Thought I will share my experience on CD Labels (the glued on type).

Basically if you are the James Bond or Mission Impossible type person, then you would want to use CD Labels.

Why ? simply because the CD labels will (Or should I say may) cause your CD to self destruct.

What apparently happens is that the glue chemicals react slowly with the layer that stores the data and causing it over time (maybe a year or two) to become unreadable.

In any case, this is what I experienced. I was scratching my head for quite a while until I noticed that only my CDs that had CD Labels that I stuck on were the ones that were causing me problems.

Here are some articles on the subject :

http://www.langa.com...003/2003-11-06.htm#1
http://www.informati...l?articleID=15800263

One way round this is to use printable CDs.

I have not had problems with printing them (yet !) with a Canon inkjet printer. Many models now come with a CDR tray for you to insert a printable CD.

Basically the lesson learnt is don't stick any labels, even small ones on CDs that you want to last a long time. And to be doubly sure, "label" them with a permanent pen (preferably on the areas around the centre transparent portion where no data is written)

....Unless, of course, patteo has a cached copy he'd be willing to e-mail to me? It's an html file entitled: dk10comparison.htm.

Tough luck Darwin, I looked real hard and couldn't find it as I don't maintain much history.
In any case, they made a mistake and they should own up.

First, absolutely NOWHERE in any of the advertising e-mails for the upgrade that I received prior to upgrading nor during the purchase process was it indicated that iFAAST was available only in special ("premium") versions of the software.

.....

Anyway, that's my rant. I'm considering my next move. I'd just demand a refund from Diskeeper

You may want to click feature comparison chart
http://www.diskeeper...rofessional.asp?pe=6

It is clearly stated here that iFAAST is included in Diskeeper Professional (Not just the Premier version)

Also note their 30 day Purchase Guarantee on
http://purchase.disk...p;Aeid=0&Apid=0#

You need to click the link to see the Guarantee which I extracted below:

Diskeeper Corporation stands behind its products 100%. We are so confident that our products will improve computer speed and reliability at your home or business that we fully guarantee your purchase for 30 days. If you are not completely satisfied with your software purchase, simply contact customer service within 30 days of your purchase date for a full refund of the software purchase price.

General Software Discussion / Re: Interfaces we love
« on: December 08, 2005, 11:06 AM »
Well, that's a good question.

I did try Total Commander a couple of years back, not in great depth I must say to do it justice. But I guess the answer is that Norton Commander did what I needed. To move files, copy files, compare efficiently and besides I do use some other utilities like macros that worked through it's commandline, quickview, an external viewer like metapad that worked well with it.

So you could say I used a DIY turbocharged Norton Commander. Of course I do use other tools like Thumbnail viewers to manage images etc and various other one-trick ponies that do their respective jobs very well.

For example, I looked at xplorer2 which is also another very capable Norton Commander on steriods with a very active forum www.zabkat.com. Yes, it did a lot of other stuff like being able to "flatten" sub-folders so that all files in folders and sub folders can be viewed within the same pane etc. So this is also moving to a swiss knife approach.

So in summary, Norton Commander + others still serve me very well. And it may be the same for others. Someday I may just give it up. But until then...

So the patch is really for people who still want to use Norton Commander and not prepared to let go yet.

Think Ecco (PIM) - there's a big loyal community that still supports it even though NetManage drop the ball a few years back because of Microsoft Outlook's appearance a few years back. Talk about killing innovation.

And since then, there have been various PIMs trying to supplant it - But none so far can match Ecco's pure elegance for it's stated purpose and it still works very well if you are looking for a very capable and flexible outliner.

By the way, if anyone care to investigate Ecco - it's freeware now

There was some mention here about the venerable Norton Commander.

For those who love it and still use it in Windows XP SP2, there's a little patch that solves a vexing repeat character problem that surfaced when you install Windows XP SP2.

Well, someone (bless his soul) has posted a free patch at

http://www.rcis.co.z...le/ncpatch/index.htm

I have used the patch for a few weeks now and it works and is very stable. No problems encountered.

Norton Commander is really useful after all these years despite the lack of development.

I have looked at various clones like xplorer2 etc (with their enhanced feature set) but somehow, I have grown used to this really useful two pane file manager and keep coming back to it. Couldn't live without it. And now it's even better with the patch that solves the command line repeat character problem.

