Why do children love CAPS LOCK?
« on: May 23, 2008, 10:37 PM »
OK, this question has been boggling my mind for a year or so now...

Why in the world must little kids ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS HAVE CAPS LOCK ON? It drives me insane!

My sister, she had to type a 3 page report (with images) for her homework assignment for a class. The first page was entirely in CAPITALS. ARGH! Why??!??

My next door neighbor's kid does the same thing. And a friend of mine used to do it a few years back. Why do little kids love caps?

My only theory is that it is easier to read, and it matches the way the letters look on they keyboard. But... still...

If your sister is old enough to have to type a 3 page report, I wouldn't consider her a "kid" or "child" when it comes to being able to control the caps lock button.

As for why she does it... I suspect it's a lot like the Tootsie Pop Mystery: The world may never know.

Probably it is easier to write, considering that all the characters are capitals on the keyboards. I think kids learn capitals first. That is what I remember from my first years in school

I teach 6th graders at a school where all the students are issued laptops.  For many of them, caps lock is the only way to know to get capital letters.  They will hit it, type the first letter of the work, then hit caps lock again.  Many times, they would forget to turn it off.  It took a lot of work to teach them that all they need to do to produce a capital is hold down shift while typing the letter.

That's nothing: I had a teacher who didn't just use caps-lock excessively, but also used Comic Sans and NUMEROUS EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!!!

In fact I'm more upset by adults who are not using uppercase letters at the beginning of sentences or writing "I" as "i"... Sounds familiar?  :P

The teachers from my technical school were a lot more strict. For any grammatical and/or spelling and/or formatting error one full point less for the report you created....yep, no more A's for them youngsters anymore.

Their reasoning was that you have to be able to write a report that had to be readable by anyone in the chosen field of the profession (from the technical person till the chairman of the board). Not being able to write in a proper fashion will lead to disrespect from your peers (and people higher in the "food chain") as well.

Ah well, the inability to write correctly with the latest generation (script kiddies)....makes it quite easy to recognize the spam they send out to mailboxes. I sometimes have a good laugh at what is written to lure me into something  ;)

Leet or occasionally misspellings / errors are not bad. The most irritating situations are these when adult people are trying to sound like kids. I understand that IF you've got a girlfriend it might be sweet sometimes, but not for whole of the time (for god's sake).

The other thing what can be irritating is making intentional orthography / grammar errors. I understand that Polish language can be hard to learn. I understand that some English phrases cannot be translated correctly, but writing Polish words like it was an English one is what makes me angry.

i.e.
"Oh my God!" means "Boże!" in Polish which sound like "boshe". It sounds similar. Unfortunately: many people write it "bosh" instead of proper version using IM clients. I know that education system got worse BUT these idiots live in Poland whole their lives and spent about 10 years in schools learning how to avoid such errors...

And a head-shot for the end: same people are using so many smileys that in real life they probably would break their necks.

Cant understand the kids using caps lock... but I use caps lock every day.  It makes drafting a lot easier.

I took drafting (with a 63% at the end of the class...). Very helpful in that type of work, but outside of drawings and plans...

Yeah, it's easier to read.

Not. All-caps is the hardest to read.

long spans of text in all upper-case are harder to read because of the absence of the ascenders and descenders found in lower-case letters, which can aid recognition.

the worst type of small-print is in all caps
cause as you say, it's more difficult to read (scientifically proven to be)
I dont see it that often, but it probably means there's something very important in there ;D

I think it's because they're too young to drive. Once they get a car, they stop doing the all caps thing and just leave their left turn signal permanently on.

A few decades more and they wear a flat cap and gradually sink below the level of the steering wheel!
