Another useful new feature is that in the search bar, you can start your search with ~ to exclude screenshots that match a pattern.  This can be useful for example, if most of your screenshots are named with the default "Screenshot - " and you want to show only files that are named differently, etc.

What do you think of this?
An extremely good idea.
I have to stop and think what to do every time either that happens to me or I want to use object editing mode (thinking hurts my brain).

Plus, I just mentioned another benefit of SC in this other SC topic, which is how to get a useful gallery view.

When you switch to object mode to add an object, the bottom panel which normally shows filename and memo now looks like this:
[...]
The point of this is to solve the problem where new users click on the arrow toolbar button or something similar, and then find themselves in object editing mode with no idea how to get out of it.

What do you think of this? Any suggestions for additional/modified text to display there for beginners?  Should I color it differently so it will really stand out?

I've always found the obect modes confusing, so think this is a good idea
The only thing is - it isn't showing here. Should it be on by default? I dont see any related settings on the relevant tab.

Should be enabled by default.

Help -> About should show version 4.6.2.
if not, download again.

either I was too quick on the draw earlier - or you too slow ;)
Now showing 4.6.2 here (no change in the minimise aspect FWIW)

I think i'll have the ObjectMode text context-specific to the tool you select -- that will let me add specific help on each drawing object tool!
That ought to help people using objects a little.

EDIT: DONE

mouser, since you asked...

Maintaining my reputation for being as thick as two short planks, I failed to read the text in that bottom panel (largely because I was in object mode already, so I didn't notice anything change). Once I did see it, it took me about 3 minutes to locate the white cursor (because it's a white arrow).

Do you think that separating further the object tools from the other items on the vertical toolbar might help, i.e. introducing a larger gap between 'Configure' and 'Selection modes'?

Do you think that "You are currently in object-editing mode." could be made to stand out within the panel in some way?

Good suggestions.  As far as locating the white cursor/arrow button, yeah it's tricky to find, but newbies can also click that big Close button in that text area too, which is what i suspect will be more common.

Again, i don't think this is going to be super useful to people who already know how to use the program, but hopefully a new user who feels stuck and unsure of how to get out of object editing mode will eventually see that text and derive some solace from it.

New beta 4.6.3 uploaded.  Most notable improvement is to the caption tool (last button on toolbar); you can now use it to modify a previously added caption.

I note that you could already edit the caption text visually (double click in the caption object), BUT you couldn't easily resize the caption box size.

Now by pressing the caption toolbar button you can edit the text and have it automatically resized/recreated for you.

You'll also find a Remove Caption item in the Object menu.

ps.

Please remember as always that Screenshot Captor is not Photoshop/TheGimp/PaintShopPro/RealPaint/AdobeIllustrator (!)

So if you want to do serious graphical EDITING and adding of fancy text and graphics, use a real graphic editor (and by all means create a tool entry for your editor of choice within Screenshot Captor).

This thread is now closed and obsolete since a new official release of SC was just uploaded.
See you on the next beta thread.

Thank you everyone for your help testing.  If your requested features and fixes did not make it into this release, don't hesitate to remind me on the next cycle
