General Software Discussion / Mother lode of Freeware Links
« on: October 12, 2006, 03:03 AM »
I have been visiting www.nirsoft.net for a number of years now.

But for some reason unknown to me, I have never bothered to click on the "Links" on the side bar before.

Well, I did it today and what a Mother Lode it is (at least to me).

I don't recall see this particular link to the freeware page on the recommended sites on www.donationcoder.com

Come to think of it, the Recommended site Links page on www.donationcoder.com seems to have disappeared !

I hope someone else can benefit from this.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outlook Nightmares...
« on: October 11, 2006, 09:54 PM »
Try this : I think it's quite good. I "used to use it" until I switch over to Gmail. If I remember it correctly, it worked quite well for me.

MAPILab - Duplicate Email Remover - Outlook plugin for deleting duplicate emails and posts
"Duplicate Email Remover
Current version: 2.14.2

Duplicate Email Remover is a powerful and flexible Microsoft Outlook plugin intended for the search and processing of duplicated mail messages in Microsoft Outlook folders.

This Outlook plugin processes both email messages and posts in mail-type Microsoft Outlook folders. To remove contacts, notes, tasks, journal and calendar items, please try another our Outlook tool — Duplicates Remover for Outlook plugin.

Please, pay your attention that Duplicate Email Remover can be used with Microsoft Office Outlook only. If you use Outlook Express, look at another MAPILab software - Remove Duplicates from Outlook Express plugin.

You can use this Outlook plugin to find mail message copies both in a single folder and in different folders. A duplicate message found can be:
# marked with flag Red flag
# deleted
# copied to any folder you choose
# moved to any folder you choose

Duplicate Email Remover Screenshot So, you can easily test this Outlook plugin and preview messages you may need to delete.

The Priority system within the plugin is used to search for duplicates across several folders. Using the priority system, you can specify, for example, that of the two identical messages stored in the folders "Important Letters" and "Temporary Folder", it is the message from the temporary folder that should be considered the duplicate and hence needs to be deleted (marked, moved).

Duplicate Email Remover is Outlook plugin, that is fully compatible with Microsoft "

If you take the trouble to notice, on the top right hand corner, www.bitsdujour.com sometimes give a preview of what's on sale the next day. Today's listing of BootItNG is an example. See http://bitsdujour.com/

I have read some reviews about how good BootItNg is

http://terabyteunlim...ed.com/bootitng.html

The different versions can be a little confusing  http://terabyteunlim...ed.com/prodgrid.html

But I have no experience in this area other than with Partition Magic.

Anyone care to feedback on their experience with BootItNG (vs Partition Magic) or should one just stick to the tried and tested.

Thanks Sri

In fact, by co-incidence, I was just trying out BK Replacem.

It does not exactly have a commandline, but you can define the commands in a set and call it up via the command line.

But I did find another one : It doesn't look as nice but my initial testing shows that it works.

Bulk File Find/Replace Tool
"Don’t you ever want to search many many files in nested directories and find certain text to replace with something else? Is it not tedious? Do we all not have something better to do?

So, after searching the net, I could not find a free tool and I decided it will take less time to write one than to search for one.

I created a command line tool replace.exe (which is scriptable) and decided to share it with you.

You can download the replace.exe now for free. Replace.exe is a Windows command line utility that searches files in directories to find a given text and replace with another.

Currently it does not support regular expression search, the text to search needs to be exact match, except that case sensitive or insensitive search option can be specified."
http://www.bestcode....tml/findreplace.html

306
Can anyone suggest a Freeware Search and replace utility (with command line) to replace text in a text file.

Command line commands are absolutely required in this case.

Basically, I'm looking for a utility to search for expressions in a text file that are the the following formats

(46:2)
(22:3)
(1:3)

and replace them with say
(Ge 46:2)
(Ge 22:3)
(Ge 1:3)

Why I would need commandline commands is so that I could create a batch file so I can issue a string of command easily make all the changes)

Any help appreciated.

307
Yikes !

Innocence lost !

Ignorance is bliss as they say.

Yes, there were problems that need to be repaired.

But I'm not sure you can point the finger at X1 since this is the 1st time I ever run the Scanpst.

What can you and I conclude.

I did the repair anyway. But I won't know what if anything was lost.

308
Out of curiosity have both of you actually run ScanPST.EXE on your Outlook database - or are you assuming no corruption because there are no messages? Outlook is really crap at informing users that there is a problem - it will happily open totally stuffed up PST files and continue to use them. I don't understand why there isn't some data integrity built in to Outlook rather than having to second guess the problem by running a separate and little known (also elusive) tool !

