This software seems like it's been abandoned. Was never able to register it and it's not really possible to use it if you don't get the "certificate". Too bad...

Anything similar exists?

Thanks Curt... Yes, not easy to find good (and cheap) project management solutions for Outlook! :tellme:

I found another pretty expensive solution for those using MindManager : Gyronix ResultsManager. Added to my list (first post)

Still willing to hear about others' experiences... :)

So... Nobody wants to share experiences about project management with Outlook -- trics, add-ons, plug-ins experiments, home-brewed systems... (Or even enrich the "Outlook project management add-ons" list started in my first post)?  :)

Transcends ?

Thanks for the extra links... And the joke (could use its opposite as a compliment too : you're so beautiful, Photoshop couldn't ruin you??? no, not as good). I'll try it in my family and report.  :)
I wonder if you can achieve similar results with the gimp...

PS : of course, even more than Photoshop CS2 and the like, was the concept of reversing the process that I found quite clever... And the slogans...

Living Room / Re: Do you archive/store your downloads (mainly install files)?
« Last post by Armando on October 08, 2007, 08:54 PM »
Like everything else on my computer, I backup all my downloaded applications, drivers, etc. on 3 different external hard drives (one in my bag, one on my desk, on at my parents' home...).  :-[

All software are put in an "Sofware" folder.

Inside this folder, each application has its own folder (use FileNanny for this - a little shell extension that can be found here), and a note describing what it's all about (use Filenote for this - another little shell extension http://www.moonsoftware.com/freeware.asp)... I don't classify apps in different folder categories, but I tag them (more efficient, I find).

I usually get rid of older versions, unless I have good reasons not to do so...

I try to keep a registry of all uninstalled applications where I write the reasons why I've uninstalled them. I also TRY to keep a record of installed applications, and why I've chosen them instead of others...  :)

Yes, downloading again IS faster than it used to be, nowadays, but having everything at hand is much better and much much quicker. It feels safer also…

laughinglizard :

Open Workbench and  GanttPV are quite nice, of course, but, unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think that any of them interacts with Outlook’ tasks lists or calendar in any obvious way. Same thing for Zoho, actually. Seems very nice, but I don’t see any easy way to have it interact with Outlook…

Interaction/integration with Outlook is fundamental for me (all the add-ons and applications I've mentioned integrate in some ways with Outlook). This is where I manage my tasks and calendar events.

General Software Discussion / Managing projects with OUTLOOK
« Last post by Armando on October 08, 2007, 12:33 AM »
I was kind of satisfied with my home brewed project management system in Outlook until… now.

Question :

Do you know any affordable or free add-on/application to help managing projects in conjunction with Outlook’s “tasks” feature?

Here are some of the options I’ve found, googling around (maybe some will find it useful):

TrackerOffice :  Just mentioning it, even if not really an option : expensive and… “Minimum licensing begins at 50 named users, with a beginning price of $15,000 for a single module.”  Ouch.

- EasyProjectPlan (Excel Project Plan) :  Price:   $ 219.36 (CAD); pretty expensive if you ask me… [edit : 2007 10 25 -- 13 10 : Only expensive for a single user, not teams, since : " Each license includes UNLIMITED DISTRIBUTION to project team members" -- it should be noted though that "Each person accessing the EasyProjectPlan© Admin Screen must purchase a license".]  But seems to ingrate nicely with Outlook, lots of features… Excell oriented. A bit overkill for my needs, most probably.

    EasyProjectPlan features include:

- Track project tasks, action items, issues, bugs, defects, risks, change requests.
- Import over 30 MSProject task fields – custom select from over 700 MSProject fields.
- Create and Print Gantt Charts directly from Excel – MSProject NOT required.
- Synchronize EasyProjectPlan© tasks with Microsoft Project.
- Synchronize EasyProjectPlan© tasks with Outlook Tasks/Calendar/Email.
- Automatically assign and send Outlook tasks and calendar appointments.
- Merge EasyProjectPlan© data with MSProject and maintain Dependency/Predecessor/Successor links.
- Merge multiple EasyProjectPlan© files into a single master file.
- I-mport MSProject tasks with UNLIMITED number of levels into EasyProjectPlan©.
- Schedule tasks Finish-To-Start.
- TIME support for Start and Finish dates.
- Supports Import/Export for any 3rd party product including Project Viewers.
- Group tasks by project plan hierarchy - collapse and expand task groups.
- Email task information directly from the spreadsheet.
- UK date formatting (dd/mm/yy) is automatically detected and set on open.
- EasyProjectPlan©  file is only 2MB (the entire project plan can be emailed as a single 2MB file attachment).
- Track changes on the spreadsheet.
- Advanced version control features.

