Site/Forum Features / Re: DC Forum Mods Thread
« Last post by Ath on February 14, 2011, 02:45 PM »
Oh yes, that would make life much more enjoyable when browsing DC on a smartphone. The page numbers are really small when you try to hit them with your finger on the touchscreen
3402
What if the existing donations system was leveraged to work both ways. So that donations between members are split (say 50/50) with the DC. So if say I gave 40Hz a $10 donation, he would actually get $5 and the other $5 would go to DC.

Granted it would have to be time limited and made very (very) clear as to why/what was happening. But it could be an interesting way of greasing all the wheels at one time (so-to-speak).

Great plan SJ, That would be a nice addition to the standard toolset of DonationCoder

This 'split-the-money' option could be a checkbox or percentage-slider (with a loud and clear label describing it's function), so anyone making a donation could split his/her money between the direct beneficiary and DC, where the slider would normally be at 100% user, 0% DC, and for the fund-raiser at 50/50.
3403
It would just be a mug available for purchase at that very high markup, so people who wanted to "donate" by buying it could.  Just another funny way to donate.

Oh, OK, then I'll prolly be aiming at that one :-*
3404
Perhaps for the fundraiser we could have a special mug or tshirt for those lucky and generous enough to be able to afford a large donation, that shows Cody's banker-looking Uncle (never before seen on a DC mug) sitting on top of a huge pile of his gold coins, thumbing through his bank book.

Cody's Uncle:

But you said earlier that the amount of donation doesn't matter... :-[ so this 'reward' should IMHO be a buy-only 'donation'-order?

I do like (to imagine) that image on a mug though

Living Room / Re: DC Front Page
« Last post by Ath on February 13, 2011, 02:01 PM »
I think it's decided: We are going to have a new front page!

Yay!

So, any more thoughts?

I'd vote for a group of top 5/top 10's, as suggested above, displaying newest forum messages, DC software updates, completed Coding Snacks, updated NANY entries, Blog posts, etc.

That's a nice place to be... :-*

So, I take it that you're up for learning Mandarin or Urdu? :D

It's all Greek to me :tellme:

I welcome our new 1-byte-character-set overlords.

Assuming their bytes are sized 16 of our bits, all would be just fine ;)

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Resizing tool

Looked at both tools mentioned (so far), but haven't found how they would launch windows, specified in their sets, if not opened/running yet.

Me

You could have gotten a better shave that mornin'

... but can I still get a badge for giving a buck?

Ah, you want an extra badge :) apparently the NANY badge you currently have isn't enough :o

mouser could introduce a new badge like the current NANY badge: Counting the number of fund-raisers you participated in?
That would require this event to become at least yearly, ofcourse

Hmmmmmmmm, I guess MS is locked into "Internet Explorer" otherwise with the "cloud push" in all the ads I don't know why they don't come out with a browser named "Cloud."  It seems inevitable.

Didn't that happen today? IE 9.0 RC (Release: Cloud)

General Software Discussion / Re: Simple Commandline to send Keystrokes (WinSendKeys)
« Last post by Ath on February 11, 2011, 02:56 PM »
Fired up a VMWare session with Windows XP in it and tested your scenario. That helpctr thingy is just a little slow to initialize ;)
Used -xd 2000 and all was pasted fine. but you might need to tweak that experimentally.

Without further delays: Another update WinSendKeys 3.0.1

Latest release & download moved to separate thread

The readme has this changelog since 3.0:
; 2011-02-11, version 3.0.1
; + Added -xd delay option to wait after running the -x executable_filepath. It already has the delay of -t (100 msec), and this is added when specified. Experiment with the required delay (milliseconds).
;   as additionally requested by kikon in this thread: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=25553
; + This delay can be preset in the optional inifile, (see version 2.5 changelog)
;   Variable:
;   exedelay=0
; ! Updated helpmessage, fixed some readme typos

As usual, I updated the readme, compiled the AutoIt3 source into an exe, and put it all in a zipfile, attached to this post.