Good question. No, I'm assuming no corruption simply because there are no messages. Looking at it another way, I have had no trouble accessing my Outlook data in any case.

309
I have been running X1 for quite a long time, (even before they teamed up with Yahoo) together with Outlook 2003.

Never had a problem with PST file corruption.

But nowadays, ever since I converted to Gmail, I rarely use Outlook 2003, except to enter a few names every now and then to update the contacts.

Initially, I was diligent in downloading my gmail into Outlook 2003 as a backup and I would then use X1 to index it.
But admitedly, I have been less than diligent using Outlook 2003 to backup my gmail over the last few months. But I do continue to use X1 (Enterprise version - now free) without experiencing problems.

General Software Discussion / Document Analysis Software
« on: October 02, 2006, 02:36 AM »
I would like to be able to analyze a document by extracting all the words and dumping them into a table which sorts the occurrence of words by the order of frequency.

Of course it would be preferable if you could eliminate commonly occurring words and numbers - ie there should be a way to have an exclusion table where you can specify the words and numbers to be excluded (preferably with wildcards)

I was thinking that with information overload that we all faced nowadays, it would be nice if I could cut an article off a webpage or anywhere else for that matter and then paste it into such a software and get a very quick overview of the emphasis.

Of course the next step is to be able to see the frequency occurrence of two or 3 word phrases.

Does anyone know of the existence of such a utility or perhaps write one ?

Try the free http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/.

Just tried the above.

I tried to do the quicktime to Mpeg conversion but the program kept refusing to do it.

It may be due to error setting on my part. But the error message does say that such user errors are quite rare.

So I guess I have to drop this one for now.

I next tried to Install KMPlayer, but looking at the download page

KMPlayer Homepage - KMPlayer Downloads
"KMPlayer Downloads"
http://kmplayer.kde.org/download.php

It wasn't entirely clear what I needed to download.

Looking at the Installation notes did not quite help too !

KMPlayer Homepage - KMPlayer Installation Notes
"KMPlayer Installation Notes

http://kmplayer.kde.org/install.php

Maybe I'm a little thick in the head, but would a kind soul (perhaps nudone) point me to some exe installation file ?

Thanks

Wow !  :D

Thanks. That's quite a list. It will certainly take quite a while to figure out which works best.

I came a wonderful new freebie called Instaverse.

This is useful for you when you read devotionals or emails with bible verses.

How often have you wanted to check the context of the quoted verse but didn't because you had to cut and paste the verse onto a webpage or bible software to find the verse. ( I also wonder how this concept can be implemented in the context of helpfiles to walk users through a software application )

Well, Instaverse solves that problem, although it's only free for the Kind James Version.

Of course this may not appeal to those who have no interest in this area, but for those who do, this is a definite time saver and in the longer run may save all the geeks on donationcoder from an earlier onset of RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) of our keyboard fingers.

I quote from their Website:

InstaVerse by WORDsearch
"Do you visit Christian web sites or receive daily devotional emails? Ever want to look up a scripture fast? InstaVerse™ by WORDsearch will let you instantly see the actual Bible text for scripture references like “John 3:16”—just point your mouse at it, and the text pops up in your preferred translation! The best part is that InstaVerse with the KJV Bible is FREE!"
http://www.instaverse.com/

Works in Internet Explorer, Outlook, Outlook Express, Firefox (v1.5), and Microsoft Word.

Well, some may say that it's a promotional tool to sell more of their other Bible versions, but as is, with the free King James Version, it is fully functional and free (I say Amen to that)

Can anyone suggest a good mov (Quicktime) to Mpeg converter other than TMPGEnc. It will be a bonus if it's Freeware

I downloaded the freeware TMPGEnc from http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/e_about.html
"TMPGEnc converts *.AVI file to MPEG1, the format which is used in VideoCD. Using variety of option in TMPGEnc, you can compress your video file in high quality."

And also

" QTReader.vfp - This is a plugin QuickTime reader for the TMPGEnc mpeg encoder. You just copy this file into
TMPGEnc's folder and you should then be able to read any QuickTime movie."
http://www.geocities...alley/4942/svcd.html

After that I installed Quicktime 6.5.1

I could convert a Quicktime mov file to MPEG1. Everything looks OK except the Audio does not work.

I tried converting the sample movie that was included in the Quicktime version 6.5.1 to MPEG1 file. Similarly there was no audio after the conversion even though I checked the audio settings to ensure that I set TMPEGEnc to convert both video and audio.

Does anyone have any idea why this is so ? Thanks

Or can you please suggest an alternative.

