Recent Drag and Drop Mouse Issues Killing Me
« on: January 07, 2007, 04:51 PM »
I've recently been encountering a behavior that is driving me insane.
Something has happened on my pc, don't know whether its related to new mouse/keyboard driver or what, but what's happening is that when i drag a file or object it occasionally "let's go" of it and drops it before i let go of mouse button.  it then instigates another selection and drag right away.

let me give you some examples:
if i am selecting text, with a held down left mouse button, it will suddenly clear the select and start again (as if left mouse was released and then re-pressed rapidly).

or worse if i am dragging a file in windows explorer or any other program it will without warning drop the file i am dragging and then select whatever new object i am on top of.  which is doubly unfun because sometimes i can figure out where it dropped it :(

the thing is, it's not the mouse - i've tried it with 2 mice..

anyone heard of this before?

Do you have any ahk script that monitors the "when mouse down" position? Possibly, that script is interfering with the normal behaviour of the mouse.

Sounds like the mouse to me (I can remember it happening  :'( ), but seeing you've tried two [different] mice, then... could it be the connection? Did you use the same [USB] port?

Yesterday I uninstalled all mouse and keyboard drivers (by logitech and microsoft, respectively), and after 24 hours am happy to say that the problems are gone.  This confirms that the problem was caused by either one of these drivers OR the interaction between them.

In the next couple of days i will experiment to try to figure out if i can get the drivers working again to enable some of the advanced features of my keyboard and mouse, without reintroducing the problem.  i will report progress.

On my computer at work I have developed a problem that is similar. I am unable to drag and drop with the RMB. If I click and hold with the RMD it will immediately bring up the context menu as if I had released the RMB.

Is it a logitech? I had similar problems years ago, it's a driver issue. Nowdays I don't install their drivers, and everything's fine.

I don't install custom drivers either, thankfully with USB devices and XP I don't really need it (but then I don't have a zillion buttons on my mouse that I need to program, and my keyboard is a standard Dell one I got from whereever :) ).

Hmmm, I had a keyboard with a volume control once, I'm pretty sure windows handled it with the native drivers.
