General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced
« Last post by Deozaan on February 21, 2020, 02:53 AM »
The Windows 10 Start Menu still has a hierarchical layout like it did in Windows 7 and earlier, and AFAIK you're able to organize it however you want.

I can't delete any entries nor can I drag'n'drop to rearrange them - everything just gets lumped under an alphabetical order.

There appears to be no way to 'declutter' the start menu of the rubbish I don't require, (eg. Xbox Game Bar, Your phone, etc).

You can no longer delete and drag'n'drop from the Start Menu to reorganize files, but you can still delete or reorganize from your AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\ and C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\ folders.

Windows Store apps are another story and do indeed just get listed alphabetically, and there seems to be no way to remove them from the Start Menu without uninstalling them. And also as you said, it seems there are some Microsoft apps that are bundled with Windows and cannot be uninstalled, such as Your Phone and the Xbox Game Bar. So there's not much that can be done about those.

But I'm with wraith808. While I do sometimes use the pinned/tiled apps, I rarely use the list of programs in the Start Menu anymore. I just press the Windows key and start typing and press enter. If the Start Menu search doesn't find what I'm looking for, I create a shortcut and give it a name I'll remember to search for and pin that shortcut to the Start Menu. And if I don't know the name of what I'm looking for, then how would I know where to find it in the Start Menu anyway? Unless of course, I've done as you suggested and manually filed it into a "Video" subfolder of the appropriate Start Menu directory as stated above.

I prefer the Hierarchial File System I get with Classic Shell over the flat program menu of Win 10.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. The Windows 10 Start Menu still has a hierarchical layout like it did in Windows 7 and earlier, and AFAIK you're able to organize it however you want. It just also has a "flat" area with "tiles" you can use as shortcuts to your most used apps, which you can also customize and organize however you want.

How come it's so trendy to hate on PHP so much? Is there a succinct explanation on what's wrong with PHP? Seems like a walk in the park next to something like the nightmare working in JavaScript has become.

https://dev.to/jjsan...eople-hate-php--55dn

I followed some of the links down the rabbit hole and it seems everything I find from people saying it is bad is just tautology. Something in the form of "I know PHP is bad because everyone knows PHP is bad."

EDIT: I finally found an article that goes into actual details about the problems with PHP: https://eev.ee/blog/...actal-of-bad-design/

Hello all,

Sorry that this turned into a bit of a rant, but I felt I needed to explain my many years of frustrations with trying to find a reliable mouse for my computer.

I used to be a big fan of an older, wired, Logitech Trackman mouse. It lasted me somewhere between 5-10 years before it was stolen along with my computer. When I looked for a replacement, they didn't offer it anymore, and the closest I could find was the wireless Logitech M570 ($50-$60). It was basically the same design, but wireless, so I figured it was good enough. And I liked it well enough until a couple years later I started having issues which indicate that the microswitch is failing in the mouse button(s).

1. Sometimes a click doesn't register at all.
2. Sometimes a single click registers as a double click.
3. Sometimes a click & drag registers as a single click & release.

When it started happening, it was so rare that I'd think it was just user error. But as time went on the problem grew worse and worse until every few clicks would result in one of the above symptoms happening.

So I bought a new mouse of the same model. Over the course of the next couple of years, the same issue would arise. So I bought a new mouse of the same model and repeated the process again. The primary reason for buying the same model again and again was because I wanted the trackball controlled with my thumb, and it was the only model I could find that was designed like that. I was annoyed that the microswitch kept failing so quickly, but to me the thumb trackball was a must-have feature. But eventually I started feeling pain in my thumb/wrist from my use of the trackball, so I decided to go for a more traditional style of a mouse to give my thumb a rest.

So then I got another Logitech mouse which I think was similar to the Logitech M705 ($50). And within a couple of years I experienced the same issues as previous mice.

By this time I was tired of "throwing away" $50+ every couple of years on new mice when the mice I'd had in the past had lasted me longer than the computers I was using them on. So I decided I'd just go buy a crappy cheapo mouse and if it crapped out on me within 1-2 years then that wouldn't be any worse than the big brand mice I'd been using, and it would save me money along the way.

Somewhere in the middle of all this I started buying replacement microswitches and dipping my toes into the soldering required to replace them in my own mice, but of course the microswitches I bought off of places like aliexpress or Deal Extreme were cheap ones that began failing within about a year and the time and effort of doing the soldering myself made me look for the cheapest (and least time-consuming) way I could get a functional mouse again.

So I started buying the AmazonBasics 3-button wired mouse for $6-$7 and was not disappointed. They're a little small, but they're functional, don't need batteries, and they usually last about a year or so before the clicking issue becomes unbearable. Really the only complaint (aside from the expected short lifespan) is that the small size can lead to some relatively minor hand cramping.

After going through several of those over the course of several years, I decided I'd try my luck with a more expensive mouse that might be a bit higher quality and last a little longer, so I bought the AmazonBasics Gaming Mouse (~$25) advertised as having "gaming-optimized Omron mouse switches—durable up to 50 million clicks." From my perspective, this mouse was 3-4 times as expensive as the $6-$7 mouse, so it should last 3-4 times as long to be cost effective.

Within 9 months the clicking issues were already annoying me so much I wrote a negative review on Amazon about it. Then, just before the 1-year warranty was up, I got a free replacement in the hopes that the first one was just a fluke. Again, about 7-9 months after receiving the replacement, the clicking issues started becoming obnoxious again. It seems crazy to me that this "gaming quality" mouse has a shorter lifespan than the cheapest piece of junk mouse they sell!

So, desperate to find anything worthwhile, and willing to try just about anything, I decided to try the Nulaxy Vertical mouse ($12-$15). I should have known not to trust an unheard of brand like Nulaxy, but I figured if it lasted a year or so then it might be worth it for the extra comfort that would come from the more ergonomic vertical design.

