This just came up in my Google Alerts so I thought I would update it.  Distance Check went through a major upgrade so check it out.

Agree Chris. But i don't understand why people in most SEO blogs and Forums ask us to stay away from bad neighborhood and link farms. :tellme:

Its the direction of the link that is key.  You have to avoid bad neighborhoods with outbound links, which are fully within your control.  When linking to someone think of it as casting a vote for the site with the anchor text assisting in what the vote is for.  By linking to a bad neighborhood, you are in essence, saying I approve of this website and want some of the trust and link juice from my page to be shifted to them.  This is why linking to them can hurt you.

228
Having backlinks to your site can't hurt your Google ranking.  Google is smart enough to understand that you can't control who links to your therefore they won't penalize you.  Imagine if this was the case.  I could sink my competitor just by submitting them to certain directories or websites.  Not gonna happen.  Backlinks are a 0 or greater factor.  They can either effect your site positively or nothing.  It won't swing into a negative region.

229
Yes. It may be the sign of a bigger issue.  If there is an issue it should be resolved before long term damage is done.

230
Nope.  Google has more than one website to look at and catching things takes time.  This is why black-hat SEO works.  It produces results until Google catches on and bans or penalizes a website.

Also, the SEO plugin takes care of some things but don't fall into a false sense of security that its handling enough.

231
Just because you have a plugin doesn't mean its controlling everything.  SEO is a broad term and encompasses every aspect of a website and why it ranks where it ranks.

232
Hmm.  Seems that the toolbar pagerank was stuck from another site I had visited.

Look at the code of your website's homepage.  Look at the very large block of JS text for creating some sort of tree or something.  That looks bad from an SEO standpoint and might be considered stuffing hidden text.  Google crawler does look into JS code.

233
When I went your site I see you have a 6 weight.  Where is it zero?

234
First, signup and use Googles Webmaster tools.  This is the way the Google will communicate to you if there is an issue with the website.

Why it would go to 0 most likely has nothing to do with inbound links as it really only takes one to get a pagerank of at least 1.

Reason why a zero:
- Your site was hacked and is filled with hidden spam text.  A common hack is to not change the look of the site and only include links in comments and hidden text - hard to spot unless you think you've been hacked and check the code.  Google Webmaster tools will tell you when this occurs
- You are doing some black-hat SEO techniques and have been caught.  If this this is the case then you need to remove all the techniques and beg Google to forgive you
- You are linking to many, many bad neighborhoods.  Since you control outbound links, Google will penalize for linking to bad websites.
- The page you are looking at, with a zero, recently changed its page name and therefore has no pagerank stored.  PageRank is tied to a page and not a domain.  This means that if a new page is added to your site it start at zero and usually gains its first Pagerank from your internal linking strategies.
- You actually have a pagerank but when you viewed it, it was querying a data center that was not responding.

I think the cake is pretty cool the way it is.

Developer's Corner / Re: Coding web pages for different browsers.
« on: January 21, 2009, 08:48 AM »
I design for FF and then apply hacks as needed for IE6, IE7 and Opera.  I also use a CSS structure that allows me to easily apply and remove hacks as needed (when IE6 drops off I can remove the hack easily from a website).

This is the CSS structure I use:
debugging.css  - Special overrides for debugging that shows me how elements flow
default.css - contains all my default styles applied to a website.  This will contain sections for each page
hack-ie6.css - contains hacks for ie6 to isolate styles just to that browser
hack-ie7.css - same as above except for ie7
hack-opera.css - same as above except for opera
layout.css - contains the styles that drive the layout (the base template, no content) such as Header, Menu, Footer, Content Area, Side-bars
reset.css - A special CSS style sheet that resets everything.  Gives my styles the best chance at being cross browser compliant from the start
style.css - The one style sheet to rule them all.  Contains only imports of above and is the only stylesheet being called from a page.

Feeds:
One thing I find annoying is the RSS Feed from SMF and how active threads totally consume the feed.  What would be nice is a topic only appears once in the feed list, positioning itself based on the last response timestamp.  This would you to see the last 10 active threads instead of the last 10 posts.

239
Well I am using the free version. I would upgrade but I am not sure if I would get

-Integrated calendar. Not just simple calendar thou I need to see when things are sent, upcoming invoices etc
-Better Invoice tracker.
-Import and export for time tracking, invoices, expenses

and couple other things that I have mentioned

Does Quickbooks offer a demo because you should check out the full version.

240
Quickbooks does what you are asking for, doesn't it?   I use Quickbooks for invoices, projects, expenses, time tracking.  What version do you have.

241
Congrats and well deserved...

Developer's Corner / Re: PHP function sorting/reorder utility?
« on: December 05, 2008, 09:44 AM »
1) I like things organized and want like functions together

2) I do all my PHP coding in a text editor (emEditor) so I do a lot of scrolling around looking for functions.

I have tried many, many time to get away from a text editor and I just can't.  I am very comfortable in a text editor for writing code - still do all my HTML, CSS and PHP in a text editor.

I looked at many IDE's but counldn't find one that had this kind of functionality.   I'm surprised there is anything out there.

Developer's Corner / PHP function sorting/reorder utility?
« on: December 01, 2008, 11:18 AM »
When writing classes for PHP I find that it would be nice to re-order the functions.  I would like a tool that displays the functions in a class and allows me to move it up or down in the order.  Then the tool would apply the re-order.  Kinda of like the screenshot below.  Anyone know of such a tool?

I like to have like functions grouped together but during development sometimes things get moved around.

There are some things I need to get working better.  If you watch the status bar you will see how fast it searches (in memory) but how slow it is at generating the report display (especially the detailed report).  Writing to any kind of display memory is slow and I need to virtualize the display where its only loading into the display memory what is actually being shown to the user and not the full report.

Also, the right click on the detailed report will only work properly if the files are in the same folder.  There is no mechanism to use the Explorer right click menu when files span different folders - at least that I know of.

Oh and the Help file is not that good - I hate writing help files...

247
Been working on it for a couple years now.  Its what I use to manage websites as its dead simple for me to locate text within a large website project.

Whats kinda neat about Seeker is the four reporting methods and the native search for Word documents and Excel spreadsheets (will tell you what sheet within a workbook a text string was located).

248
My Seeker application has command line support.

249
Nice.  Regular Expression are on my hate-to-do list when it comes to development.

Theme:  Savings
Create an application that saves time, effort or money.  I think 'Savings' is a greate theme considering the state of the economy.

(not sure if I can participate since I have a project I want to release and not sure if I can make the deadline)
