Software to record in MP3 format
« on: August 05, 2007, 12:01 PM »
I would like to make some messages by recording them into MP3 type files.

Does anyone know of a good freeware to do this ?

Actually, LAME has surpassed the Fraunhofer codec in some areas. It's top notch now. Years ago there were a few, but only LAME, the Fraunhofer codec, and perhaps some custom ones now remain.

LAME is a codec to save as MP3, no recorder itself.

For freeware recorder try:

mp3DirectCut is an audio editor and recorder. Here's a link to the forum

I plead guilty to drinking & posting... 'Spose that would be a PUI offense.

Quite often sound cards are packaged with this kind of software. You might want to check there. Better soundcards often include higher end software packages as well. I just got an Edirol outboard audio device and it included Sonar LE - quite a nice piece of software.

Totally forgot about Audacity. Audacity is a free audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Main Features:

- Record live audio.
- Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
- Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, and WAV sound files.
- Cut, copy, splice, and mix sounds together.
- Change the speed or pitch of a recording.

I like this one: http://www.audiograbber.de/

Not a recorder though. Wavosaur seems like a good option, but I haven't tried it. mp3mymp3 was featured on Lifehacker a while back.

I've used GoldWave for years, on and off.  I can't remember if it is free though.  If not it is upgraded for life for the one-time fee as I continue to download the updates and upgrades without problems.  Uses LAME codec for MP3.  A zillion features but still relatively easy to use and has never crashed despite moving hundreds of vinyls to MP3.

You probably wouldn't worry about what people think of you if you could know how seldom they do.

Is this the Pew-ee defense?  :D