But nope! In the first week of use I already experienced the clicking issues, as well as other problems that make it unacceptable as my regular, every day mouse. I'm returning it.

Where are all the good mice? How come nothing I've bought in the past decade (or longer) has lasted me at least 2 years?

Right now I'm back to the tried and true, cheapo $7 wired AmazonBasics 3-button mouse and pretty much given up hope of finding any decent mouse that will last a good 5-10 years. Is there anything that lasts even 2-5 years anymore? I can get about 18 months of life out of this simple mouse before I feel it needs a replacement. I'm willing to spend more money on a mouse, but I expect it to last me long enough for the cost to be justified. If I buy a $70 mouse it better last me close to 10 years (or maybe only 5 if it's extremely comfortable and/or has convenient features).

I'm starting to get wild ideas of just buying the $6-$7 AmazonBasics 3-button mouse, taking it apart, and putting the internals into a custom made, 3D-printed shell that is more comfortable to hold. Maybe I'll design my own vertical-style mouse shell and finally have a comfortable mouse that will last me a good 1.5 years or more before needing an inexpensive repair/replacement.

And my experience with short keyboard lifespans has been similar, though not quite as drastic. I really loved the Logitech K800, but didn't like paying $100 every 3 years when the keys started failing just after the warranty expired.

Which part of that is the clone brush?
The top two pix, #1 & #2, were all that I could find on youtube; both had unwanted writings, but in different places.

To get the initial pictures, in Windows 10, I grabbed my screen shots by pressing [logos + shift + s] in playback mode to hide youtube progress bar. Then I saved the two images in .jpg format for maximum compatibility.

I see. Thanks for explaining that.

You probably could have saved yourself a bit of work by taking a single screenshot and then searching for the original on TinEye. Here are the results I got from submitting the URL to your first image to TinEye:

You can also disable that.

In fact, you can remove everything on the New Tab page:

Brave New Tab Customization.png

Make sure you also disable "Show Sponsored Images" or that purple bar will show up when there's a sponsored image to tell you that you could be getting paid to see that image by enabling Rewards.

I'm getting annoying Brave browser 'brave rewards' pop-ups. How can I shut that off? I don't care about their 'rewards', I just want the pop-ups to stop.

You did this to yourself.

Brave Rewards are opt-in by default. This means they were off and you went into the settings and enabled them.

Click the triangle to the right of the address bar, click Rewards Settings, and then turn off what you don't want.

I still have the free PSPX installer from this offer, if anyone needs it.  Read the whole thread before deciding if the fuss & bother is worth it, though.

Even when PSPX was new, I preferred the older, non-Corel versions of PSP. I think I'll stick with the Jasc version(s) of PSP.

I see. After asking about it here, I tried downloading the PSP 7 ISO and I also get the error that it is corrupted. Maybe Windows 10 or 7-Zip, whichever is adding the option to mount the disc images, isn't quite as useful as DaemonTools, which 4wd says worked with it perfectly.

I also loaded up my Win 10 VM and tried installing all 4 versions, PSP 7, 8, 9, and X. Trying to mount the PSP 7 ISO from VirtualBox also gave me an error. And it seems the CD I have for PSP X requires the serial key when installing it, and the serial I have is an upgrade key that requires a previous version of PSP to be installed. But I pointed it to my PSP 8 installation and then tried to launch PSP X and it said something about the PSP X being corrupt or illegal and it won't launch. I'm guessing that has to do with the activation servers being dead.

So just for the reference of anyone who may have been interested in my PSPX installer, it seems what I have is pretty much useless since it doesn't appear to work. But it was fun to see PSP 8's interface again after so many years. It's hard to believe how foreign it was to me when I used to be fairly comfortable with it. Definitely more complicated than riding a bike. ;)

I also briefly ran PSP 9, which looked almost exactly the same as PSP 8, but the UI looked a little more modern and sleek. And by modern I don't mean the recent trend of making everything flat again like it was during the Windows 95 era.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. :)

MDF to ISO - worked for me, might depend on what info was included into the MDF to start with.

No need to install it, the installer can be extracted, (use UniExtract), and the executable directly run.

For some reason it took me 3 tries to get UniExtract to extract the executable properly. But it eventually worked. Thanks for the suggestion.

archive.org  has an ISO for it. But I think it might be corrupted.  :(

What makes you think it is corrupted while 4wd says it works?

The reason I ask is because I used MDF to ISO to convert my PSP8 MDF to an ISO and when I try to mount the ISO it says it is corrupt and can't be mounted. So I decided to bite the bullet and burn the MDF to a CD with ImgBurn and then rip that CD back into an ISO, and I can mount that one without issue.

I'm not sure what I'm using to try to mount it with. It's a context menu that shows up when I right-click an ISO file. It's been there so long I just assume it came with Windows 10. But maybe it comes with ImgBurn or some similar software I have installed.

But anyway, if anyone wants or needs the PSP8 or PSPX installation ISOs, I suppose I can provide them now.

I used to really like PaintShop Pro back in the day. But I didn't really like PSPX. These days I mostly use Paint.NET for most of my image manipulations.

I have disc images of PSP 8 and PSP X from when I owned and used it years ago. But I ripped them into MDF format because I was using Alcohol 120% as my disc ripper/burner back in those days.

If anyone would find those disc images useful, I can provide them, though I suspect they won't be of much use to anyone else without valid serial keys to go with them.

As an aside, if anyone can recommend a good/trustworthy MDF -> ISO converter, it would be nice to get some of those older disc images I have into a more ubiquitous format.

There's an option in the side-panel to hide DLCs, but I don't see a way to hide the free demos.
