We do strongly try to encourage people on this site to sign up at the forum in order to download free license keys, and I can completely understand that people might be concerned and suspicious about why we want them to sign up.

So of the things I was hoping to do on that page is allay people's fears that we are trying to collect emails for some nefarious spam-related purpose, and make clear why we ask them to sign up.

Personally i think the entire internet is out of control with spam and we should make spamming a serious crime.

So I finally got around to adding a "Privacy Policy" page to the help section on the DonationCoder.com site.

Basically it's meant to say that we will do nothing bad at all with user email and info and reassure people that we aren't trying to build a mailing list to sell or share or spam.

I'd love to have suggestions on how it could be improved, or anything i should mention and don't, or anything that's not clear, or any concerns anyone might have.

I have donated, admittedly not a lot but some,so how come I have 0 donation credits.Hummm..Or am I not understanding that correctly?

when you donated you should have gotten right away an email with both a non-expiring license key and a forum upgrade code/link that you need to visit to upgrade your forum account and put the credits into your account.  email me if you can't find the email after looking in all the usual places (junk mail folders, etc.) ([email protected])

General Software Discussion / Split Browser: Cool Firefox Extension
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2008, 06:42 PM »
The Split Browser Firefox extension (by Shimoda Hiroshi) was actually mentioned by dk70 a while ago in a thread on favorite ff extensions.

It's a very cool extension that lets you tile multiple tabs within the firefox window.

I use tabs heavily, and the Tab Mix Plus extension is my daily companion.  I love tabs.  But occasionally you want to put two things side by side or have a few pages open and visible simultaneously.  That's where Split Browser comes in.  Packed with options it lets you split your window into multiple panels, resize and merge them at will.  Very useful and works very well.

Note: there are a few other extensions that do similar things -- I haven't tried them all and for all i know there may be better ones.. Anyone want to chime in.

UrlSnooper / Re: Network Adapter Detection Fails
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2008, 05:06 PM »
Hi britefire,

  • First, thank you for the detailed clear post.
  • Secondly, turn off automatic network adapter detection -- it's optional and only makes it harder to diagnose things when there is trouble.
  • Thrid, the key problem seemse clear which is that you know what your network card is, and you are saying that it clearly is not in the network adapter list.
I don't know why it wouldnt detect the Linksys LNE100TX -- in fact that card sounds very familiar to me like it might be the one i have.  searching the web seems to show that others with that card are using winpcap based programs without trouble so i don't see why it shoudn't show up.

SO,
i guess i have 3 suggestions to try to figure out what might be wrong:
  • 1) reboot, see if that helps
  • 2) perhaps try uninstalling the winpcap 4.1 beta (then reboot) and installing winpcap 4.0 maybe (http://www.winpcap.o.../install/default.htm) or even older (always rebooting after a new install), and see if that fixes it
  • 3) Try downloading another winpcap-based product and see if that finds your adapter (maybe winpdump - http://www.winpcap.o...indump/default.htm); you might even try this first because if another winpcap program finds your adapter and url snooper doesn't, then its a bug in url snooper which i would have to track down and fix immediately.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Updated plugin: FARR MostRecentlyUsed 0.4.0
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2008, 12:20 PM »
you don't want to end up using a 50 character combo of keywords

this is where FARR's dosearch alias command comes in so handy.

let's say that you commonly want to execute a search in FARR like:
mrua +.cpp +.h +.def -bak -junk EXTRA KEYWORDS

then what you could do is create a new alias with regular expression:
mruq(.*)

and in results put
dosearch mrua +.cpp +.h +.def -bak -junk $$1

now you just type:
mruq
or
mruq EXTRA KEYWORDS

and it will behave as if you typed the whole long thing.

Mobysaurus / Re: Mobysaurus Ever Conflict W/Other Applications?
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2008, 12:17 PM »
I don't think mobysaurus would cause any conflicts but your guess about .net weirdness would be at least a possibility.  maybe people who know better about .net can comment?