Do you ever have problems looking for the text pointer in say a Microsoft Word document.

If so, you will love Vippy.

Vippy: the writer-friendly text cursor

Don't get lost in your own text. Get Vippy.Do you find it hard to locate your cursor, and mark the insertion point in your documents? You're not the only one. That's why you'll love Vippy, the mouse pointer you can't lose, because it's red. The difference is clear."
http://www.officeboosters.com/vippy.htm

You will also love the fact that it is FREE too.

I was doing a search and replace this morning, and I found that a the text cursor moved from searched item to item, I had a hard time looking for it.

But the free Vippy was a sight saver.

go here: http://www.slipstick.com/addins/mail.htm

scroll down to Duplicate Checkers, the last one is free:

Removes duplicate items from Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, Notes, and mail folders. Free, written by Fr. Simon Rundell and formerly hosted at www.hlyspirit.org.uk.

Thanks Kiimchi

Yes, www.slipstick.com is a great resource for Outlook users.

I was aware of that one although I have not tested it. I cannot remember why except that I may have read somewhere on some forum that did not give it a positive review.

Besides www.slipstick.com 's listing, I came across another one which looks promising at
http://www.teamscope...ilities.asp#scrubber

It's free for the first 1000 contacts.

There's also another site for Outlook add-ins at www.mapistore.com where I did a search

MapiStore.com | Advanced Search
"1-10, 49 total, on "duplicate contacts" (0.33 seconds)"
http://www.mapistore...10&search=Search+...

Anyway, cleaning up duplicate contacts can be a bit challenging if the clean-up software does not work properly.

I will have to backup the file first and work through this one carefully and slowly.

Of course I would appreciate if anyone has actual experience with any of the software mentioned.

320
I use Microsoft Outlook to maintain contacts. I also use Pocket Informant on the PocketPC and synchronize on a regular basis.

Somehow, along the way, I get a bunch of duplicate contacts in Microsoft Outlook.

Short of going through a long list of contacts to delete the duplicates, I'm looking for a safe way to delete these duplicates.

Preferably, the software should be able to highlight the differences in the seemingly duplicate contacts so that where necessary, I can merge the details into one Contact and delete the superflous duplicate.

Of course it would be nice if there's a freeware version.

Living Room / Think you are safe ? This ought to bump you off your socks
« on: September 07, 2006, 12:40 AM »
This is for those of you who feel that you have properly secured your home with good quality locks each night before you turn in.

Now almost any Tom, Dick and Harry can break into your house with no sign of forced entry which means your insurance company would just assume that you left your house unlocked and you deserved to be robbed or burgled and I certainly hope not injured.

I don't always turn on my alarm system, but I will certainly do so as this technique gain more traction on the internet.

Read it in Newsweek and watch it on youtube. I hesistated posting this here, in order to not help propagate this. But I think donationcoders need to know about this to better protect themselves.

I'm using todoList (TDL) http://www.codeproject.com/tools/ToDoList2.asp and I'm completely in awe with all the things it can do. The timing of tasks is great.

I have read your great mini-review and was intrique that you were an ex-MLO evangelist.

I currently use MLO and one of things you mentioned that was a disadvantage in ToDoList is the lack of a PPC version. This lack of PPC support may be a deal-breaker for me

Have you then found a way to at least read an exported file ToDoList and also found a way to enter or change tasks on the go on the PPC and then perhaps through an alternative mechanism synchronized it with the ToDoList on the desktop/laptop.

Do you know if there is there any intention to develop a PPC version for ToDoList ?

Update:
I did a search on the codeproject and there appears to be something for the PPC to view and edit the xml file although there appears to not be an update.

Oops, I guess I should have posted this reply in the other thread at

OK, done.

Believe it or not, I actually got everything, including one of the Automatic Labeler (bought it a couple of years ago for GTD- but hardly used - now if I can only find the batteries) and I must admit, I have been looking for amongst my things for many weeks (- so much for organization) and have just found because we have a Sunday deadline. Now one more thing off my mind.

324
PhatWare makes some really good products and CalliGrapher is probably one of the most powerful handwriting recognition engines around.

Besides that you have Phatnotes which beats the socks off Pocket Word with.

And Phatpad which is the PocketPC software that my nieces zooms in on when use the PocketPC, to draw doodle etc.

If you've been looking at picking up any of their stuff (and also software for Tablet PCs/UMPCs and Smartphones etc), now is the time.

Back to School sale, 2006
"Back to School 3-day Sale - 50% Off on All PhatWare Products

Hmm,

I wonder if it has something that can be used on PocketPC to cater to those on the go.
