Requesting Ideas for DonationCoder Podcast #7
« on: September 15, 2008, 03:10 PM »
*cough* Testing, testing, teeestiiiiiiiiiiiiing... One, two, three, *cough*

Hello everyone, this is scannie here. I have decided to take the dust off the DonationCoder.com podcast, and try to organize a new episode!

I'd appreciate any ideas for subject matter, topic suggestions, offers to contribute a segment, etc!

Is this a joke? Hope not. . . I miss the DC Podcast!

Add it to Zune/iPod -- maybe it'd be enough to pressure you into keeping-it-going.

It might be helpful to reflect on the reasons that the original podcast proved hard to keep producing:

1) too few people willing to record segments
2) no one person who loved making creating the podcasts -- i believe that this is one of those things that really needs one or two people who in their hearts have secretly always wanted to have their own radio show.
3) very uneven recording quality and volume control -- made it less pleasant to listen to.

Nothing I can do about that :(

<3 radio, sound editing, and DJing. I'm up to it :)

Don't worry about that!

Another issue is whether there should be some more structure and focus than we had in the past.  Mainly this was just a matter of we put on the show anything anyone submitted.. That has it's own charm, especially for those of us who are on the site all the time -- it's just fun to hear other regulars speak.  But on the other hand it may not have much value for non-regulars.

What might be cool to find some kind of "hook", some theme or format that would make for a sustainable podcast that could be produced once a month.

Some ideas: keep the podcasts SHORT.  15-20 minutes in length.  anything more is too hard to make and listen to.

You know what would be cool: Something like the McGloughlin Group but for software (see http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=oSqsBfBCW7k).  Basically a heated group discussion on new software and hardware/technology.  Someone would have to figure out how to record such a phone meeting though..  Seems difficult.

Really? My favorite weekly/twice monthly podcasts are in the 1.5-2 hour range, some times longer.  Though that requires a more dedicated team. Plenty of segments/interviews, but regular "DJ"'s filling inbetween.  The key, I think, isn't even so much your hook or your content but continuous, familiar voices delivering the hook.

I will cross my fingers for this idea. Maybe it will even bit Channel9 from Microsoft ;)

BTW 15-20 minutes might be not enough for hot discussions IMHO.

I am not much familiar but maybe using TeamSpeak for meeting could be efficient? IIRC it works pretty well for multi-user chats but I don't know is it possible to record those.
In worst case scenario: you can just redirect your sound card's output to input (simple jack-jack cable) ;)

Just a comment, unless you want 11khz mono 16kbps mp3, i'll have to step down if we're doing the realtime approach. Segments for me please.

I didn't mean realtime stream, I'm still talking about a podcast. "live" DJ interaction really is no different from a segment in that it's recorded, and edited to fit around other segments.  It differs from other segments perhaps only in that it is outlined rather than outright scripted, maybe?

The DC community is full of enthusiastic, spirited persons with a tremendous breadth of knowledge on the local subject matter . . . of course, convincing such people to do it is, as we've seen before, not necessarily an easy thing to do.

(And no, I won't even pretend to take a high attitude, here, I didn't contribute to the podcasts in the past in anyway. But I sure enjoyed them. I'm selfish, I want more.)

Is this "11kHz..." limitation of TS or did I misunderstand something?

What about Skype? Can you do conference calls using Skype?

Also, I think 15-20 minutes is a SHORT podcast. Too short. I'd like them to be at least 30 minutes or longer. Of course, that's really easy for me to say as someone who hasn't committed to submitting content.

As far as topics or themes, we could revive a few old ideas that sort of puttered out. For example, there was the Cody Club where each month you were given an assignment.

We could have a complaint/compliment segment, where someone gets to complain about something that drives them nuts or cast praises on good things they love.

We could have a section near the beginning where you highlight DC news items or interesting threads. Or a Member highlight/interview each time. That could be kind of interesting how that works out.

webcomics weekly podcast thingy has a panel of comic artists using skype (sometimes they drop out of the conversation and have to call back in), so it appears skype will work somehow.

they do sometimes have uneven sound levels across the panel, which might indicate it is more tricky to get perfect levels as these guys have been doing it quite a while, so you'd expect them to have figured all that out by now.

what if the podcast was mainly a series of short segments where various people on DC talked about what they were up to?
nudone and timns could talk about their latest webcomics
other people could talk about their websites, etc

What about a 5-minute segment from Mouser talking about his philosophy and hopes for DC?

(No, Jesse, 5 minutes of no voice, accompanied by off-mic a/c repair SFX won't do.)

I kinda like this PodCast and its format around technology:
http://twit.tv/ttg489

Could be a good guide for what DC's podcast should be.

(good quality and interesting to listen to)
