Kindly let me know when you find something broken.. I suspect there will be some things based on the smf code I have merged being troublesome.

If you use a Linux-based server for the DC forum, you might already have taken a look at one or more misbehaving processes with a tool called: htop. Use a terminal multiplexer (Terminator is one of those). Those allow you to divide up your terminal screen into different sections and in each section you can start a new session. This makes working with the command-line a lot more efficient. Once you have used a multiplexer in there, you won't go back.

A misbehaving process might already give you an indication where to look. You are likely to use a Windows system to log into your server, so it could be a good idea to use a better solution than Putty. That is called SmarTTY.

If you use a Windows-based server for the forum, you might take a look at: TaskExplorer  which happens to be featured on ghacks.com today. With that tool you can see more info regarding any process than you can with Process Explorer from SysInternals. While process Explorer is executable with a size of about 2.5 Mbyte, extracting the Task Explorer results in a whopping 60 MByte, which happens to be bigger that the whole SysInternals Suite of tools.

Anyway, TaskExplorer shows you really a lot of info about a process, even which website it tries to communicate with. Maybe there is a connection required and your server is currently blocking it. Not all processes behave well when not being able to "phone home"...

The site is still not behaving correctly, however, mouser has gone to grab some shut eye so he can hit this with fresh eyes in the morning.

For the moment the server seems to be stabilising but as mentioned earlier there are still some things that shouldn't be happening.

If the website does for offline in the meantime then don't panic because it will be fixed in due course.

That being said, whilst posting this the server SEEMS to be holding up, so let's hope it stays that way so mouser doesn't lose his mind!

Just reporting that the rss feed is working again.  I saw it was down earlier, but now it works.

I hope I'm not speaking to soon -- but this comment gave me a clue that may have been the cause of all the problems -- so thank you!

Well that was hellacious, but I think it's solved.
I reported the bug(s) to smf here: https://www.simplema...x.php?topic=571025.0 and https://www.simplema...x.php?topic=571026.0

we are well aware of this issue. we are working on getting a patch out to fix this.

Love how they (being any corporation/business out there) are always aware of an issue but never put a fix out and yet within 45 minutes they have a fix after your posting.

In fact, this forum is about the social-est of any social media I participate in.

I just noticed that people who have a website in their profile have it showing twice.

Does the current version of the forum software have an option to enable inline code formatting? I mean the minimal code formatting of short strings within a sentence using backticks like `these three words` in contrast to linebreak separate code blocks, which we already have. If yes then turn it on please!  :)

Markdown uses backticks for inline code and many platforms like GitHub and Reddit support it.

I don't see anything in the bbcode reference that might implement this, as the forum uses bbcode, not markdown.

https://www.bbcode.org/reference.php

I took a quick look at the mods site, and didn't see anything to recommend as far as a modification that might allow that.

Some forums that run on phpBB have inline code and use a [c]tag like this[/c]. For example https://www.autohotkey.com/boards/
I found this customization page https://www.phpbb.co...bcode/inline_bbcode/ but I'm not sure if that is what AutoHotkey and others use today. I know that DC uses SMF though, so maybe that phpBB stuff is not relevant anyway?

I like to use inline code formatting in instructions e.g. when describing some command to type in the terminal or an exact filepath. Less ambiguous than just using quote marks or bold and more compact than adding a code block, especially if there are many small such snippets in a text.

I don't know if that would work on SMF.  Mouser would have to say.
