Thread on 3d Printing Cody Model
« on: February 01, 2018, 07:01 PM »
Well, I went ahead and did it, I bought a 3d printer.

Anycubic I3 Mega:
Supposed to be a good 3d printer for beginners, and nice and compact.

I'm just printing the test thing now.

What I'd really like to do is have a 3d cody -- anyone have enough 3d (and 3d printer) experience to try to make a version of Cody our mascot for 3d printing?

Awesome! I'm kind of jealous. :P

I'm pretty sure that at one point in time Gothi[c] made a 3D image of Cody in Blender. I'm not sure what it takes to convert/prepare a regular Blend file to be 3D printed, but it may be worth digging up that model. I think I may have it archived somewhere on my HDD, but I won't have access to my PC for a few days.

Nice find!

Actually, is that the right one?

I notice earlier in the thread a link to another blender file but it's 404.

The other one that 404s is the one I was talking about, but the animation file you linked to should also contain the Cody model. And it's even rigged for animation!

Here's an STL to get you started. Gonna need support.

Mine came out a little worse -- I printed him upright and one of his legs became encased in supports and came off with them.

It's a good start, but I think we're going to need a substantially better looking Cody if it's something I can print and paint and send to people as a thank you.

Maybe a design with cody sitting would be more in his character, like:
4by3-games-div-small.jpg

I'm trying to think what kind of image would be best and be feasible..

Maybe him sitting holding a big coin that said DonationCoder.com on it, or maybe something where we could customize the text so we could give it out as an award and make it say different things like "1000 post award" or "NANY 2020", etc.

The thing is, it would really have to look like Cody not just a distant 8 bit relative..

Are there any 3d modeling experts who could make a seriously accurate cody?  Are there places we could *hire* someone to do it?

Yes, you have to think about not only what's going to print most successfully (least support, or support in least obvious places), but also where the strength is going to be after printing. Think in terms of woodworking... if you print cody upright you have "short grain" in the legs—easy to break. The way I did it, the layers extend (at least partially) through the legs from the body, adding strength.

You could make a request on Polycount.

Don't know about other countries but here you can go to certain Officeworks stores, (national office supply chain), get 3D laser scanned (or an object), and get the 3D file for printing.

Could scan Baby Cody if he's not on holiday and is up to taking a chance on laser incineration.

Photogrammetry is also something that is becoming easier and easier to do with regular cameras/equipment and software. But methinks that Baby Cody isn't "seriously accurate" according to nudone's model sheet.

Cody's a parrot now? Or is it just that he can't spell 'pirate'?

So far I've been using my 3d printer quite a bit -- but only to print 3d parts for board games that I play.. It's slow and fiddly and prone to messing up, but it absolutely feels like the future.. There can't be much doubt that in 10 years we will all have these machines in our houses.

If we could get a cody holding a big coin/medal where we could customize the writing it would be so awesome to be able to print out custom "awards" to send to people..

I've installed but not used OpenSCAD yet.  I've noticed that there are quite a few thingiverse items that are "parametric" and made with it -- meaning that you can adjust some parameters to change various aspects of the size and shape.

It may not look like Cody but that's very cool... Now you've got me excited to think of something to use OpenSCAD for! I'm sure I'll think of something..

Nudone himself has started to explore the use of Blender in making a 3d cody.

Aryq maybe I could ask your eventual help in using OpenScad to make a coin base with some programmatic "text" on it, as the base of a customizable cody award?

Sure, I can look at that. Could you maybe draw a sketch of what you're thinking?

Edit: Also is there an "official" DC font?

I think Arial Bold is as close to an official font.

Screen_Shot_2013-08-03_at_5.42.09_PM_preview_featured.jpg

I actually searched for "customizable" tagged coins on thingiverse (Customizable i think means openscad models), and found a bunch:
https://www.thingive...;dwh=965abaae707f977

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:127588
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:47484
https://www.thingive...se.com/thing:1703911

https://www.thingive...se.com/thing:2448171 <-- this one even has text around the edge(!)
new_7b95b13044288053c620f1be56bbaff8_preview_featured.jpg

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:185184

In our case I'm thinking like a 2-3 inch diameter coin "base" -- with cody sitting/standing on it (glued or pegged).
So actually the center of the coin won't be too visible I guess, since cody will be on it.  But you could imagine curving at the top of the "coin" it could say DONATIONCODER.COM and curving at the bottom it would say some text that would change depending on the award, like "N.A.N.Y. 2020 AWARD" etc.
