General Software Discussion / Re: PIM's
« on: May 25, 2007, 12:17 PM »
Has anyone considered Ultra Recall http://www.ultrarecall.com/ ?

It has a pretty active forum with is a good sign.
http://www.kinook.co...hp?s=&forumid=22

It has recently been released as Version 3 and in active development.

And it looks quite impressive and also very customizable - reminds me of Dopus customizability - so it probably can morph into almost any kind of PIM you will like it to me.

And it comes with a set of sample templates, synchronization with Outlook so you can use as a conduit to sync with your PocketPC for example.

You can add all kinds of attributes, forms, capture webpages and search as-you-type (which is probably why it is called Ultra Recall)

And it can import from a whole range of file formats :

Ultra Recall allows you to easily capture information from a variety of applications, using the Internet Explorer or Outlook toolbars, by dragging and dropping, copying and pasting, importing files, or manually entering formatted text. It can handle both local files and online documents, automatically storing and indexing the content of most popular file formats, including:

    * ActionOutline
    * AskSam
    * Firefox/Netscape/Mozilla browsers (bookmarks, web pages, selected parts of web pages)
    * InfoSelect
    * Internet Explorer (favorites, web pages, selected parts of web pages)
    * KeyNote
    * ListPro
    * Microsoft OneNote (MHT)
    * Microsoft Outlook messages, appointments, contacts, and notes
    * Microsoft Outlook Express messages
    * Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
    * Microsoft PowerPoint presentations
    * Microsoft Word documents
    * MindManager
    * MyInfo
    * OPML/OML
    * Onfolio
    * Other browsers (web pages)
    * Other email programs (PocoMail, The Bat!, etc. via .eml files)
    * PDF (Adobe Acrobat) documents
    * Pictures and images
    * Text and rich text (RTF) files and clipboard data
    * Thunderbird/Netscape email
    * TreePad
    * Web pages (including MHT)
    * Windows Explorer files and folders
    * XML files
    * ZIP files
    * Zoot

Ultra Recall includes an integrated web browser, rich text editor, image viewer, email message viewer, and contact editor, and it provides the ability to easily open captured web pages and documents in their associated application or default browser."
http://www.kinook.co...Recall/products.html

And it allows file exports too so your data is not trapped in there.

But it's not that cheap at US$99.

So like Dopus, if you are looking for power and customizability, this may be it for you.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9
« on: May 25, 2007, 10:03 AM »
The donationcoder discount cannot be applied to the price of an upgrade, as far as I or anyone else in this thread could tell. There was some talk of an approach to GPSoft about the possibility of a Donationcoder discount to the upgrade but I don't think anything came of it.

FWIW patteo, I had initially decided against upgrading myself but did the day it came out and am glad I did. It's got a ton of great new features, is more responsive than 8, and overall it's just been "tweaked". Don't get me wrong, I'm not sure that this version is a MUST have upgrade over 8 but I suspect that 9.1 or 9.2 will as some features slated for 9 didn't make it in but have been promised for later builds. Note that the $10 AUS for a portable licence is worth it, in my opinion. It's awesome to be able to troubleshoot someone else's computer without having to fuss around with Windows Explorer.

Hmm, I wonder if our Discount Coordinator cthorpe would have sufficient persuasive powers with GPsoft.

I'm one of those who would probably have given Dopus a miss if not for the donationcoder forum. I did look at it in a much earlier version but just kind of winged it without looking at it much deeper until I followed the discussion at Donationcoder.

Perhaps there are many others here like me.

What a great idea. thanks for the review  :Thmbsup:

You are welcomed.

I'm a little curious as to whether anyone might be interested in getting a discount on Inksaver or there are lots of Bill Gates and Warren Buffets here on the forum who does not care that they are contributing to the huge ink cartridge profits of the inkjet manufacturers.

Inkjet ink is around US$2,000 per gallon vs US$3 per gallon for petrol (I think)

If there is, then it may be something that perhaps our donationcoder Discount Coordinator cthorpe can help in.

Anyone interested ?

Or perhaps not that many here actually print at all.

For PocketPC lovers over at Donationcoder.

If you have been waiting to buy Pocket Informant at a discount, this is a great deal, besides their other great software.

