Presets not saved - CHS
« on: October 02, 2014, 09:28 AM »
I am new to CHS but am having trouble saving any presets for text formatting.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the instructions, but as far as I can tell I'm following the procedure to save some presets. The preset files are being created in the PresetViews file, but the presets don't appear in the Clips Menu (single left click on system tray icon).

And no dropdown list is created for the 'Modify Format/Case' button in the Memo window (double left click on system tray icon).

My laptop is on a server domain and therefore 'My Documents' is a redirected folder - I don't know whether that bears on it. But the preset files are being created. I'm on Windows 7.

Please help me!

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum, Grayp

It sounds like you are doing everything right -- if the preset files are being created, they should show up in the menu and in the Modify Format/Case drop down button.

My laptop is on a server domain and therefore 'My Documents' is a redirected folder - I don't know whether that bears on it.
I am wondering if this is causing the issue.. Let me check the code and see what I see -- I might send you a debug version that will tell us where it is looking for the preset files, which might tell us what's wrong.

It has to be a simple problem, so i'm sure we can get it fixed asap.

Question:

Is the preset menu (and Modify Format/Case dropdown) completely empty? Or does it show some predefined presets just not your newly saved ones?

Sounds good - thank you.

I have only had CHS installed for a few days and it gave errors quite a few times regarding the attached screenshots. But I've persevered with it, uninstalling and reinstalling a few times. The main thing that seemed to resolve it was manually creating the folders in the relevant directories (it wasn't creating some of them itself - I also had the same problem with Screenshot Captor).

The Modify Format/Case dropdown is completely empty (as default?).

The preset menu just contains a blank No1 and the default No2 (I think those two were there as the original defaults?). Screenshot attached.

The main thing that seemed to resolve it was manually creating the folders in the relevant directories (it wasn't creating some of them itself - I also had the same problem with Screenshot Captor).

I think I may understand why that is happening -- and it's definitely related to the network path issue.

You've given me a nudge to try to fix that, which I will -- however it does sound like perhaps the simplest and most foolproof thing for you to do at this point is exit CHS, and edit the ConfigDir.ini file in the Clipboard Help and Spell program files directory, and tell it to use a local path for saving it's settings.  This should solve your problems.

OK thanks.

I'm not very accomplished at editing unusual file types, but am happy to have a go at anything.

Do I need any special software to edit the .ini?

How to I change it - is there some text/language I need to modify?

The file path I'd want it to save at is C:\GCP stuff to backup

You should find a file called ConfigDir_Sample.ini in the CHS program files directory.
Rename that to ConfigDir.ini (or open it in notepad and then SaveAs ConfigDir.ini).
Then in that file you will see at the top a line like "// CONFIGDIR = %MYDOCUMENTS%"
Change that to "CONFIGDIR = C:\GCP stuff to backup\CHS" (removing the // at the beginning of the line).

Thank you - that makes it simple for me.

The only snag - I can't find a file called ConfigDir_Sample - screenshot of folder attached.

Can you please help me from here?

Thank you.

ah my mistake.  so just edit ConfigDir.ini no need to rename it.

Great - that's solved it! Thanks!

Had a small problem with it saying that I'm not authorised to save the new version of the .ini in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Clipboard Help+Spell folder, but I saved it to the desktop and then was permitted to drag it in from there.

Appreciate your help!

Am I likely to need to do the same with Screenshot Captor? It messed around the same at first but has been quieter for the last day or so.

it seems likely, but it might be worth leaving it as it and seeing if it behaves.

OK - thank you.

Is the process exactly the same for Screenshot Captor if it does need doing?