General Software Discussion / Re: How long can PC stay in Standby Mode in XP
« Last post by Ath on February 11, 2011, 02:01 PM »
Unfortunately, standby mode has never been 100% stable for me, regardless of hardware or operating systems ...

Standby and Hibernate modes have been stable on my Toshiba and ASUS laptops (both Intel T6400 CPU's) running Windows 7 x64, and an MSI mainboard with Intel E8500 CPU and NVidia graphics running Vista x86. Earlier hardware (desktop systems) and OS versions nearly ever would work (a variety of Intel and AMD CPU's on several types and brands of mainboards, running from Windows 95 to XP).
So it's indeed both a hardware/BIOS and OS related issue. It's mandatory you have the latest WHQL-certified video drivers installed, next to all Windows updates, naturally.

... Got it all set, but... I can't print! ...

Had exactly the same experience! Thought it was because I'm on Win7 x64, so I postponed further testing until they figure it out.
3416
@bob99: 2 possible slightly different causes:
- You could have other software that monitors the PrintScreen key, and sends a 'boop' sound because it detected another hook
- Your BIOS can also hook that key and 'boops' at you when the PrtScr button is pressed
3417
Fine idea!

Could we pull together enough DC coders to do a Coding-Snack-A-Day throughout all of march?

I'd be willing (and hopefully: able 8)) to help out there

General Software Discussion / Re: Simple Commandline to send Keystrokes
« Last post by Ath on February 11, 2011, 06:24 AM »
thank you Ath, but -x doesn't work yet. I used in various way, doesn't work :(
d:\run\WinSendKeys\WinSendKeys.exe -x C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe -c

helpctr.exe just started and nothing is pasted.

Does it react to input directly after starting, or does it need some time to initialize before the paste/send action is accepted? That's currently not accounted for.
And is the focus initially in the correct (input)control? Maybe you'd need a bit of the MouseStroke options to guide the focus into the right place. Details for that are in the readme. (Handling-order is 1) Commandline parameters, 2) -f strokesfile, 3) -c clipboard contents).
3421
Dunno how official it is, but this page ha sat least an understandable opinion,

It's unclear whether Google "will do well to expand its business", but Chrome seems to be a part of a strategic initiative to make Google more visible on the desktop, a mix between Google Toolbar, Google Desktop and Gears that turned into a browser and that needs a critical mass to be taken seriously.

And then there's the official '10 things' philosophy (last revised sept. 2009): http://www.google.co...orate/tenthings.html
But you might want to take these with a few grains of salt...

General Software Discussion / Re: Why is my computer hiccuping every few seconds?
« Last post by Ath on February 10, 2011, 02:16 PM »
But what exactly is it they're storing that actually needs a database? Favorites? Cookies? Browsing history?
Correct, they build a search index as big as all words that where on all pages you viewed. But then they don't know how to find anything back in that pile... sort of. (not true)

Just open a new tab in FF, and start typing (in the 'address' field, not the search field) some words that where in URL's or pages you visited recently with FF. The suggestions are always pretty good, and saved my ass a few times, because I couldn't remember what site some info was on, but FF could!

Living Room / Re: Any suggestion for 3G Phone
« Last post by Ath on February 10, 2011, 02:07 PM »
Usually the SE phones are of quite good quality, but the featureset is not what I require from a smartphone.
Don't expect to be able to comfortably browse any standard website on that (tiny and low-res) screen though. If only being used for tethering, then it could be enough.

If you can get it for a reasonable (= low) price and on a carrier that has good coverage and a cheap data plan in your area, then I'd go for it.

Yet another update, and I've named it WinSendKeys 3.0 :-*

Latest release & download moved to separate thread

The excerpt from the changelog since 2.6, included in the source:
; 2011-02-09, version 3.0
; + Added -x executable_filepath option to start if WindowName is not found or executable filename is not found running
; + Added -xp executable_parameters option to specify parameters to executable_filepath

As usual, I updated the readme, compiled the AutoIt3 source into an exe, and pushed it all together in a zipfile, attached to this post.