- EasyTaskSync : same company as EasyProjectPlan. Same price tag. Syncs MS project with Outlook — handy if you’ve got MS project (expensive), I guess…

EasyTaskSync features include:

- Synchronize Microsoft Project tasks with Outlook Tasks.
- Automatically assign and send Outlook tasks.
- Add tasks to team member calendars using Outlook Calendar.
- Email task information directly from Microsoft Project.
- Automated Status Column.
- Post-Sync Reports.
- Re-Link broken task links.
- Outlook tasks are automatically categorized by project plan hierarchy.
- Easy to use Admin Screen with password protection.
- EasyTaskSync© is compatible with EasyProjectPlan©

- Gantt for Outlook
seems to ingrate nicely with Outlook. Aesthetically pleasing??... Seems also a bit expensive for what it is : $121.

Feature list :

•   Category color support (Outlook 2007)

•   FREE technical support

- Outlook GTD add-in : well, the name says it all… $69.95.  Not many project oriented features.

Allows 2 levels of tasks, if I remember well?

4Team for Microsoft Outlook : at $49.95, it’s a deal, compared to other solutions… A bit too basic, maybe, as it doesn’t seem to allow nested sub-tasks (hierarchies of tasks). BUT, seems to integrate perfectly well with Outlook and does provide some kind of gantt chart functionality. Not sure if that solution is future proof… would have to try it.

(Sent the email 7 days ago) [edit : just got an answer today 2007 10 10. Project is alive and, according to Ishan at OutlookSync-PSTSync, the first release should happen in about a week]

The software seems to be ready.

- PLANTRAC-OUTLOOK : haven’t tried it  and have no idea how much $ it is. Also seems a bit overkill and… a tad old fashioned? [edit 2007 10 08 — 21:20 : yes, as Curt mentioned : known to work with windows 3.1 up to...2000. No mention of XP or Vista]
The feature list for this one is a bit long to post…

- TaskWorks Outlook 2007 Add-in [Edit : added on 2007 10 08]  Web based, with a subscription fee.
(I don’t want to pay a monthly fee for a project management software… So I'm not too interested... But anyway, here it is for those who could find it useful...)

- ResultsManager 2 [edit: added 2007 10 10 — 03:13] Might be a good solution for those who already own MindManager… Pretty expensive solution. Many interesting features though.

- Zoot [edit: added 2008 01 06] I just realized I forgot to include zoot in here. Zoot can be synced with Outlook and can be used to manage projects. like I said  here I didn't find it ideal to work with Outlook. Some of the reasons were :
    - Recurrence didn't seem to synchronize well,
    - Syncing seemed prone to errors (don't know why...)
    - "Sub-tasking" is not made much easier and does not transfer to outlook in a way that makes it easy to sync with a palm device (for example).
etc.

(2008 02 11 : decided to add these two as they can work (synced) with Outlook :
)
- My Life Organized (lots of stuff about that one on DC)

- Achieve Planner (there are a few threads mentioning it : https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9698.0, https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9417.0, https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=12247.0)

Iphigenie proposed these two (2008 02 11)

- Jello Dashboard
An open source single person GTD add on. Quite a few people around here are into GTD

- Taskline
I like the idea of this one, it does the "juggle tasks and fit into calendar" that Above & Beyond does, but within Outlook

Anyway…

Anybody tried one/some of these?

Any other affordable options  I've omitted? (Has to interact with Outlook) [edit : added this reminder on 2007 10 08 -- 21:13]

Incidentally, I still have a PIIIE notebook running Win2k Sp-4 and it's still more than capable - runs Office 2003 just as quickly as the centrino does on half the RAM (512MB 100Mhz).

Yup. Let's all go back to win2k!  ;) (that's 7 years ago... a long time in computer time... Amazing.)

Josh : apart from the 3 aspects F0dder mentioned earlier (DX10, Hybrid flash/harddrives, and Vista only apps) what would be, in your opinion, the benefits of switching to Vista now ?

I just installed BRU - very nice. Lots of easy options there.

Love it too. I just renamed a bunch of files today, using BRU and Flash Renamer, and realized that I love the fact that BRU's live preview shows the changes in a different color. Very convenient, easier on the eyes and brain... You can also apply several changes at once, very convenient too.

But Flash Renamer (my other favorite) has some definite pluses : a "path/address bar", which is more convenient (IMHO) than the "jump to path" action in BRU; a "free select" (drag and drop) window to drop files (very convenient if you want to rename files from different folders simultaneously); a preset manager to save presets (you can save presets in BRU too, but it's not as intuitive); and other little sweet features (like MP3 renaming based on file content, file attribute changer, add different file attributes to the name, append multiple different file characteristics to the name, etc.)

Both are very complementary.

I thought about trying the beta but isn't the beta only the freeware version? I have the pro version so I can sycn with my USB drive. I don't want to get into a situation where I'm actually losing features by trying the beta.

"Technically" (as Leo from the EverNote forum said), the beta is actually more like the paid version... But for free (trial). For non-paying customer, the beta version will probably expire after a while.

Of course, betas are always a bit more risky (although I've not experienced any thing bad with Evernote). You can't install 2.1 and 2.2 side by side. You should test it first (Image your drive, backup you database...) if your database is important to you.

