Just got an email.  She was able to clean a little more but the computer got filled up again.

202
@fenixproductions: System restore is something I will have her trim back if she contacts me again

@tinjaw: That would be great idea if I could find something that a novice could do.

Thanx for all the help.  Still waiting on a response from my friend.

203
Maybe if not, you can get her to send a desktop support request (or whatever that is) that allows you to RDP in to her desktop.

And definitely a  on the blind deletion thing.

Tried that but can't since it doesn't have a routeable IP address.

204
How many folders could they possibly have? I'd go into the folder options and make sure everything (system and hidden files/folders) is visible. Then go one by one to find the folder(s) in the root that is(are) exorbitantly large and start deleting.

Start deleting?  That's not going to happen.  Can't have her just start deleting large folder blindly.

Hopefully I will get some feedback today as what the issue was.  Again, you never know what a user is doing and the reason i wish I could get in front of the computer.

SpaceSniffer - looks like it may work.

206
Btw, it should be easy enough finding some temp files to delete before proceeding with an install - there's usually lots of junk in easy-to-find locations imho.

Tried that over the phone.  Cleared all temp folders (windows and local setting) and deleted IE temp files but she reports that no space was freed up (yes recycle bin was emptied).  Its very strange.

207
That may work.  It requires an install so I'm not sure if they have the space for it.

(really wish I could sit in front of the computer)

I have a friend who has a computer that is running very low on disk space (1.5 Meg free on a 70+ Gig hd).  I can't remote in to take a look at it and they said they move all of their files off to the server but no space is being freed up.

I'm looking for an application (no install, free) that can report back what folders are taking up the most hard drive space.  Anything?

Create a Sell-Out switch where it makes the blog look like every other designed blog.  Then he could put a big warning before people like me switch it  :)

Nothing personal, Veign! You're still a great person :D Rant was against state of the www, not an attack on your profession ;)

Nothing personal taken.  I think the thing most people forget is not everyone sees things the way you do - I'm colorblind and that color combination is about as comfortable as ramming shards of glass in my eyes.

Also, I completely disagree with you about the web is better off as text or removing the design element.  I find it difficult to believe than anyone truly believes that whats available (websites) through the internet nowadays would be better off by removing the design part.  Agree to disagree.

FYI: I have the utmost respect for Gothi[c] and recommend him to my clients for anything server related.

I really wish I could read it but that color makes it almost impossible for me.  I can only make it a few words before needing to look away.

Living Room / Re: Fonts: Worth The Bloat?

A Note:
I would like to see an app that sorts fonts according to type, such as serif, sans-serif, humanist, modern, etc...  But I'm guessing that information is not part of the font file.

My Cfont Pro application has a Quick Detailed view that lets you sort by information stored in the font file.

The TED talks aren't supposed to be informative.  Each speaker only has 18min max.  Its about inspiration.

I think a Job posting board on DC is an excellent idea and something I always felt was lacking.  DC has a great community and some top professionals in their fields.  It's shame not to be able to take advantage of this.

IMO is would be very difficult to locate an existing job posting website that would allow for a special group to be created and limited to users from DC.   Plus using an existing board means we would be bound by their TOS and payment structures which may not fit into the DC way of doing things.

I think if DC started simple with a Posting / Response / Comment / Rating type job board that would be enough to start.  Start very basic and then add as time goes by.  I would also make getting a job free with a large 'Make a Donation to DC' button.  I know if I landed a job through DC I would donate a percentage back to the site.  I wish I had the time because I can almost see the design in my head as I type this.

Funny timing.  I just blogged about another great TED talk today on a Sixth Sense Machine.

Be warned, once you start watching TED talks you'll get caught up watching *lots* of them.

also Visual jQuery will be a HUGE TIMESAVER. It only takes seconds to find the answer you seek.

I like having cheat sheet close by too:

Here's some info on converting from DVD to VCD (mpeg layer 1):

Its because the database on the CD can't have its lock file created.  This is why moving it to a writable folder solved the issue.
