NANY 2020: quick generator peek
« on: October 09, 2019, 04:21 PM »
(One more software for this year before I resort to not finish the other two large utilities I had planned for 2020... I'll dump my other three tools which I had released before some time before New Year's Eve, as always. ;))

NANY 2020 Entry Information

Application Name quick generator peek
Version 1.0
Short Description Adds a toolbar button to display the current website's Generator meta tag (if possible) to your Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi browser.
Supported OSes All which have Chrome or something.
Web Page https://hub.darcs.ne...quick_generator_peek
Download Link https://chrome.googl...ianlfcpjdjhacgljabjb
System Requirements
  • Chrome or Vivaldi or something.
Version History
  • 1.0: Works. Kind of.
Author hi.  8)

Description

Some software, like certain HTML editors and weblog software like WordPress, adds an information to your site's source code that says which software was used to generate it. This Chrome extension will read this information and display it as a pop-up.

Planned Features
Nope. This is quick and dirty. There are more sophisticated add-ons which do everything beyond that.

Screenshots
See the website.

Usage

Using the Application
The extension will add a toolbar button. Use it.

Uninstallation
Remove the extension from your browser. Done.

Known Issues
Websites without a generator tag will still have the toolbar button.

Nice. I could try it only if it had Firefox version, but i still commend your efforts.

I won’t do anything for Mozilla anymore, sorry.

Not surprising, I suppose - considering what they seem to have done to their browser, users and extension developers. I don't think there's anyone left for them to p*ss off now. I used to be such a fan too.

Same same, but different. Firefox with annoyance reducers is still Firefox. And Pale Moon has become a nightmare as well.

I do not develop for FireFox but use it and still happy with all the extensions it has.
I can not do without those extensions I use regularly.

Chrome is very very slow for me. Edge is fast (obviously) but lacks the extensions I want.

Anand

Presently these,

BTW I am missing 'Extension Dumper' extension now.

I had checked Vivaldi but did not find anything to leave FF for it.

Most of those have equivalents on Chrome and Vivaldi AFAICS.

If Vivaldi works same, then no benefit in changing FF.
Chrome I use just to check sites. FF for all my works.

Vivaldi is much more powerful these days, feature-wise.

Checked https://www.slant.co...a-firefox_vs_vivaldi, but even after checking the pros/cons, I did not find any feature which I require and is missing in FF. Well maybe in future, if I need one, I will check it in both.

Slant is not a reliable site to compare software. Try it yourself.

Somewhat on topic:
of course it is not possible to compare browsers with audio/video players but using PotPlayer I paste the youtube url and it barely nudges the cpu, ram, disk usage. In FF (btw with only 1 addon) it keeps eating all of them. I have tried tweaks and config settings for years, not just recently, it is a losing battle, it is crazy what browsers have become. Chrome seems to behave a bit better but it is not vast improvement. Again this is not one version or one cheap computer, etc.

Firefox has lost its track somewhere in its 20s. Poor jwz - I’m sure he’s embarrassed.

Well I installed and tried Vivaldi. First impression looks good and also speedy.
Checked gmail, seems faster than FireFox.
Next searched for extension Feedbro (rss reader), no result. rss also no result.
My schedule of reading all rss feeds from all forums, including DC, got stopped.

Back to Firefox.

Will check time to time for my required extensions, to give a go again to Vivaldi.
BTW I also use Opera for its free VPN.

Anand

For RSS, I warmly recommend Newsblur.

I have no favorite or dislike for any browser. I use X 'browser' which satisfies my need and increases my efficiency.
Along with required extensions, I have found FireFox fulfilling my current need.

I began with Netscape, Ie, Chrome and FireFox. I have tried Opera, Vivaldi (now) and many other browsers.

My first chance of using FireFox came when I was using Chrome and Gmail was introduced. I need a keyboard shortcut to delete a message quickly. I found Greasemonkey and script to delete and also label. I myself made script for removing label and shared in that forum.

Now all is available in GMail itself, but that incident showed me the power of extension in FireFox. I have posted above my current extensions. I may post in details what benefit I get from them and why I can not live without them, even if the browser itself is more powerful otherwise.

Anand

I need extension (free) in the browser and Feebro is satisfying my need now. It is totally in my control and easy to use. I previously used Google rss reader and also CommaFeed.

@anandcoral

Feedbro is available on Chrome Web Store. I once tested it with a Chromium fork but I prefer desktop RSS readers.

By the way, is Paste Text Like abandoned for good?

No. None of my pet apps are abandoned. They are like my children.
Only problem is that the father is heavily under pressure of bread and butter jobs.

The one NANY 2020 I am working is not getting full times as desired, due to my work pressure. I still have hope that Almighty will give me free time from all these "must-do" works.

Regards,

Anand