How do they handle upgrades once it gets out of beta? I bought through Handango. Do they send everyone a new download link? (I guess I should be asking this over on their forums  :-[)

When you'll select help—>check for update, normally it will download the latest version. If you paid (and then probably have something written in your windows registry), it should update to the EverNote Plus 2.2 version. If not, just complain at their forum (I will if something like that happens)... They're pretty receptive (not like the gemX folks... ;))

Farr is very stable. In this specific case, TO ME alpha is a synonym for  "not yet officially released". Maybe mouser should consider using the word "beta" (yes, it does exist, mouser)??? or even release candidate???

Holy Carp, Armando! I've always steered clear of the GTD Add-On for Outlook because I thought the $70 price tag was excessive. But compared to the GANTT add-in, GTD is almost a bargain!

 ;D
That's why I've decided to create my own system.
The gantt add-in looks good though... On the picture (haven't tried it...)
2144
I haven't dared to try Outlook 2007. I've heard some frightening stuff about its performance… and since performance is somewhat important to me, I,ve decided to stick to Outlook 2003.

Anyhow…

I've tried to use many other organizers/PIM/Todo managers (trialed them or used them for a while : DoOrganizer, Essential PIM, Achieve Planner, Chandler, Anytime Organizer, Info Select, Sunbird, Thunderbird, TimeTo, SQLNotes — IMO very promising —, Todolist, My Life Organized, Calendarscope, Vitalist, Remember The Milk, etc.) but I always come back to Outlook. Some of the reasons are : Palm syncing is mostly flawless, it’s pretty customizable (forms, columns, fonts, colors, etc.), it interacts well with many other application (even with farr!), it’s searchable with X1, Archivarius, and a bunch of other desktop search programs, etc.

So, I generally do like Outlook 2003 and find it pretty reliable. Except (mostly, but not exclusively) for :

1-   The absence of any small integrated project management tool (I know that there is Microsoft Project ; but 1- MP is not even completely compatible with Outlook — the different tasks fields don't transfer and synchronize properly… and, anyway, 2- I'm not asking for something as complex as Microsoft Project to take care of all my small projects…);

2-   (in relation to my first point) Outlook’s  tasklists inability to support “sub-tasks”  — what a nightmare : you can’t subdivide  bigger tasks into smaller steps,  unless you devise your own system (I did : not exactly optimal, but it's okay) or use a plug-in (apart from the GTD add-on and Gantt for Outlook, anybody here has a suggestion?);

3-   Outlook’s very basic (almost absent) prioritization system (it’s possible to circumvent that too, though, with a bit of imagination : Outlook forms are very flexible : you can rename any fields you want and fill them with your own parameters, etc.). A nice algorithm to calculate task priorities would also be cool also… (is there a plug-in for that?)

4-   Outlook’s so so management of recurrences and rescheduling (I hate it when it duplicates tasks after changing the recurrence);

5-          Outlook's lack of a vision or clear "organizational philosophy"... (this is actually a bit of a strength at the same time : it might make Outlook more flexible)

And some others, of course. But these are the main ones I can think off, quickly… actually, these reasons alone probably drive me crazy enough to make me want to switch to another application every month or so! Many other applications will solve my tasklists/project management problems, but, unfortunately, will often add other problems that are usually even worse (IMVHO, of course);

If one is using a GTD approach or any other more sophisticated organizational system (project oriented, maybe) with Outlook, one has to figure out a way to implement it... almost from scratch. It took me a lot of time to have Outlook behave the way I want, synchronize with my Palm effectively, etc.  — and I'm still not completely satisfied.

Achieve Planner could be an interesting Outlook replacement for those who are into GTD and/or Covey’s philosophy (I'm keeping an eye on it). But the last version doesn't do e-mail (that, I could deal with, I guess, and use a dedicated email program), doesn't synchronize directly with the Palm, is not searchable through X1 or Archivarius, doesn't have a very powerful and flexible search tool, etc. etc. And these are all aspects that have become really important to me.

Sorry for that long post... I guess I'm procrastinating.

Great!

Can you do it Armando?

Actually, it was more meant as a joke... But surely could be done if 3-4 people teamed up. Unfortunately I'm a bit short of time right now. Maybe in a few months.

A wiki would be handy for these types of reviews. (It has been suggested in the past... I think the idea was  abandoned for some reasons...)

* FARR
* Quicklaunch (from truelaunchbar, not that different though)

though i find that FARR gets slower the more directories you add to it.
For example i have all my portable/standalone/no-install programs in C:\Programs, and when i try to find something in it, it takes too long.
Another issue is i don't know when it's done searching.

You could use the Locate32 Plug-in for farr -- no more waiting since everything is indexed, if you wish. For most of the C drive, I use locate.

How about ReactOS? It started off fresh, is based on the principles of nix and is binary compatible with windows :)

It's going to take a looooonnnng while... to even be somewhat compatible with... Windows 2000/XP... let alone Vista.