One more not very intelligent question: If I uninstall it and then reinstall, will the key work again?
you are a supporting member -- your key will work forever on all of our programs.  the keys are not tied to a specific pc and dont connect to the internet so you have nothing to worry about in that regard.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.107.04 beta - Sep 23, 2012
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2008, 12:14 PM »
there's a checkbox missing "Run Find and Run Robot Now?" at the end of upgrade? It happens on my Vista Business laptop, not on the desktop XP.

because of Vista's security measures, the setup program runs as an Administrator automatically.  i don't offer the user the option of launching the program at the end of the installer because if i do, it runs as administrator instead of normal user account, and causes all kinds of havok.  there may be a better way for me to handle this case but the safest is to just remove that option when installing on vista.

mouser, what is the difference between the new and the old launch method?
technically the differences is that one uses ShellExec and one uses ShellExecEx and attempts to specify the class name for documents.  in PRACTICAL terms, you shouldn't leave the setting alone unless FARR has trouble launching files or documents for you.  I don't really understand why but for some people one method works and not the other.
22640
Just to show you the difference, original page on left, which is what you would get if you just used an alias to show the translation result page, and on the right the result of czb's plugin modifying the page before display:

viet1.png viet2.png
22641
A couple of notes about this latest plugin by czb:

1) It requires the latest version of FARR (2.22.01)
2) It uses a new ability of FARR to download a web page and modify it before displaying it, so its a great example of this new technique if you want to learn how to do that.  czb uses the technique to remove extra stuff like graphic header and footer from the page to make it easier to read.

(note that if you didnt care about modifying the web page before display, you could have implemented this translator just in a normal one line alias without using a plugin).

Hi Rochey,

First of all thank you for posting about how you got it working and asking the question, since it's a good one and not an obvious answer.  So it's useful for others to read about.

To refer to RELATIVE locations, use some of the farr virtual folders listed in the help file like:

Newsletter for July 11th, 2008
Codename "Revenge of the Mini-Review"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"
(new rss feed with images)

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings again dear readers.  Another hot July evening.. It's 1am here in Illinois (we call it Joto hour in the irc chat channel).  1am is actually a pretty busy time on the chat channel as all the night owls are starting to feel like they better stop fooling around and start working.

The DC server admin (Gothi[C]) has been hunting down an email problem with the new member server and he thinks he's finally got it solved.  We shall see.  Thanks in part to a very generous donation we've been able to do a big upgrade of the secondary member server where we provide web space to dc users.  The new server will allow us to be more generous giving out space and hosting bigger member projects.  Actually we have a fun new idea planned for the member server in the next month or so, so stay tuned..

It's been nice for me to get back to coding on DC Software, and I've been adding a lot of new features to my Find and Run Robot program, mainly working with plugin writers to implement stuff they can build off of.  Actually in the last week a new visitor to the site has implemented a plugin that has long been sought after, one that can display Most-recently-used file lists stored by windows when you use other programs.  FARR seems to be getting some attention lately but it's never really been on the level of some of my other programs.  Doesn't really matter to be, but after I'm done with this round of FARR updates I'll switch over to my other programs like Screenshot Captor and Process Tamer, and do some updates on those.  If you have any feature requests, now would be a good time to post them.  I also have to figure out what new big DC programming project I want to start on next.

Keeping up a trends from last month, we've got lots of little mini-reviews and editorials from dc members this month.  I'm not sure what's causing this increase but it's very welcome -- everyone loves reading a good review.

Oh and don't forget, if you're planning to submit something for the the programming contest that we are currently running, you better wrap things up.  It ends on July 14th.  The winner will receive a giant MS Visual Studio bundle prize (includes all Windows OS's and office tools, worth over $10,000).

