Question about post-capture file naming
« on: March 28, 2013, 03:44 PM »
I have a question about automatic file names and automatic captions in SC4.

This is where I'm at...

(I'm using a custom date string of %b-%y)

Default new filename field has:
%description% %customdate%

Automatic captions has:
%description% %customdate%

Post Capture - Actions has:
Add caption to image checked

Post-capture pop-up form has:
If custom comment...add a caption for it checked

So, if I grab a shot from "BBCeditor" and add "Baffled" in the post-caption pop-up field (because I am)
I get a caption of: Baffled BBCeditor Mar-13
and a file name of: BBCeditor Mar-13 (no "Baffled")

Is there any way for SC naming to use the comment added in the post-capture pop-up, in the same way that the captioning does?
In other words, I'd like the caption and the name to be identical, each using whatever I type into the post-capture comment field.

Any help  would be appreciated — but make it fast, they don't let me out of the rubber room all that often.

So your question is about auto-naming the file right? You want the FILENAME to contain the custom comment you type into the post-capture dialog, is that right? (that's not currently possible but it's something i could try to add).

Or is there something else you're trying to do as well?

Probably not along the lines of what cranioscopical is looking for??
But after some time using the great new caption pop-up feature I'll throw this out to consider. It's kind of similar but different.
At times it's handy to take one or a couple of quick screenshots that are different than say a group of shots (or category) that have been set up using the dedicated file naming or quickfield setup from configuration or the main window.
Would it worthwhile to have an additional user input line in the pop-up for entering a "special" filename different than the pre-configured one. With maybe a tick box that says "use the over ride" otherwise the standard configuration.
Possibly the override could come from the caption?

An idea to kick around anyway. Might be useful to others.

Yeah I can definitely see the value in being able to quickly customize the file name from the post-capture dialog..

[ps. I'm going to split off these posts on quick naming to their own thread]

I would like the file name AND the caption to be identical.
AND I would like both to be automatically generated.
I would like the automatically generated material to be based on the custom comment from the post-capture pop-up plus whatever else is set in the file naming template (in my case that's %description% and a custom date string).

I wasn't asking if you would add this (though it would be nice if you could). My question was based on the assumption that I had missed something in the current options.

I'm being very very lazy here - I can just copy the sub-string that I want from the file memo and paste that as the file name.

Also, I note that SC still doesn't make me a cup of tea!

What you want can't be done yet.. but I will try to add it.

The only quick tip to remind you of as a workaround is that to quickly rename the current file from the main window just change the filename in the filename edit field at the very bottom and hit enter.

Thanks, I realize it would take a little sleight of code.

The only quick tip to remind you of as a workaround is that to quickly rename the current file from the main window just change the filename in the filename edit field at the very bottom and hit enter.
And very useful that field is, too — I use it! The memo beneath can be made to show the caption text, which can be copy/pasted as the file name. Then again, why waste a second on what the computer can do in a nanosecond?  ;)

yeah i think the solution is to let people have some control over the filename from the postcapture dialog, so ill put that at the top of my todo list.  that should let you do what you want.

 Much appreciated! If you are able to implement that it would mean for me that I could have a matching and meaningful file name and caption by typing only a single word (such as "bachelor").
