Saw something about this a few months ago with the head of the EU bitching and moaning that there is no need for it and they the entire EU should be unified on the exact same time "to make trade easier" (Cause no company in the world has any idea how to trade with a country in a different timezone, apparently).

People wonder why the UK voted to leave, and countries like Italy are on the edge...it's for stupidity like this.  They want to do stuff simply for the hell of it, with no actual thought process involved lol.  Clocks going back/forwards is something everybody is fully used to.  It happens twice a year, and for the majority of us...has done for our entire lives...

Living Room / Warning: Do not download "Pip Cam" for Android

Pip Cam for android, on the surface, looks to be a legitimate camera app (filters and all that jazz), but actively takes over your phone system and displays invasive advertisements over every other app you are using...all of the time.

I just spent the last hour trying to work out what was making my mothers phone (Razr) unusable due to an invasion of ads, and within that hour I got shown around 150+ ads that, some of them couldn't be skipped at all (or just closed instantly).

As it transpires, after a bit of digging around to wtf she had installed, I noticed that Android had mentioned on the dtopdown bar that Pip Cam was "drawing" over other apps...not liking the sound of a camera app being able to do that, I uninstalled it...the second I did....the search icon that was glued to the screen was there no longer, and all the ads stopped instantly.

Your request is puzzling me; I didn't even know you can have games in Google Search! How did you get it in the first place? Yes, I can search for "Solitaire" and read that it has been included by Google since 2016. But I have never seen it, and I don't know where or how to get it. Maybe you need to adjust your Google Settings? Or install a simple advert blocker? They come free by the dozens, so I cannot think you would need any one here to write it for you.

Yep...I'm with you on this...had no idea it existed until this thread.  I googled "Play solitaire on Google" and the game came up...that was the only way I could get it to show. 

Honestly...if it's that much of a time sink...the best idea would be to probably just not search for solitaire related search terms (I can't see that being an issue in most peoples daily lives).

I highly doubt any software like this exists.  Dominoes isn't exactly a popular game, except for the over 70's, so your best bet is just to google it.

Failing that...download one of the god knows how many dominoes games from the play store/iOS store/windows store/whatever store you want, and just play until you work out how to do it.

a) it had a 20 Mb footprint; I know people act as if disk space is infinite, but it seemed an awful lot for a launcher, the more so as the first PC I ever used (in 1988) only had a 20 Mb hard disk.  For everything.

The difference between then and now, is that 20MB was a huge amount of data, and hardware was expensive.  20MB these days is literally nothing...I have single images that are bigger than that in file size.

Well, after copying the 'name' from the browser debugger (tried both Firefox and Chrome, latest non-developer releases), my text editors say it's a set of 4 and 5 0x1A characters (26 decimal, ASCII symbol 'Substitute', or ^Z/Ctrl-Z) separated by a space, quite unlikely that's a real name, whatever encoding or character set it might be, must have a deeper meaning, as ^Z used to be EOF (End Of File) for text files, way back when...

The only rendering engine that is actually showing something (and installed on my laptop) is Chromium (Chrome/Vivaldi), neither Firefox, Edge or IE show anything, so that might make Chrome-based browsers a tad more informative.

I would have expected SMF to filter out/reject any non-rendering characters from usernames, but obviously that's not a test-case for them.

I absolutely agree with Tuxman.  It was a public open-source repository before Microsoft bought it.  In other words, prior to their purchase, they already had access to all of the code anytime they pleased.

Adding to this, I explained to him earlier in another thread that Microsoft are one of the biggest Open Source contributors on GitHub and have done more good than bad for the service (by releasing things like VSCode and such).

ahha...mouser didn't delete that thread yet so I can paste what I said here!

I mean - This was a huge story in the programming community when it happened, and has made absolutely no difference to how GitHub has worked since the takeover.  Microsoft have actually been doing some big things in the Open Source community and has produced a huge amount of code and such which is now available for anybody to use. 

In my opinion, M$ taking over GitHub has done no harm, and has actually served quite well.  It has also given them the direct ability to link GitHub to their programming suites (such as Visual Studio) meaning a much easier way to manage ones code.  That and the fact that Microsoft are probably one of the biggest contributors to the Open Source community right now (with offerings such as Visual Studio Code being open source).

A huge company buying things like this don't always have to mean doom and gloom.

I suspect there are not many people like you or I who prefer to just download something, pay once, and forget about it forever, rather than paying a monthly subscription to be able to use it on 86 different types of device and such haha

For the last 8 months or so, I have been studying Italian.  I want to now share with you the tools I have been using!
(Negli ultimi 8 mesi ho studiato italiano. Desidero ora condividere con voi gli strumenti che ho usato!)

For those curious: I am learning it with my partner mainly for fun, but also because we plan to eventually move to Italy (Somewhere around Scalea in Calabria, Southern Italy).  It's a beautiful language with an amazing history and has dragged me so deep into the learning experience that it's pretty much all I do in my free time now!

So...on to the tools, apps, software, etc!

Rosetta Stone (Downloadable Software OR Mobile App)
Now, although this is not free (or cheap for that matter), it is one of the best tools you can find for learning a language (pretty much any language!).  I've been using this almost daily (with a few breaks here and there) and have not regretted the money I have spent on it even once.

You can choose to get the downloadable version (one price, yours forever), or the app version (subscription).  They both have their own merits and which version you want depends entirely on your own learning needs.  The downloadable version (what I use) is one static price and you keep it forever, where the app is a subscription service.  The app has the advantage of having the ability to connect with native speakers and book tutor time with them!

Edit/Update: The only available payment method now is the monthly/yearly subscription.


Learn Italian with Paul Noble (Audio Book [Audible/CD/MP3 + Accompanying PDF])
Now, I've only listened to the first 2 hours of this audiobook so far, but have read the PDF about 5 times!  It's a very VERY useful resource and has actually increased my vocabulary quite a lot and I have been recommending this audiobook to quite a few people!


Duolingo (Online/App)
Now...be warned with this...Although it IS a great free resource for learning very basic phrases/individual words, it also teaches you some things that are not actually correct, and some other things that you question if you're even awake (things like "he takes the tiger from the zoo and gives it the meat"...I mean...that's a super useful sentence right there.....OH...and there is also the super creepy moments where it asks you to translate "why do we die" and then "they are among us" right after each other).  So yeah...use it on the basis it is free, but remember that you get what you pay for...and this is free

Italian Learning and Language Server (Discord):
Super helpful community who will happily help non-natives learn the language (Speak directly to native Italians and other learners via voice or text, completely free!)

So...I just ventured onto the MS Store to download Audible.

I had no choice to do so, seeing as the official download from the Audible website directs you to download something that looks and acts like it was made in 1997, then prompts you to download ANOTHER bit of software in order to access your audiobooks (I mean....Audible is purely for audiobooks...why do I need 2 things to do the 1 thing it should already do?)...when you try to sign-on from the first software, all the buttons open things in INTERNET EXPLORER (like...I could maybe understand it opening EDGE...but IE..wtf?)...oh...and when you download the "Download Manager"...it doesn't even work...the login page uses some sort of embedded browser object which doesn't even work because it can't run scripts so just crashes out.

So yeah....if you want Audible for PC...don't download the software...get the app from the store.