Lastly, I should say something about the fact that we haven't had any new software discounts lately.  After skipping 2007, we are definitely going to have a fundraiser in 2008 to try to raise money for the website and our ever increasing web server costs.  And we will need your help.  One of the things we will try to do as usual is have  bunch of software discounts and giveaways.  But I would appreciate any other ideas you might have on things we might do during the fundraiser celebration -- either post ideas on the forum or email me ([email protected]).  We like to do strange things so no crazy idea will be rejected without consideration.  And if you enjoy these newsletters and want us to keep doing them, and you've never posted before on the DC forum, don't be shy about posting a reply on the newsletter thread and saying so.

2. Your Participation Requested

A warm welcome to all the new members who have joined over the last month.  Here are some good topics on which to make your debut post.  Don't be shy, just jump right in, we are always happy to hear from new people.  And for our long term members, you know what to do -- join in and make your voice heard.

3. Mini-Reviews and Editorials by DC Members

It was a big month for mini-reviews on the forum.  Mini-reviews are a great resource for people researching software solutions and may be found on the dedicated Mini-Review Board.  Please remember to acknowledge the efforts of the reviewers with a few donationcredits if you find their reviews interesting and/or helpful.

4. DC and DC Member Software

Some more new cool plugins for Find and Run Robot (FARR), coming hot on the heals of lots of new FARR features, plus a new autohotkey project by a new member of the forum.

5. Living Room

The Living Room section of the forum is where we discuss general issues that don't really belong in the other, dedicated sections.  It's kind of a catch-all section -- lots of website discoveries and recommendations, etc. This makes it a great place to explore - you never know what you're going to find!

6. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into to sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

7. Developer's Corner

It's good to see activity in this section of the forum increasing a little recently.  Remember that this section isn't just for computer programmers, it's for entrepreneurs of all kinds to discuss the issues involving creating things and running a small business.

8. Company Complaints and Compliments

This relatively new section of the forum is a place where people can post their honest personal experiences with companies -- positive or negative.

9. Fun, Games, and Humour

One of the things that makes the forum a nice place to hang out is that there is a good balance between serious expert discussion and just plain silly fun (and everything in between).  There are always a few truly sublime discoveries posted by DC members each month, and this month was no exception.  There is also a special section on the forum called the DC Gamer's Club, where people talk about multiplayer games and set up servers to play against each other.  It's also where I yell and scream and tell people to code their own new games instead of playing other store bought games.

22647
This is an interesting website the looks like it's trying to serve a similar role as McAfee SiteAdvisor, but using a very different mechanism.  The main idea is to collect real user opinions about the safety ratings of different sites to determine security and display this information while you surf.  There are IE and Firefox addons.

Anyone try this and want to offer any opinion about it?  The video tutorial looks like it might be a little too pre-emptive for my tastes (i.e. it looks like it's popping up alerts and stuff rather than a showing subtle indications) but there may be options to change that and i'm curious to hear what other people think.

It's free (though it seems clear there is some kind of money making plan or buyout plan in here eventually..)  Certainly looks work a try.

What is WOT?
WOT, short for "Web of Trust," is a community whose members exchange knowledge of websites: Can they be trusted? Are they safe to use? Do they deliver what they promise? If a site has a bad reputation, WOT will warn you - and save you a lot of trouble. By joining the WOT community you can protect yourself and help others. Our mission is to make the Internet safer by giving our users a way to share their experience of websites and the services they offer. WOT is a powerful tool - and it's free! We have information on more than 19 million sites. Join us today and make the Internet safer for us all.

Who is behind WOT?
Aside from the community, there is a hard-working team behind the WOT service. Headed by serial entrepreneur Esa Suurio, Against Intuition Inc. focuses on developing and providing software and services for the WOT community and promotes the community's goals of Internet security for everyone.

Against Intuition was founded in 2006 by two visionary graduate students, Timo Ala-Kleemola and Sami Tolvanen, who now are developing the system further with the aid of a group of talented software developers, designers and database administrators.