I just got a upgrade quote from Dopus 8 to Dopus 9 and it's for Aust$50. That's a bit steep.

I might just give it a miss as I probably could live with existing functionality of Dopus 8.

On the other hand does anyone know if we donationcoders can get a discount for the upgrade ? That might change my mind.

I don't own a website.

But this looks interesting - but I'm not sure if it is in bad taste - What do you think ?

It claims to be unblockable. But if you have NoScript extension installed in Firefox, it certainly blocks it.

Anyway, even if one uses this kind of software, it should be used very very unobtrusively and selectively just to bring attention to a particular part of the website or to make the website experience better and not worse or a turn off.

I guess like a knife it can be used for good or bad.

And no, they're not popups. They're those cute little guys that show up on top of your current browser window. And while we're sure you've seen some annoying ones, like the ads that show up right on top of what you want to read, you've probably also seen a lot of places where a small popup in your same window makes a lot more sense than either replacing the window or popping up a whole new one.

Bits du Jour discount for today 15 May is UltraRecall.  Standard version is reduced from $49.00 to $19.00 and Pro version from $99.00 to $39.00.

UltraRecall is a sophisticated note taking and document/image/webpage database with a tonne of functionality and power.  I recommend it and the above discounts are really substantial.  It has only recently been upgraded to Version 3.  If I didn't already have it I would be jumping up and down for joy.

Thanks for the heads up.

I looked at Ultra Recall while it was in version 1 and one of the things that stopped me was its price.

But now that it is in version 3, and with the discount, I'm tempted to quickly look at it again.

One of the things going in its favor is the active forum
http://www.kinook.co...6adf8&forumid=22

I'm (was) long time Ecco Pro user and ever since Ecco Pro died because it could not compete with a free Outlook, I have been longing for a replacement to Ecco. I still use Ecco although I do not really want to enter more info into it since it has been out of development for so long.

Any ex-Ecco user who is using Ultra Recall like to chime in on how good Ultra Recall is relative to Ecco Pro ? Ecco is really in a class of it's own even after so many years of no development.

Yesterday, was composing a long email and suddenly IE crashed and lost the entire draft (45mins work lost).
ANd this is not the first time that I lost typed text (powerfailure, software crashes, accidental pressing of wrong keys - are some of the reasons)

Was wondering if there is a good tool (similar to keylogger but less the spyware part) that will log the typed text (preferably including formatting) and realtime autosave in the background

Any suggestions?

The program you are looking for is Smart Type Assistant - does exactly what you want (see extract below) and more.

Smart Type Assistant - typing automation, time-saving utility. Download Keyboard macros software
"Smart Type Assistant offers you Smart Diary – a useful feature for automatically saving what you type. It will help you to recall what you wrote some time ago, and to restore important documents after Windows crashes. It automatically stores everything you type in the strongly encrypted file, which can be protected with a password. It can help you to organize your archives."

I tried OneNote at some point -- fun but I disliked the fact that none of the desktop search applications I was using could index my documents' content. I'm getting a bit tired of all these different proprietary file formats on my computer. I 'm looking more and more for cross platform file formats, if possible.

I think if I'm not mistaken, Windows Desktop Search does index Onenote files.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Eventually, I discovered I actually had Animation Shop 3 which came with the Jasc Paintshop Pro Anniversary version. I never used it before until today and wow, I did not know it was that easy to use.

So I did not checked out Wink (which I used before to generate the output in swf) but I belief it does not output in gif.

You can see the results in of Animation Shop in https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=8448.0

It would be nice if there was a freeware version available that others could use to generate Animated gifs from Screenshot Captor image captures for the mini-reviews.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Mini-Review of Ink$aver (Money$aver)
« on: May 09, 2007, 07:10 AM »
Basic Info

What is Inksaver ? - That sounds like a silly question. It saves Ink or in other words Money because Inkjet Ink not only cost two arms and two legs, but is more expensive than vintage wine and oil at more than US$2000 a gallon.

And your Gosh it's cheap Guzzlejet (I mean Inkjet) printer is basically like a High powered SUV in that it is thirsty and drinks lots of it even when you don't step on the accelerator.

