FilZip and Squeez added to Archive Tools Review
« on: September 16, 2005, 08:13 PM »
FilZip and Squeez were added to the Best Archive Tools Review. Both are very good. If you're looking for a basic freeware ZIP archiver, FilZip is a solid solution. But Squeez is a high-end archiver that deserves your attention. If you're looking for a new archiver, Squeez will impress you I guarantee.

Thanks again to Zero3k for bringing Squeez (and ZipStar) to my attention.

Squeez really needs to put up more screenshots and larger screenshots.  Interested in seeing more of the interface but don't want to install for just that reason...

Here's a good sample of Squeez screenshots taken with ScreenshotCaptor:

Main screen

Add dialog

Add dialog, second screen

Context menu options

Default compression options

Which I changed to RAR here

Archive info breakout pane

Keyboard map

Progress dialog. Note the pause button and CPU process priority slider.

Archive menu breakout

Second keyboard map

Sample Help file page. Very nice color scheme.

As you can see, it certainly looks good.

I must say Squeez is very impressive and the fact that it FULLY (not just reads, but creates) nearly every format you could want makes it even better. The only issues I have with it are:

- Like said in the review, having multiple popup windows each time you insert a file can be quite useful but can get annoying. An option to turn it off would be great.
- I know some German, but English is my primary language, so English help files would be great, since there's an English website too.
- That peach coloured bar in between the files and the archive is useful but I wish I could turn it off.
- I wish there were some more skins. You can change the look of the program but not the icons. Winrar has some great skins, and it affects the file icon and associations icon which is a great touch.

As is, Squeez is a sweet program, but with these additions, I think it would totally superb.

Is Squeez a subset of SpeedCommander or are they totally separate?

Hello!

Squeez and SpeedCommander are separate programs. But you can find many features of Squeez implemented in SpeedCommander . They are really very good programs.
