FileBox eXtender now works under Vista
« on: December 03, 2007, 03:43 AM »
FileBox eXtender  Free software, now also working under Vista. Navigate easily through the Windows folder maze with FileBox eXtender buttons added to your file boxes. Access your favorite and recently visited folders and documents with one mouse click. Adds push-pin button to keep windows on top, and roll-up button to hide window contents except for title bar.
Ver. 2.00.01 is now available.

I liked some of the features and the fact that there are tons of options, but I had some problems with the way file filters were handled, if I add a file filter *.h, it also shows *.html files not just my cpp header files, it does not work the same way say command line wildcarding works.

I had actually written my own solution to the problem before I saw FileBox eXtender:

http://dreamcycle.net/cfdbutton/

It only really does what I need, but I would be interested in hearing what other people would find useful.

Wow.  If I remember right, Hyperionics made Filebox eXtender freeware mainly because they felt they could not support Vista properly.  It's quite a surprise that after making it freeware they continued to work on it to make it so.

Thanks for confirming that, mwb1100 - that's the first thing I thought of when I read that as well.

They just released a native 64-bit Vista version, as well.  The one I mentioned yesterday is 32-bit Vista-compatible.

Filebox extender was already working under Vista (32bit at least) for about 6 months at least, just not as a release version.

edit: yes since april 2007 there was a beta available that didn't give me any issues. Reported this on the forum back then. BTW i can also recommend this program, I can't live without it.

FileBox eXtender - Stopped Working?
Sorry to open this 3 month old thread, but I just have one question about FileBox eXtender:

It has stopped working for me on my desktop computer running XP Pro SP2.  The only change I recently made was to add one program to the Exceptions Pane in Options - I had to add SlingPlayer because the icons that FileBox eXtender places on Windows covered the standard Close and Maximize/Restore icons on SlingPlayer and it wouldn't move them. So I added SlingPlayer to the Exceptions - the first and only program I placed there - and now FileBox eXtender no longer shows on any windows nor download dialogs. Nothing I do in Options gets it working again.

Has anyone else seen this?  There is no longer a support forum at the Hyperionics website - developer says he took it down because of spam. So I can't ask about this there.

Thanks for any advice with this.

FBX isn't just free and working on Vista, now...it's also open source!

You could try their contact page, like the notice on their forum page says.

That is really cool news that it's gone open source.  Now anyone have any ideas for features to add to it?

Not so much adding features, but if someone could fix a bug, I'd be happy enough.
Namely, if you open Recent/Favorites menu using mouse, you can navigate them by arrow keys.
If you use hotkeys, you can't do that -- the menu opens, but the arrow keys do nothing

Unfortunately, I don't have any C++ experience (or any non-GCd language experience, for that matter),
and haven't even managed to build the code, so I'm quite unable to fix it myself :(

I am not asking for new features yet, but for a minor change of what is already there:

I would very much like to either re-order the buttons or make a larger space between Recent and Favorites. I use Fav' a lot more often than I use Recent in these situations, so I would like Fav' to stick out a little to the outmost left.

This is what I have:  1.gif

this is what I want:  2.GIF

:-* It has been fixed in the new version! :eusa_dance: :greenclp: :greenclp:  If someone here did it, I'd like to know so that I can donate a few credits.

Be aware that the file on their secondary server is the "old" 2.00.01, not the new .02

Edited because it now has been removed

This is one of the things I'd miss being 100% on linux.
My guess is that it'd be hard to port, since there are so many graphic libraries, window managers, etc.

I am not asking for new features yet,...

- it is good that I remembered to add "yet". I wrote the author and explained my wish for Filebox eXtender to co-operate with QT Tabbar:

(...) I am also the happy user of QT Tabbar, and it saddens me that Filebox eXtender (FbX) always will open folders in a new window. QT Tabbar makes it possible to open all folders in tabs, and it would be so wonderful if FbX could co-operate with QT, so folders will open in tabs via the FbX also (...)

His answer came today:

(...) I will consider it next time I work in FbX code. Please note that I also release all the source code of FbX on my web site. If you are by any chance a C++ programmer, or know someone who would be interested, I would welcome any improvements to that code!

Many DC members are coders
and many DC members are using Filebox eXtender
and many DC members are using QT Tabbar

- but do we have any coders using both QT Tabbar and Filebox eXtender ??

http://www.hyperionics.com/

2011.02.23 Version 2.01.00
Claudio Nicora, http://coolsoft.altervista.org, fixed the following for Windows 7:
* in Windows Explorer, selecting a preferred folder from FBX dropdown menu causes another instance of Explorer to start (correctly showing the selected folder)
* "Click-switch file box folder" feature does not work