How do you fix the problem ?

In one word. Inksaver !

So if you want to save money, read on. And believe it or not, like Fineprint, (which also saves you Inkmoney https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6519.0 )
and Print2Flash ( https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7969.0 ),
Inksaver is unbelievably also another Work of Art and is almost idiot proof to use, and which I forgot about since it works wonderfully and so unobtrusively in the background.

Intro:
It saves Ink, money that is whenever you print to your Inkjet printer.

SCREENSHOT OF INKSAVER INTERFACE

Who is this app designed for:
Any and every one who owns a thirsty Inkjet printer (and they are ALL thirsty) and don't own the bank or is not Warren Buffet or Bill Gates and would like to reduce the need to feed their printers with outrageously expensive ink cartridges.

And all this still maintaining good printout quality if you don't try to save too much ink.

At 25% to 30% savings, you will not notice degradation in the print quality because of the way Inksaver works, using an algorithm to place the spots on the paper.

Anyway, a bit of testing will help you determine which level of Inksaving is most appropriate for your purposes.

A replacement for Draft mode
Inksaver really comes it handy too if you are testing out a print job where you have to do lots of alignment to get it just right as you can set Inksaving to 75%. You really feel good seeing how much Ink you save in such situations.

No doubt one can save ink by using Draft mode for situations like that.

But you can also combine Draft and Inksaver to double the effect.

The Good

Inksaver installs very simply and stays unobtrusively out of sight until you print. It then pops up a screen to ask you to set the level of savings you wish to achieve.

But once you are satisfied, you can set a particular Inksaving level (say 25%) as the default, and it won't even ask you in future if you like to save some ink. It just quietly saves away.

It even allows you to print a sample page with the different Ink savings levels so you can choose what suits you.

It is so simple to use and save money right away, and you don't really need to read any long help files to achieve this.

Just install and off you go !

But if you must fiddle, it also has an Inksaving Savings Estimator settings page so that you can enter the approximate number of cartridges you use per year and the default savings level. This will translate immediately to the estimated $ Savings at each level of ink savings in the animated Gif you see above.

It does not affect the printer at all as I have used it for extended periods of time without any problems. The only real problem I have is what to do with the money I saved from needing to buy less ink.

The needs improvement section

Occassionally, you may face a situation where Inksaver, will during startup tell you it cannot find a printer and you may have to run the program to add it again.

Perhaps the program author could add the ability to save even greater than 75% say to 85%, for those times when all we want really is a faint outline for testing programs print output alignment. Then again, this may not be desirable for technical reasons. But as is at 75% is quite sufficient.

Besides that, there's really no hassles or other issues at all in using Inksaver.

The one big problem you will have of course is what to do with the money you saved !. One good idea is to Donate part of it to www.donationcoder.com

Why I think you should use this product

One reason really, that is to $ave Money, if you print that is to an Inkjet printer.

And if you got a couple of kids in school, and they have to print some nice looking projects, and they never seem to get it right and keep printing another version of their 30 pages powerpoint, it's really lots of Ink and money out the door - you got two more reasons to use Inksaver.

I have used Inksaver with Canon Printers mostly, but my understanding is that it works with practically all Inkjet printers.

How does it compare to similar apps

There are no other such application that I know of.

Conclusions

This is one cool money saving application that anyone can get for free (literally since it saves you money as you print). The more you print with inkjets, the faster you save.

And don't forget to donate some of your savings to www.donationcoder.com

I would give it a 5/5.

I think if you want to synchronize with a pocketpc or palm for Todolist, the you are out of luck.

Listpro has been around since the advent of PocketPC and I think even earlier when the palm was around.

You can read a review at

Great To Do List - I have been using it for year. I particularly like the fact that it has a PocketPC version as well that you can add for another $10 making a total of $14.95.

But if you don't use a PocketPC, you just pay $4.95 for the next few hours.

The Ultimate in Lists
ListPro - save 75%

Regular price: $19.95
Bits du Jour Today Only price: $4.95
You save:     [Huge Discount!]    75%    [Huge Discount!]

You don't have to be compulsive to like lists.

Lists are great. They're interesting - there's a reason why so many sites and TV stations have lists. But more than that, they're useful.

