pass time during flights
« on: December 24, 2015, 09:09 PM »
hello!

my flight is 3.5h and I need something to help the time pass

what could you suggest me?

I was thinking of music. But how can I browse youtube and with one click save the sound of these songs (without having to sit and listen to all the clip) and create a folder with these songs to put in my Samsung Note 2 to listen? I need, in other words, a fast and convenient way to create a folder with songs from free repositories. Any idea?

also will the phone last these 3.5h?

thanks!

I picked up a while ago a bunch of 4th rate imitation iPod mp3 players for stuff like this. You won't care if it gets lost / dropped (taken by security?! 0.o), so your main player(s) are safe, plus some equally cheap headphones.

Then I suggest you experiment with indie artists who offer free downloads, and skip Youtube for this trip. For ex the ones I have hold about a Gigabyte of music, anywhere from 40-70 songs, and then you just take a spare battery (triple a) and you have music for 7 hours.

Plus I think Indie Musicians *REALLY* need help and I think we could have an awesome "recommend *permissive / creative commons / cool / indie / other" music thread here!

(note to self - get a grip and get back on emusic whose tunes are sometimes permissive.)

(If this idea takes off, after he gets back, a mod can then just split off the remaining posts say in February.)

Download SlimJet,
Install,
Browse Youtube,
Push the button.

It'll download both the MP4 video and MP3 audio generally.

Jamendo!

You might also want to consider some grown up coloring books and a set of colored pencils. You can get them at some of the larger brick & mortar book stores like Barnes & Noble, or if you have time to order them online, you can get a bunch of nice ones, reasonably priced, here.

I find this works fairly well for Firefox.

https://addons.mozil...utube-to-mp3-button/

It puts a button under the current video.  Press the button to convert to mp3 and download.  Sometimes it will balk and make you paste the url in.  But most of the time it is as simple as it gets.

I download jazz so I am not sure if that matters.  The resulting mp3 files seem to all be 192 kbit.  If it sounds good in the video clip the mp3 sounds fine.

I spent the last long haul flight I took eating and freaking out the Canadian pig farmer in the next seat:
"Is that a FIRE INSIDE THE ENGINE???!!"  :o
"!!! ...I'm pretty sure that's just the wing light."

Is the pig farmer available for gigs?  That may be more memorable than classic rock.  :D

That depends on your phone, (mine will last almost a day just playing mp3s), and considering it will be in flight mode, (no active RF transmitters), the battery will last longer.

as for the youtube-to-mp3 button, unfortunately it's not a single click operation! it opens a website and you need to go to that and download it manually!
as for the slimjet, it seems very promising, but could I disable the automatic merging of audio and video? I only need the audio! (or ideally only save the audio!)

http://www.slimjet.c...video-downloader.htm
If you only want to quickly download the audio track without wasting time downloading the video data, you also have to wait until the video has started playing for at least 5 seconds. After that, click the "Download Audio" button to start downloading the audio track in mp3 format.

Otherwise just cancel the MP4 component of the download in the downloader.

You could collect the mp3s before the flight and listen to them during.  It seemed from your post the major concern was not having to listen to the whole track to get the track from the cache.  Also it was not obvious you were using a phone.  Guess my ESP is not up to par.  There must be a few dozen tube downloaders out there Maybe you could pass the time by trying them out?  :)

thanks, I think I will just delete the mp4 as may not have the time for the video to start for 5 seconds
excellent solution though, I did very good job, gathering many songs and albums within few minutes
now any good mp3 player for android please, that will have fast forward while listening to the sound? or maybe automatic detection of songs for single files of whole albums?

I'd think any good mp3 player has a "skip track" so don't bother "fast forwarding" the actual song, just skip.

In that cheap little player (multi clones of it) I had pre-selected songs I knew were my type, and so even though I had forgotten they were there, I could just hit "next next next play-that next next next next play-that" (my wording for buttons) and off they go.

you mean they will skip a song, if the whole mp3 file contains many songs, ie. a whole album?

Glad you mentioned this.  I can use it myself to slpit albums:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp3splt/

Supposedly it will auto fetch track times from the internet for splitting.
