need to create a basic floor plan
« on: December 01, 2012, 10:19 AM »
I am looking to create a very basic floor plan of our school to use as a "map" of the rooms.  All I think that I need is something that will allow me to create a square, rectangle, and lines.  Also an eraser and to put in text.  I have tried Dia, Sketchup 8, but they are too complicated or too quirky for me, :(  Draft IT won't run on my W7 box.  an online solution would also work.  Something free would be nice.

any suggestions?

Not sure if this is also too complicated, I have used it and actually don't like it that much but ...

I have also tried using Excel, floorplanner, and am currently on smart draw which isn't free but is about as close to what I want that I have found.  I also looked at tigercad but it had some quirks that I couldn't get past.

FWIW Sweet Home is 2D, don't let the name fool you, but like I said I didn't find intuitive or all that good

Me neither rgdot.  And I am still looking. I think one of my schools has an old copy of solid works that I may see if I can find.  Figuring an older version might be simpler to use.

so this morning I went looking for a drawing tool and after several attempts I found this one.  Here, which wasn't really designed for how I am using it.  But it fits the needs perfectly and was quick and easy!   :) :Thmbsup: 8)

and it only took me 10 minutes to do it!  Now that's what I am talking about.  I am attaching my project which is very basic and doesn't need dimensions or doors or anything like that.    :D

This project is still a work in progress as I have several more buildings to add.

Hey, that's a pretty nifty Schematic app there.  I've used PCB123 for schematics before, but the output is weird when running through Wine on Linux.
I'll give this one a try.  :Thmbsup:

Dunno if of benefit, but Make Use Of recently mentioned a Website, FloorStyler, that might be worth a look.  And there's a list of eight (8 ) floor/house/deck designers in the You may also like - section toward the bottom of the Make Use Of page.

@dojibear:
+1 from me for that.
icovia was the best I came across a while back. Only trouble for me was that it's in Imperial measures (feet/inches) - it doesn't seem to do metric units.    :(
I don't want to have to measure everything up again, but in feet/inches this time.