Lists of things to do. Packing lists. Holiday gifts. Groceries and other shopping. Books, CDs, DVDs. Event planning. Beanie babies. Timezones. Restaurants. And almost everything else.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9
« on: May 06, 2007, 02:01 AM »
I use ADS intensively to keep info of hundreds of movie clips (in mpg format). I try 3 programs, total commander 6.53, xPlorer2 V1.653 and DOpus V9 all offer the ability to add addtional columns: "Title", "Subject", "Author", "Category".

1) DOpus does not has the "Category" field.
2) TC and Xplorer2 display all the above 4 fields correctly but DOpus DOES NOT! (Those fields if added in DOpus as columns, they will simply be blank columns, nothing shown at all)
3) When copy/move a file with ADS info, xPlorer2 is able to copy the ADS stream along, for TC the ADS info is dropped... I have not tried this copy/move test with DOpus before I uninstall it, I am quite disapointed in DOpus, if it can't extract the ADS info, why put those fields there...??? Am I missing something?

I use DOPUS 9 to move ADS information on files (not movies) basically so I cannot comment on the category field). I can confirm that DOPUS 9 or for that matter DOPUS 8 does move ADS properly when a file is moved.

In fact the way DOPUS is designed with customisability in mind, allows you to even copy information from a website and paste it into the ADS with a hot key.

I suggest that you post your concern in the very responsive http://resource.dopus.com/

I'm pretty sure you will get your question answered by one of the very helpful experts there.

I have on many occasions posted questions and gotten answers within hours of posting them or at worst, a couple of days.

I captured a series of screenshots with Screenshot Captor.

Now I would like to put them together into an animated gif to put into a Mini-Review I'm working on.

Does anyone know of a freeware program that can do that ?

It would be a nice touch if I can also just place the images in a folder and the program will just string them together.

Maybe Mouser may like to consider adding this capability into Screenshot Captor itself.

Adobe's own FlashPaper application is $79, which makes me wonder why you'd want this app over the one from the publishers of Flash. US$60 for a version with most of the functionality disabled is a bit of a wash for me, frankly.

Actually :
Print2Flash Basic (US$59.95) = Flashpaper 2 (US$79)
Print2Flash Pro (US$79) = Flashpaper 2 (on Steroids) But it does not exist

Perhaps another way to phrase it is :

Adobe's Flashpaper 2 is US$80; but I'm only getting functionality that I could get for only US$60 in Print2Flash.

It then makes me wonder why should I pay US$80 for Flashpaper2 when I can get "Flashpaper2 on Steroids" (in the form of Print2Flash Pro) for the same price.

Besides, Print2Flash provides Free Upgrades. Of course, no one can guarantee a constant stream of upgrades.

But in the time that I was reviewing Print2Flash and communicating with the authors, they have provided me with some insights of what is in the works and I know a newer version is in the works that could provide functionality that would interest a wider group of "regular" people.

Since this program really has only one competitor (FlashPaper) I'd have liked to see more of a head-to-head comparison.

In a sense, you are right, but in the spirit of a Mini-Review, the main coverage is on the program being reviewed. In only a full review, one would cover a head-to-head comparison.

But a quick and dirty comparison for flash functionality is here :

Think Flashpaper 2 when you see Basic in this comparison.

The whole PDF thing seems to me to be a bit of red herring. It's not really relevant to which app is better at creating Flash-based documents, the entire purpose of which is to avoid using PDF. PDF output is worth a mention maybe, as the two apps are almost identically priced and such a feature might tip the scales for one or the other, but it seems to have displaced any discussion of the real differences in the functionality between the two apps when used for their main intended purpose.

Precisely ! PDF functionality (in Flashpaper 2) is mentioned simply because for Flash functionality :

Print2Flash Basic (US$59.95) = Flashpaper 2 (US$79)
Print2Flash Pro (US$79) = Flashpaper 2 (on Steroids)

Also, the ability to remove a logo from my document is not really a feature or a benefit in this case. FlashPaper would let me create a document without logos to begin with! I see this more of a ding for Print2Flash than a benefit. Not letting you at least disable the company's logo spam in an app you've paid $60 for is really kind of inexcusable.

