Can we make a single key show hot keys?
« on: February 01, 2007, 11:10 AM »
Hi
I am a disabled ex serviceman and because of this I can never remember which keys on the keyboard act as hot keys and what for! I need to use hotkeys as it saves me hurting myself by continually tapping keys all over the place sorry I cant really explain myself!

Is it possible to write something that would show one page in a very small window that could be used as a reference as to what are the hotkeys and what they do....by just using one key for all ? I hope I have explained this well enough!
Please pm me if you dont understand my request!
Thankyou
Regards
Pyr8 the Parrot eater hehehehe

ps for some pc games you get like a piece of card that goes over the keys to let you know which keys effect the game ...well my idea is to have the same sort of thing but on the screen

I think this is something along the lines of the recently mentioned cheat sheet (or something like that).
I believe it also was an idea that wasn't well succeded.
Pyr8: for what programs would you like this hotkeys to be displayed?

Well.. Here's the original thread. Truth is this isn't the kind of thing that easy to do.
You see, there's no way to detect the keyboard shortcuts that each program uses. So, this would have to be configured by someone on a per-program basis. Maybe you should read the thread i mentioned, to see some possible solutions.

pyr8, I presume it's that you find the keyboard easier to use than the mouse?

For a couple of programmes & general windows shortcuts (with win-key) I made myself an excel sheet listing the shortcuts.

It was a lot of work - I wish programmes would allow you to export your shortcut list in (whatsit..) .cvs(?) format -  readable as a spreadsheet anyways.

But once done, you could leave that open on say one third of the screen & work on the rest??
I use printouts of same myself - maybe that could be an option ..

Thread linked to by jpgaiva looks interesting but sounds like it'll take a long time to get off the ground.

I take your point and good idea!! I looked at Mousers thread and what he has there is exactly what I am looking for so I hope he can finish it and let me test it!

Thankyou all for your input I guess I better contact Mouser next!

Too true.  For system hotkeys, though, there are programs to help, e.g.  ShortCutsMan (freeware) by Nir Sofer.  It lists shortcuts and their hotkeys, where they exist.

Another approach might be worth trying zridling's former favourite HotKeyz, but there's the same problem, it can't control hotkeys that programs define for themselves.
