How to make a video from a sequence of images?
« on: June 14, 2007, 04:39 AM »
Does anyone know a program (preferably freeware) in which I can browse to a folder full of sequential images and it will make a video out of it?

I did something like that once in Windows Movie Maker, using images as the frames.

You can try batch-converting all the images with something like XnView or IrfanView, and then let VirtualDub process the resulting / converted files.
Do first some tests with a couple of images to be sure that VirtualDub like them.

Every format the VirtualDub open will do: PNG, BMP, TGA... even JPEG - there's probably something in the structure / format of your JPEG files that VirtualDub don't like, but creating some new JPEG may solve the issue.

BMPs are probably the way to go if you have the storage space. Avoid opening and saving JPGs since they're a lossy image compression format.

Also, if you can't get VirtualDub to cooperate you might try VirtualDubMod, I don't really know what the difference is, but it's worth a shot...

My Flipbook Printer page lists this free tool: ImageToAvi.

Checked at one of my favorite freeware sites, http://www.freewarehome.com, and came up with these:

ImagetoAVIImageToAVI will quickly convert a list of image/picture files into an AVI video.  File formats supported: input: BMP, JPEG, and GIF, and AVI video --> output: standard AVI video and BMP picture ( AVI to BMP pictures ). --- Audio input supported: WAV audio (PCM format).

ImageToAVI is actually more geared to making a slideshow-style movie of your pictures, but you might finagle it into doing what you want.

Note: Version 1.0 is still free, version 1.1 is $6 shareware, make sure you download the correct file!

SoftCodez AVI Maker - AVI Maker is a simple, but Useful Video Creator, using AVI Maker you can create custom designed AVI Video Files. Just create Bitmap files and using AVI Maker convert it into AVI Video Files.

You'd have to convert your JPEGs to BMPs, but IrfanView can handle this in a trice.

Good luck!

For stop motion / still image sequencing one of the better apps for this kind of thing is Picture To Exe. You can build a sequence of images and save as video (various format options which you'll see).

Worth well purchasing - helpful forum and committed developer (Igor). Compared to Photodex ProShow Producer (similar electronic slide show / presentation software) this is a bargain and much more compact and efficient to use. I've also used with it Scribus to make professional presentations with great success.

Note the new version 5.00 is still a beta but has a number of new features including zoom / pan etc. Best on a recent model computer with good graphics. Read more in the forum:

The other option is to use IrfanView to make a slide show and build a stand alone exe. The hot key is [ W ] to get started. Adjust Slide Advancement to Automatic, about 0.150 secs is good for stop motion.

FreshView is a freeware program for image browsing/cataloging that does much more, including converting a folder (or folders) full of images.

RE: V/Dub... Had some jpegs not work, but not the error posted -- Generally open the sequentially named images using the file open dialog, then select things like the codec. Is it possible you already had codec selected, & that problem was with the codec not accepting anything not YUV?

AVISynth will let you use an image sequence as a video. Use the ImageSource filter.

You should then be able to open the "video" in pretty much any video program (even a media player) and export as whatever that program supports. You can even apply other filters to the video if you want...