Interesting. Which version of Flashpaper2 are you using ? In every example of Flashpaper2 output I have seen, there is a Macromedia/Adobe logo near the top left of Flashpaper 2 document.

Try downloading a Flashpaper 2 output to take a look from http://www.gpsoft.co...s8UpdateNotesSWF.exe

My trial period for Flashpaper 2 has expired so I cannot go back to see if it is possible to remove the logo.

I remembered that the logo could not be removed and I agree with you that it's Logo Spam which is why I would go for Print2Flash Pro.

When I thought Print2Flash cost US$20, I was trying to figure out how soon I could afford to buy it. At $60, I might still be somewhat interested, if it weren't for the logo thing. But at $80, I'll probably just give it a pass.

Well, if there was enough interest, donationcoder could approach them or I could approach them for a discount for members.

Just had to chime in with one more thing. I struggled for about an hour to get Print2Flash working properly on my machine with MS Publisher. I got it to print correctly exactly once. Word and "Print Test Page" both worked fine with it, but it just ignored Publisher's print jobs.

Or so I thought.

As I monkeyed around trying to get it to print from Publisher, I kept tweaking settings, printing, tweaking settings, printing. I tried printing to the driver and printing directly from the Print2Flash app, even printing from the context menu. Every time, the print dialog would display the progress bar saying it was printing to the Print2Flash Printer on port "ne09:" (or something like that) but when the progress dialog disappeared, the Print2Flash app window would not come up, or if already up, would not respond. The Print2Flash Printer control panel never showed any jobs pending.

The infuriating part came later. I am on a network, and after I printed something else, I walked over to the network printer, and there were dozens of identical print jobs there! Print2Flash was somehow passing all the print jobs through to the default printer! Since I had been toying with custom page sizes, the print queue had stalled while the printer waited for someone to load the custom paper. More time and paper wasted while I straightened out the mess. Thankfully no one else was waiting for a critical print job.

It is off my hard drive now. No thanks.  :down:

I'm sorry to hear you are having so much problems.

What I did after reading your post was to try printing from a whole string of programs that I had, even from those that I would not normally print from.

I have had absolutely no problems at all except for Treepad which simpy refused to print to Print2Flash. I will probably have to reinstall Treepad to see if I could identify the problem.

Programs that I successfully printed to Print2Flash include:
Microsoft Powerpoint 2003, Excel 2003, Access 2003, Outlook Express 6. Others include Screenshot captor, Corel Draw, Corel Paint, Phatnotes, Listpro 3, Ewallet, Firefox 2, IE7, My Life Organized, Acrobat Reader 8, Windows Notepad, Ecco Pro. And that is virtually all the programs I could conceivably ever want to print from.

Please note that in all instances, I'm printing to a local printer, whether Print2Flash, a Canon printer, Fineprint etc although I'm in a local area network. I do not have a network printer.

218
I subscribe to a daily wisdom type of email which I receive each day. But I find that I may not read it all the time.

One of the things I like to do is to parse the information into a delimited file which I can then import into a database.

I can then search the database by criteria for what I want later.

The email follows a specific format so that can make it easier to parse the information.

Does anyone know of a utility available that can intelligently extract the information easily ?

This of course assumes that I can configure it to follow some rules so it will know what to do to convert it into a delimited file format.

219
Just a little update. No change really. What an oxymoron !

There's actually still no change to the discount of 50% for a limited period.

Perhaps that could be because I have no checked out the site for a while because I converted to Gmail and as a result, I have not used Outlook for a while. But for Outlook users, Neopro can be useful.

Maybe I should just use Outlook to backup my Gmail account for a good measure to protect against a Gmail outage.

Also, make no mistake about it, DonationCoder talked me into Directory Opus. There's no way I would have bought DO without DC. I hope GPsoft takes this into account and gives us another nice discount!

I agree. Without Donationcoder, I wouldn't even have tried DOpus.

I'm (actually was) a Norton Commander addict. Goes back to don't know when and I was so used to the many shorcuts F5, F6, F8, Alt commands etc and each time I tried to switch to some of the many other Two-Pane File Managers, each time, I found myself fumbling over their "new" routine commands. It was these routine commands that were so hard for me to get over simply because they were second nature to me as you tend to use them so often.

