I'm a fan of instanteous search tools like, Powermarks, Find and Run Robot, Yahoo Desktop Search Programs, Seek (which I used before Find and Run Robot) http://home.ripway.com/2004-10/188589/

And here's another one I suggest : Handyfind http://www.handykeys.com/

Some of you may find it useful, like help you look for a needle in a haystack on a webpage, Microsoft Word, Emails and more.

Unfortunately it does not work in Firefox (which already have a better search than IE, though not quite as good as HandyFind http://www.handykeys.com/  and it's Donationware.

I have been using it for several weeks now and it's quite amazing, the speed of the search and it easily allows you to move on to the next search via the keyboard. Very good for keyboard freaks - I'm one of them.

It works very well, but just a word of caution on a bug. It places an icon in the system tray which I think it's for configuration purposes. For some reason, I can right click it but it kind of hangs on me after that- which means I cannot configure it to change some settings. And I may even have to reboot.

But in its default mode, it already works like a dream if you use IE. I have yet to email the author about this particular bug.

If anyone of you try the program and experience the same bug, do let me know.

 :D

Update of apparent bug : The author has responded to me and I terminated as many resident programs as I could and this time, there's no hanging. It could be some other programs causing a conflict.

For whatever reason it's search function sometimes kicked in even if I didn't hit the hotkey combination :-/ Since I didn't use it THAT often I stopped using it for now.

I'll check it out.. thanks :)

I've long been looking for something that could spell-check on the fly, anywhere where text is entered.. and haven't found anything yet. Spell-check, and, well, maybe such things as stored texts which one could activate with keywords... like, for example, if you type "btw" that it would actually put in "by the way". In some cases that could be very useful :)

$50! Yeah right. I have heard that it's great, but the price is outrageous.

yeah it's a pretty impressive program but too expensive.

i hope that clipboard help+spell will eventually perform the ability to spell in any control similarly to as-u-type.

This is even better than asutype.  It expands the word automatically.

This has been mentioned before here with some problems (particuarly no development of bug fixes for 18 months) - hence the plea for an alternative ...

I didn't like the website from the outset.. so I never tried it out. With this added info I won't even bother. If there's something I can't accept in software it's using software that nobody is looking after.

Thanks CarolHaynes.

I have not tried these myself, but FWIW (probably not much):

====== begin quote ======
Occasionally you need to check the spelling of words in an application that does not include a spelling checker and you don't want to launch your word processor just for that. This is when tinySpell becomes handy. It is a small utility that allows you to easily and quickly check the spelling of words in any Windows application. tinySpell monitors your typing on the fly and alerts you whenever it detects a misspelled word. It also checks the spelling of every word you copy to the clipboard.
tinySpell installs itself in the system tray for easy access. It comes with an American-English dictionary containing more than 110,000 words.

Freeware, with donation if desired

Would AllChars do for keyword-activated expansion?

http://allchars.zwolnet.com

But that's two programs, of course.
