Martin Luther made his 95 theses,
- so Calvin also made his: * 95ThesesByCalvin.txt (39.54 kB - downloaded 499 times.)

Here are a few:

1. Calvin: “Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.”

2. Calvin: “I say, if your knees aren't green by the end of the day, you ought to seriously re-examine your life.” [800]

3. Calvin: “Reality continues to ruin my life.”

4. Calvin: “People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realize how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.”

5. Calvin: “It's not denial. I'm just selective about the reality I accept.”

6. Calvin: “You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocketship underpants don't help.”

7. Calvin: “I asked Mom if I was a gifted child... she said they certainly wouldn't have paid for me.”

8. Calvin: “I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.”

Curt
what are the numbers after each of the 95?

I like this one:
17. Hobbes: “What fun is being *cool* if you can't wear a sombrero?” [189]

- which strip number it first appeared in.

Calvin didn't think it cool to wear a sombrero:

Calvin and Hobbes has got to be the best comic in the universe! Too bad it's so expensive.

When I was young, I had a few people tell me that I reminded them of Calvin.

An interesting essay from Bill Watterson on his life post C&H (written in 2001):

An absolutely up-to-date blog/tribute page to C&H (last entry 19 Nov 2007):
http://ignatz.brinkster.net/calvin.html

And finally, this collection of rarities, including the only unreprinted C&H strip:

Here's a somewhat off-topic question:  Does anyone here know how much money Watterson could have possibly made with his wildly successful comic, with syndication and everything?  I know Seinfeld makes a killing with syndication, how is it for Watterson?

Man, this thread got me thinking about the strip again.  I used to read it religiously in the bathroom from the age of about 8 until 21 (serious!).  Now, I don't read it anymore, but I remember how great that comic was.  You know, high society makes a big deal about "high" art (trivia: can anyone recognize the C&H strip I'm referencing here?) like paintings, architecture, acting, operas, etc.  But things like Watterson's comics are often ignored or disregarded in that respect.  The man created something that is beautiful, funny, intensely personal, and no less of a masterpiece than any other art this past century.  He's a genius.

So the one-day sale is over, but now the set is listed at "only" $90. So it was really only $20 off?

Low Price: The Complete Far Side @ Amazon
« Reply #10 on: March 26, 2008, 10:38 PM »
I didn't see any point in starting a new thread as the two are closely related.  The cousin to The Complete Calvin And Hobbes Collection (3 vol. set, which is still $94.50), The Far Side Collection (2 vol. set) has been steadily declining the last month, and is now down to $73.31 (less than half the retail price).  I bought it on Monday @ $77.16, but thanks to someones previous advice here, I started using PriceProtectr (www.priceprotectr.com), which is free, to track price drops on any Amazon purchases the days following any transaction, so in honoring their 30-day price change refund policy, Amazon refunded me $3.85 today. The set came very thoroughly packaged and looks fantastic.  Here's a link to the Far Side Collection @ Amazon:  http://www.amazon.com/dp/0740721135

I also picked up the Pre-History of The Far Side (an in-depth look at the development and history of this cartoon panel), which is great as well.

On a side note, maybe if DC had a referrer link account on sites like Amazon.com, people could use that when they post links like this, IF THEY CHOSE to.  Would be a non-intrusive way of providing a little extra support to DC.

My only problem with the concept of reincarnation is that I can never make up my mind.  Should I come back as Calvin or Hobbes?

When I was young, I had a few people tell me that I reminded them of Calvin.

I forbid my son to read the comic because he was too much like Calvin.  The ban didn't work because he was still Calvin, right down to playing Calvin ball.  When he was 9, he got ahold of a copy of a C&H book from my brother.  His only comment was, "You're right!  Calvin is me!"  Unfortunately, it is so.  However, I don't think I'd like him so much if he was one of those sycophant goodie-goodie kids.

In a couple of years, when it is safe, I might get the set.  He will be too old to use most of the material at that point.

How Low Can Ya Go Price: The Complete Far Side @ Amazon
« Reply #15 on: April 02, 2008, 04:51 PM »
This is a great deal for any fans out there.  PriceProtectr just notified me the price has dropped for a third time since I ordered less than 2 weeks ago.  Price is now $67.50.  So far, as usual Amazon has refunded me the previous two price drops in a timely manner.
