XaraX1 reduced to $19 (US) from its oringinal price of $179 !!

The first 500 orders get the CD version and after that the download version.

If you fancy a really cool app for illustration, animation and photo editing now is the time to grab a copy - at $19 you can't lose!

PS The current version is Xara Xtreme, X1 was the previous version - but it was an excellent app and the upgrade price if you later want to move up to Xtreme is only $39 - see my banner below for upgrades)

Cool beans, I just bought it.

$8 shipping is kind of silly for a CD.

Carol Haynes · « **Reply #2 on:** September 25, 2006, 07:08 PM »

It's from the UK and it comes in a DVD case with some documentation.

allen · « **Reply #3 on:** September 25, 2006, 08:47 PM »

This has been my primary graphic design/editing software for quite some time now, have been using it since it was Corel Xara -- an amazing application that I don't regret having paid full price for. But man, that 19 dollar price tag is sweet.

Documentation is good! I don't feel so bad about the shipping now.

So I decided to try to look into what I had bought, and I can't find any information on X1. Just Xtreme. Are they basically the same thing but with Xtreme has a few more features?

mrainey · « **Reply #5 on:** September 25, 2006, 10:22 PM »

Thanks a bunch for that one Carol. I opted for the download version, it's already installed and looks very nice. If you and allen think that highly of it, I'm sold already.

One of the few programs I've run across that actually wouldn't install until I closed everything else (firewall, anti-virus, etc.)

That's useful information to know!

The sequence of programmes was:

ArtWorks (on the Acorn RiscOS platform - probably mid 1980s but I can't remember - I still have a copy somewhere)
Xara
Xara X
Xara X1
Xara Xtreme

Xara and Xara X were long term developments of ArtWorks moved to the the Windows platform and enhanced. X1 was a single upgrade to X and then Xtreme became the next version - so basically X1 is just the previous version to the current one.

Don't expect too much from the documentation - IIRC it was a keyboard shortcuts card. Having said that $8 delivery is probably cost price with UK postage prices these days - they certainly won't make a lot of profit out of that (if any) - and at least they deliver properly packaged CDs unlike most suppliers these days you usually just send stuff out in a paper slip cover! And they still give the option to download while you wait for the package.

My only gripe with Xara deliveries is that they tend to be a bit slow (esp. when they are running promotions) but that just refelects the fact that they are a small company doing everything by hand.

For the most part. Xara X1 was undoubtedly a solid version of Xara, though some of the additions to xtreme are really cool (and definitely worth the upgrade if you find you like X1 -- no better vector editing app out there

Heh. I'm more interested in finding out What's Old. I know that back in the early days when you and I first met, Allen, that you used Xara to make animations. I thought it was weird to have one file for every frame (at that time I was using PSP & Animation Studio) but now that I've gotten Flash I can't stand the idea of going back to the old way. So I know Xara is tried and true for you, but I've never explored it before and don't know how it compares next to Flash.

I guess I'll just look at Xtreme and subtract the things I see in What's New and that will tell me what X1 is all about. Thank goodness for common math education!

allen · « **Reply #10 on:** September 26, 2006, 02:57 AM »

Yeah, liked it way back then . . . and it's really come a long ways since. Fortunately, if you -do- like it, it can export flash-usable art

Best of both worlds.

tomos · « **Reply #11 on:** September 26, 2006, 08:01 AM »

I was going to just download it but went for the posted version -
as you say Carol its nice to have a decent CD packaging & a shortcuts-card

- only cost me 6 dollars postage (maybe cause its just within Europe) but then got charged VAT tax -
still, wont break the bank @ under $30

Carol Haynes · « **Reply #12 on:** September 26, 2006, 08:18 AM »

I have always found it slightly odd that they price in dollars - especially being an exclusively UK company.

I figure they assume Americans can't do sums

Unfortunately they have no choice on VAT as an EU based company so all European orders are stung - but at least it as the UK rate which is lower than many EU countries ! In fact many countries outside the EU now charge VAT on parchases to the EU. I am never sure if those taxes ever actually make it to the EU though, but at least you avoid ridiculous courier charges and import duty on delivery if you have already paid VAT.

Do anyone know if there's an addon/plugin for reading (and possible saving, although not necessary) .svg files?
or do I have to upgrade to extreme, if that supports the format
or the 3. possibility a free converter from svg to a format that Xara supports

Carol Haynes · « **Reply #14 on:** September 26, 2006, 11:35 AM »

Don't think it has been done yet but there are noises on www.svg.org (check out links at http://www.google.co.uk/search?ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&q=XARA%20SVG)

mrHappy · « **Reply #15 on:** September 26, 2006, 05:43 PM »

Thanks for the link, but already looked at it, it was the only one I could find about Xara and svg
But can't see anywhere about it being done, so I'm assuming it not.

Had hoped that someone might know of a "secret" addon or program that could do it

JeffK · « **Reply #16 on:** September 30, 2006, 01:32 AM »

I assume one can't download the full Xara Xtreme.

Jeff

Carol Haynes · « **Reply #17 on:** September 30, 2006, 02:27 PM »

There is a trial version for Xtreme which is fully functioning (AFAIK). If you purchase it they give you an instant unlock code and also send you the CD Pack which includes loads of Video tutorials and demos of other apps. You can also choose to include a printed manual now (I think - there didn't used to be one but I think they have got one now).

JeffK · « **Reply #18 on:** October 04, 2006, 10:00 AM »

Thanks Carol, I accessed the trial that way. I got an email from Xara indicating that I could upgrade from X1 to Xtreme for $US29 but I can't find that price via any link they gave.

Anyhow if I do decide to upgrade I might do it through your affiliate link. I,ve to decide wheteher I really want/need it first.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

If you order the upgrade via my link the cheapest price is $39 - if you want to get it for $29 perhaps you should contact Xara by email and ask them how to go about that. It might be that it was only during the offer period - but I don't know for sure.

I think that would be an unfair assumption on their part. I'm almost sure that, if I knew what sums were, I'd be able to do it ~~some~~ one...

Thanks for pointing out the link!

LOL ...

Actually here is an American sum ...

199 X 0.53 = 199

can anyone guess what it is and where it applies ?

Easy, it's Q.3 from the [name-withheld leader-of-the-Western-world] IQ test (same as Q.1 and Q.2).
Typically, the answers to questions 1, 2, & 3 are averaged and ought to result in 63, should you asc.

Carol Haynes · « **Reply #23 on:** October 05, 2006, 08:36 PM »

LOL - but no cigar

Actually it is a real, honest to goodness, Uncle Sam sum ...

Someone must be able to guess where the logic applies ...

cranioscopical · « **Reply #24 on:** October 06, 2006, 12:47 AM »

It's awfully close to the current £UK/$US conversion rate... on the right day £199 *.53 gets you $199
