gish". It is funny, slick, with pretty graphics and great sound but in the end, you essentially build structures with different materials.

It is not a game for everyone, but just the kind I'd suggest for anyone to try because you just might love it.

All in all, it is an awesome game and well worth the 20$.

I bought it to support the cause -- i can't say i love it but i didn't really enjoy playing Fantatsic Contraption either.  I definitely do appreciate the polish and love that went into the game though.  And i think if you enjoyed Fantastic Contraption flash game you will probably like this a lot.

I hate regional locks and artifical release delays.

The copy I got was just an exe installer, no codes or DRM. I think you can get that same version by buying direct from their web site.

Hmm, that could be an option. I sorta prefer getting small games through STEAM (single point of failure, sure, but also means not having to make purchasing accounts at a zillion places). I might take a look at other purchasing options later today, since I do want to support a good cause :)

Like mouser says, there's a lot of love and polish in this game. I really love the artwork and all.

Is there any way to test the game before actually buying it ?

I believe there is (or is going to be) a demo version featuring the first episode of gameplay.

This is where World of Goo originated from:

I've had these on my computer for the past few years. You can find other fun stuff there as well, such as Attack of the Killer Swarm.

There is a demo version downloadable somewhere (http://2dboy.com/for...ndex.php?topic=378.0) , and also on Steam if you already have an account.

PS : I bought a license, this game is really great !

I enjoyed Fantastic Contraptions but not enough to buy the full version.

However, I just played a few levels of World of Goo and you guys are quite correct - the playability is fantastic! I just purchased it and look forward to spending some down-time with it.

Heck, I might even let my 7-year-olds try it. Then again, maybe not - I probably won't ever get my computer back!  ;)

The game is also supposed to appear on Wii , using download....  So your kids could use a Wii, and you would keep your PC...  ;D

It's been on Wii for a few weeks now. That's how I'm playing it.

I did as well, mainly due to the fact that doing it this way means that all of the money goes directly to the developers :)

It's quite cool and impressive, and very well done..  I did however get a bit bored and stopped playing after the middle of chapter 2, but on the other hand these kinds of construction games aren't really my genre of choice, so that's really not a knock on the game.  Still feel good about supporting an indie developer

The current weekend deal on Steam is offering World of Goo for 75% off (which is $5 for the game).

I bought and completed World of Goo, and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the experience.

Anyone who doesn't buy a copy for $5 is a fool! (IMHO)

You will have to install STEAM, yes. And you can install steam on several computers and run the game there.

Ok thanks :)

I don't really like the idea of using a particular program to install and run games but i'll give it a try (after all it's only five dollars).

I used to feel the same, but I kinda like STEAM - it's very convenient.

I've started growing quite fond of steam for the very reason of convienience, it's easy to use, and if you like you can have it run at startup. You can link all non-steam games to the Games window for a quick list of all your toys. :) Plus, as Deozaan pointed out, they usually have great deals on some pretty hot/popular games. (Every weekend if I remember correctly)