There was a mention in an earlier post that Folderview may be crash prone.

https://www.donation...87.msg10683#msg10683

I experienced some instability a while back when I had Folderview on an Windows XP Pro system. After reading the forum post above, I decided to uninstall Folderview.

The instability seems to have disappeared. But I cannot say definitively that it was due to Folderview. It's just a hunch as it may be due to something else. Someday I may re-install Folderview again as it is quite useful.

Has anyone else experienced any instability problem in this regard ?

A little update for those who have upgraded to Firefox 1.5 and also using Powermaks.

Powermarks just indicated on their website that they expect to release an update by Dec 9, 2005 so that it will work with Firefox 1.5.

Really great to see File-Ex added to best-in-class list.

I wrote to the author Stan last night that the Mouser was having problems with MS Office Dialogs and he immediately responded which I thought was nice of him.

Personally I have had no problems configuring File-Ex to work with the MS-Office Non standard dialog boxes because File-Ex provide pre-trained files (that you need to import) and there’s even a section on their website explaining how this is done.

http://www.cottonwoo...x3prob.html#programs

That was why I wrote to Stan (the author)

But here's another few long-time user thoughts on File-Ex that might help others appreciate this gem of a software.

1. I have used File-Ex for more than 4 years now and find that it is extremely stable – never had a crash.

2. The picture in the review https://www.donation...Extenders/index.html is the default size but you can easily set it to automatically go full screen which is what I do so you see a much bigger screen real estate. In fact you can set it to any size you like.

There are some great screen shots to help you appreciate File-Ex at :

http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx3pics.html

3. Customizing of Favourite Folder and Favourite Files by Application or Across all applications is indeed very easy from the bottom part of  File-Ex dialog boxes.

4. If you want to go further and track the different documents history automatically, it works side by side with X2RecentDocuments

http://www.x2net.com...tdocuments/index.htm

which maintain a historical record of all documents you open and save automatically.

But frankly File-Ex will do just fine unless you are an absolute packrat who wants to track the history of all files opened.

5. It will also accept Tweakui.exe (Microsoft free powertoy) changes made to the Places Bar you see on the left side of File-Ex enhanced Dialog Box.

6. But just a word of caution for those using Corel products.
Corel also use Non Standard Dialogs Boxes and you may experience some problems configuring it to work seamlessly although it can be done but I have never taken the trouble to completely figure it out. No pre-trained files for Corel is provided.

http://www.cottonwoo...x3prob.html#programs

You will find that the last revision was in v 3.0.0.24 November 14th, 2002 see
http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx3rev.html

But don’t be fooled by the fact that the last revision was in Nov 2002. It is still very capable.

All in, it’s one of those programs I would install first when I reinstall my computer apart from the Microsoft Windows of course !

General Software Discussion / Re: Recommend directory tracker?
« on: November 24, 2005, 07:22 AM »
I would recommend :
Log Monitor
Version: 1.4.2
Release date: 07/25/2002
Author: Vadim Dumbravanu
Home Page: http://www.bitrix.ru/logmon/eng/

It is excellent. Only problem is the author has abandoned it so you would not get any support from him. I emailed the author when his site went offline and he responded that he would be back. That was easily more than 12 months ago but so far it has not happened. As it is, it is already pretty capable.

But you should be able to download it off the link below. If not, just let me know and I probably can find it somewhere on my harddisk.

It has lots of configuration options as far as I can remember on when to trigger an action based on changes in the directory as well as the actual actions that it can choose to take.

As for "some support" you are in luck  :D as a copy of the forum is at

OK, sorry  :( about that. I'll certainly be more precise in future.

Yes, it's Handyfind at http://www.handykeys.com/

Thanks

I'm a fan of instanteous search tools like, Powermarks, Find and Run Robot, Yahoo Desktop Search Programs, Seek (which I used before Find and Run Robot) http://home.ripway.com/2004-10/188589/

And here's another one I suggest : Handyfind http://www.handykeys.com/

Some of you may find it useful, like help you look for a needle in a haystack on a webpage, Microsoft Word, Emails and more.

Unfortunately it does not work in Firefox (which already have a better search than IE, though not quite as good as HandyFind http://www.handykeys.com/  and it's Donationware.

