FARR freezing?
« on: February 28, 2008, 04:27 PM »
About 1/3 of the time FARR just freezes, text input stops working for a while, then everything you typed and your results drop in after about 30secs...

I have only the defaults plus one shortcut folder selected...

Any ideas?

Cheers!

I'm not sure, but here's another report of farr hanging.
That one was related to crazy firewalls/antivirus. Could it be related?

I guess there's a chance.. I'm running AVG free + PC Tools Firewall plus.

Also there's a couple of network drives on my PC that aren't connected...

About 1/3 of the time FARR just freezes

Is it really 1/3, or rather 1/6 ? Because farr will save changes to the ini file once every 6 launch/close. I'm still having problems with it. Less than before, but the firewall + antivirus combination is really slowing down the ini writing/reading

Do you have any UNC paths in your Recent Documents folder?  I remember there used to be a bug where it takes some time to time out if the UNC path is no longer reachable.

Hmm well I just cleared it and turned off 'recent docs' but it didn't seem to make any difference...

Seems to be 'most of the time' at the moment.. Got a feeling it's cos only half my network has been built so far (moved house) so there are dead shortcuts on my desktop etc.

Any way I can stop FARR from going for network links?

I'm not sure if it helps, but try checking the "always launch shortcuts directly instead of resolving links" option under the "general" tab.

jomtones, question: what version of FARR are you using?

i believe you have found the problem, why it is freezing.
it's hitting some shortcuts that are not resolving, and the search is pausing as it hits those shortcuts and tries to resolve them.

now, the new version of FARR is supposed to ignore network links, but it's possible you might have links that are fooling FARR into thinking they are local (mapped drives maybe), or some other circumstance that is confusing FARR into trying to resolve those links..
