I remember, years ago, watching episodes of Star Trek Next Generation on my computer. I was watching them at 2x real time. The player I was using adapted the audio so it just sounded like people were talking twice as fast instead of becoming chipmunk speak.

I have some HowTo videos, for example from ShowMeDo, that I want to watch a second, or third, or fourth time, to remind myself how something is done, but I don't want to do so at the slow pace that is necessary for a first viewing.

A preferable solution would be free or open source. Probably a plugin for something like VLC Media Player.

Anybody know of any such solution?

KMPlayer should do this. well, it does it with most videos, not sure about ALL videos.

KMPlayer (shift++) gives me the chipmunk effect.

Try Winamp with the Pacemaker plugin as a last resort - it allows you to increase the tempo without affecting pitch, does it really well for audio files. I tried it with some videos and had mixed results mainly coz I use KMPlayer for video and Winamp does not care for my codecs. When the videos did play the pitch sounded normal.

Edit: 200% limit, unless they've updated the plugin.

PowerDVD can do this up to 3x speed. Not a cheap one, though. (Using version 5, not sure about its successors.)

So KMPlayer doesn't work. PowerDVD cost way to much to use for just that feature. Anything else out there?

ALShow does it up to 2x. It's free too.

Thanks Renegade. That does the trick.

The movies are in FLV format, so I need to convert them first, but once they are AVIs they work great.

They have an FLV codec available in the ALShow codec center, but it may be a bit dated... Worth a try though. http://codec.alshow.co.kr/page/en I think... Could be wrong there. Check the forums at www.altools.com for it.

i've just tried KMPlayer with a few .flv files to see if i got the chipmunk effect.

seems to work okay for me, i.e. no chipmunk effect when watching 2x and 3x playback.

if you are getthing the chipmunk effect it's probably because the "regular tone" setting isn't enabled in the playback options.

nudone's right. KMPlayer does allow this. I had 'time stretching' disabled, works well once you enable it.

glad you found it, nosh.

1: you can also access the control by clicking on the "tools" button on the main display (if you've got the default skin loaded).

2: then click the "playback" triangle button on the small control panel that appears.

3: you'll then have access to the "speed control" settings and the "regular tone" toggle.