This issue seriously stumbled me and prevented me from exploring the many other useful features (no doubt) that other two pane file managers had.

I had come across DOpus somewhere along the way. But perhaps the price did look intimidating to me compared to the "rest". And I never got beyond that initially.

But in hindsight, it's the question of my initial perceived value (that's really a marketing issue DOpus has to deal with for people like me who started off using other File Managers).

But I only become a convert after reading through the Donationcoder forum and having used it for several months now, I will say that one of the best things about DOpus is the tremendous customizability.

But what good is this if you cannot figure it out and this is where the http://resource.dopus.com/ forum comes in.

There were quite a few times when I could not figure out how to do something, a quick search there would give me the answer or a question posted there would give me an answer by one of the expert residents in minutes if not hours. There are very responsive and come out with the right answers as well.

This allowed me to overcome my "second nature" problem. I simply duplicated the Norton Commander command set in DOpus (simply by reading their forums and posting questions there and Nudel was one of those who replied amongst many others including the author of DOpus).

After that I was off to explore all the other many useful features, such as those that allowed me to integrate DOpus with say Beyond Compare, Double Killer or any programs that accepted command line arguments).

Please note I post there under a different Forum name.

I wonder what is the long -term effect of lying on your tummy with a pillow tucked under your chest to prop you up and then using your laptop (placed in front of you).  :-\

I think it kind of forces your spine into an awkward position.

Is there any study or scientific evidence on what it does to us ?

As a compromise, when I feel like working on the laptop on the bed, I will pull the laptop towards the end of the bed so that my body (at least most of it) is off the bed and I'm either sitting or kneeling (partly on the floor). I feel that in that way, I'm not compromising my spine (as much or if at all)

But of course, the best thing to do is not to use the laptop on the bed, also remembering that doing that can also block ventilation vents at the bottom of your laptop and bring on premature death (of the laptop that is). :o

222
Just came across this discount software site that seem to have lots of software discounted from 15% and some even up to 50%.

But mostly in the region of 15% to 30%

I have only checked out a couple of the software back to their original sites and the discounts appear to be genuine.

Has anybody dealt with them before ?

223
It might be an idea to move the "What is Print2Flash?" section to the very top of the review... other than that, great work :)

Thanks and wonderful idea.

Why didn't I think of that. Done.

Perhaps we should modify the standard Mini-Review template to reflect this.

224
Please note the following updates to the review.

OS Supported  : Windows Server 2003. Vista support will be coming soon.

I will put notifications of important updates in a post in the forum as well as update the mini-review.

I had also neglected to state the fact that Print2Flash also generates the necessary html codes so that the output can be posted to the webpage. No need to write your own codes.

I would appreciate if anyone has any thoughts of what else Print2Flash can be used for, innovative or otherwise to post his/her thoughts here.

I understand your cautionary tale.

But then again, Link Commander is not necessarily like Powermarks.

In all the years I've used Powermarks, I have been very happy with it.

Never had a need to contact the author for anything other than once when I email him about support on Nov 30, 2005 for Firefox 1.5 (support for Firefox 1.0 was existing) and got a reply on Dec 16 2005, telling me that support for Firefox was ready at
http://www.kaylon.com/beta/index.html

After that email initial reply, response was quick for my next couple of queries in which he told me that he was working on a cross platform version.

I have had no need to contact him since then since the current version works flawlessly with Firefox 2.0.0.3 as well as IE7.

Frankly, I rather have a product/software that works so well, we have no need to communicate with the author than one that is really buggy and we get quick responses from the author. Powermarks is one of the 1st software that I install if I have to do a re-installation of my laptop. No bugs, no crashes, really instantaneous search and I really do tax the full power of Powermarks. In fact, I would kind of feel a bit helpless without it. Besides, how much support can I expect for US$24.95 which I paid maybe like 8 or 9 years ago

And if Link Commander is really good, then lack of support is not necessarily bad since you may not need to contact the author at all.

Better a fire chief that prevents fires (and can fight fires) than one who is good at fighting fire and is constantly fighting fires.
