It sort of reminds me of the interface on Minority Report, which was a concept that I loved.

It sort of reminds me of the interface on Minority Report, which was a concept that I loved.

How Minority Report trapped us in a world of bad interfaces.

(Emphasis added)

I wish I could get away with charging my clients a fee for every time they say "Minority Report" to me. I’m a commercial artist in L.A., and 90% of commercial art is shutting up and giving the client what they want. That means I spend a lot of time trying to repackage Steven Spielberg’s vision of the future: floating graphical windows with video hovering in them, typography flickering and animating in response to actors’ actions, interfaces appearing and disappearing when fingers reach out to poke them. In short, building a virtual iPad interface, hovering in front of the actor using it. In Spielberg's future, you only have to twirl your fingers at a computer screen to make it do what you want. It looks cool enough, but it's time for us to let it go: we've built our graphics and our electronics around interface eye candy, rather than trying to come up with new and more effective ways to control our real and imaginary gadgets. The best thing you can say about touchscreens are they look good on camera and they’re better than T9 texting, which is kind of like being better than fax machines.

That's because people looked at the eye candy rather than what it was solving behind the scenes.  And the fact that it was trying to be created without the backing technology.  If you can use a gesture based interface with the technology to back it up, then it wouldn't just be eye candy, IMO.

Well part of the eye-candy / tech is the physical muscle strain issues. Rumor has it Tom Cruise needed to rest every 10 minutes in between shoots because of arm fatigue. I do think guestures will supplement computing alongside the keyboard and mouse and even speech, but the articles are saying it's like some of the current granularity problems we see just with touch screens, let alone 3d spacing. Gloves are the long running dark horse choice for gestures. My interest runs along the lines of precisely what will be faster with gloves that can't yet be done on *some kind* of keyboard, even if it's not an ordinary querty - some kind of symbolic language comes to mind.

Touch screens better than T9 texting? That made me almost laugh - but instead I just snorted cynically.

Anyway, me asking a guy at the office if he had preordered the Leap Motion ended up with his preorder increasing to 5 units :-[, so... going to be funny to see whether that's just going to end up as an expensive dust-gathering toy :P

If you are strong in the Force, you can reach into a video chat and choke the person the way Darth Vader did in the original Star Wars movie.

I think touchscreen designers may have it backwards. I think a screen that can touch you would have much greater market potential than a screen that you can touch.

The opportunity for a renaissance in the porn industry alone would be worth billions...