I have been using it for several weeks now and it's quite amazing, the speed of the search and it easily allows you to move on to the next search via the keyboard. Very good for keyboard freaks - I'm one of them.

It works very well, but just a word of caution on a bug. It places an icon in the system tray which I think it's for configuration purposes. For some reason, I can right click it but it kind of hangs on me after that- which means I cannot configure it to change some settings. And I may even have to reboot.

But in its default mode, it already works like a dream if you use IE. I have yet to email the author about this particular bug.

If anyone of you try the program and experience the same bug, do let me know.

 :D

Update of apparent bug : The author has responded to me and I terminated as many resident programs as I could and this time, there's no hanging. It could be some other programs causing a conflict.

I use LookSmart's Furl too.
The Firefox extension make it very handy to use.
So this works for IE and Firefox, right?
I thought about using some service like that, I don't like to store them locally anymore.

On the subject of not liking to store bookmarks locally, I would like to add that Powermarks also has a free web storage of bookmarks feature called NetSync.

Do note that it's not a social bookmarking service kind of thing. I myself has not used it because I prefer to keep them on the local computer.

Below is an extract from http://www.kaylon.com/help/chapter_6.htm

6.1 Introduction

NetSync allows Powermarks to communicate with the Kaylon NetSync server to store bookmark collections on the Internet. This allows you to backup bookmarks and synchronize collections from various locations, such as work and home, and access bookmarks from any computer.

NetSync is safe and secure in addition to being completely private. We derive absolutely no data from this service or its usage, it is provided strictly as a feature and convenience for Powermarks users. Best of all, it is FREE for all Powermarks users, even if you are just evaluating the software.
-------------

The really indispensible part of Powermarks is that you can be surfing along on any site and if they strike your fancy, you click the Powermarks Add Button (or press a definable hot key), add any comments you like on top of any key words and details that is automatically extracted from the site, add a site rating if you like (which is color coded by rank) and whoosh you can be on your way....until 2 months later, you vaguely remember visiting a site that mention something that you like, but you cannot for the life of you remember any other details except that you also remember it had something to do with a mention by mouser and donationcoder which you of course key in as a comment

You just enter "mouser donationcoder" and the search is an instantaneous search (literally less than a second - as fast as you can type - wish I can catch a screen video of it in action) of my thousands of bookmarks (5538 to be exact) , narrowing down as you type each letter, (just exactly like in Find and Run Robot type of search). Click the url and whoosh, you are back where you want - not in heaven, but still exactly where you want.

It's been a life saver for me many times over the years, you know as we all get older and our powers of memory retention and retrieval gets less !

The interface is clean and elegant - flat screen like, and very effective. I have yet to see any like it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I think other users of Powermarks can attest to what I'm saying.

After discovering that they have a fix for Firefox, I'm no longer looking for an alternative, simply because there's no need for an alternative and besides, I can find no others like it.  In fact, one can more than easily live with it as is even if there is no further updates.

Someday, when I can find the time, I might just convince myself to do a mini-review so you can watch it in action and give it its due justice.

I have been using Powermarks for many years now and did get the feeling that it had been abandoned, especially when I started using alternative browsers like MyIE2, Maxthon and Firefox. There has been hardly any updates of this software for a few years now. I eventually figured out a way to solve the problem of it not working for Firefox by using the ieview extension for Firefox and even emailed the author with my workaround - (anyway, this method has been overtaken by events) The author has quietly updated the software to work with Firefox (still a beta though http://www.kaylon.com/beta/index.html) with integration just like in IE - (In fact, they originally said it could not be done due to some technicalities). But I have been using it for a week now and it works very well, even with opening in Firefox tabs.

Was a little surprised that as a registered user, I did not received a notification of this beta. But nevertheless, I am very glad that I check the website once in a while. ;D

Too bad I missed the offer of 50% discount on website-watcher as by the time I discovered it, the offer was long over. Wonder if they will offer their discounts again.

Anyway, back to Powermarks - I have been hunting high and low for an alternative for some years now and have found all the rest I tried wanting in some aspect or other compared to Powermarks when it comes to the instant searching and its intuitiveness and ease of use, annotations, color coding etc.

So I guess wrongly that it had been abandoned. I'm back into bookmarking heaven with Firefox. :D
