General Software Discussion / My wishlist for desktop organizer
« on: May 09, 2009, 05:54 AM »
Hi

I have an idea of organizing my desktop, which is cluttered with too many icons. Many people desktop are like that too. So my idea of a perfect tool to organize, is to put them organize into folders on the desktop but when I mouse over them, it will open the folder automatically and show the remaining icons.

It's like having the Start Menu at the corner, only multiple of them in the desktop. Anyone know of such a tool in existance?

Flash Peak is better in productivity, but more buggy and stooped development.

I found a freeware with source code

General Software Discussion / Folder and CDR Compare
« on: March 12, 2009, 11:47 AM »
Hi

I want to ask if anyone has recommendation for a freeware folder compare tool. I used to use TestPath, it's great for testing CDR if they are written correctly, and it works great with folders compare too (over 500 GB). Unfortunately it does not support unicode files.

Thanks. Raidcore looks like it needs a hardware adaptor. MirrorFolder looks like the one.

General Software Discussion / 3rd party software raid 1 in Winxp
« on: December 22, 2008, 04:19 AM »
Hi

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendation for a 3rd party software to do raid 1 mirroring (non system drive) in winxp? I'm familiar with the other options (winxp mirroring hack, on board raid, hardware raid, add on pci card, raid 5, linux etc) but I'm just looking for a software solution which can reliability do mirror in winxp. Any ideas?

That software is long abandoned. Pity, it works very well except for these few bugs. I found something replacement but the dictionary is not as good yet.

I been looking at an older version, it does look good but a little too complex. I will take a look at the new one when I can find the time

Living Room / Re: which hierarchical note program?
« on: May 01, 2008, 01:31 AM »
I was previously using Neomem, and looking for a new note taker to switch to. I've evaluated quite a lot mentioned here, but they didn't cut it. I just checked out Maple (I noticed it was mentioned), and it is FANTASTIC.

It has everything Neomem has, in addition, very good features

- Drag and drop images
- Backups to 1 file, meaning external data are stored internally
- Can export to html tree, chm and other formats
- Can export a branch to another file.

Are we able to get a discount on it? My friend and me are planning to buy a license :)

See if these articles offer a fix:

Thanks PhilB66, this works!

Thanks for the offered solutions but I think I didn't explain myself clearly. What I wanted was to be able to click the pdf, and it asks to save the pdf in a dialog, not open in acrobat. The solutions offered were to disable browser integration, and open in acrobat instead, which is done. Previously it was done by setting the pdf extension to "Confirm open after download" with the browser integration disabled, but that does not work anymore

General Software Discussion / Disabling Acrobat 8 IE integration
« on: March 24, 2008, 10:27 PM »
Hi

Does anyone knows of a way to disable acrobat IE intergration, so when I click on a pdf file, it will ask to save instead of opening automatically? In previous version, there is a nppdf32.dll file to delete, but for version 8, it does not work anymore.

Darn, I hate Acrobat, but the other viewers not ready to replace it.

This has to be one of the worse licensing I ever saw. I bought this software, the silver registration, and now I cannot transfer it to the new computer I bought cos my old machine is retired.

http://www.screen-ca...apture/SpiderReg.asp

With silver registration you will get:
- Unlimited email support during the first month after the purchase
- No transfer of the program to new computers; - free upgrades are possible but not guaranteed;
no support or help with registration will be provided beyond 1 month after the purchase.

Price: 9.95 $US

With gold registration you will get:
- Unlimited email support during the first 3 years after the purchase;
- 3 year unlimited transfer of the program to new computers (if you buy a new computer you can move 5 Clicks from the old one); - 3 year free upgrades to the newest versions of 5 Clicks.

Price: 19.95 $US

Here I found one alternative freeware which does almost the same, except requiring one extra click. Darn, I will never buy from such company with absurb license.

You save the filters and can run them all in a batch. I use it to remove pesky javascripts before compiling to chm

General Software Discussion / Re: Diagnostic for portable harddisk
« on: October 05, 2007, 01:09 PM »
that's what I'm trying to avoid doing :) SMART may not be too useful cos the values may not be accurate, but things like Western Digital Lifeguard are fairly accurate if the drive fails the check, time for RMA.

General Software Discussion / Diagnostic for portable harddisk
« on: October 04, 2007, 10:28 PM »
Hi

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good way to diagnose whether a portable harddrive via USB is failing soon or not. Something like the harddisk manufacturers tool (eg. Western Digital LifeGuard tool) to detect the disk status. Most of them I found can't read USB portable harddisk, the closest one is HD Tune.

46
I will buy even if there's a commercial version which works just as well.

General Software Discussion / Re: how do you write a .chm file?

This is the best. You create a folder of html files, then it can compiile to chm.

Hi

I've been looking all around for a way to encrypt data in portable thumbdrives that does not require admin access. Unfortunately most of them require admin or just simpley encrypt file by file. I found this Portable Vault which at least behaves like a folder.

http://www.migosoftw.../portable-vault.html

Mouser, perhaps we can try get a mass discount?

Funny, I have just been evaluting for work too. Hansoft.se is the only solution I found which looks good but it's darn expensive. The better ones are always hosted, I'm looking for intranet solution.

If you have ripped them using AnyDVD or DVDDecryptor, use AutoGK to encode them to 700MB Divx or Xvid.
