Looking for a good file transfer app
« on: April 11, 2006, 08:41 AM »
Hello, I need to send some big files to a friend. File hosts like rapidshare.. are so slooowww and require uploading. Is there any ip-based prog that make my pc a server he can connect to and get files ? something like a RAT but without other nasty functions.
 Thanks.

Take a look at https://www.foldershare.com/

It's free and your PC acts like a server if I'm not mistaken. Not sure how fast it is.

It was a paid service up till recently until it was acquired by Microsoft.

Here's a little more information about it from PCMag UK

http://www.pcmag.co..../2043718/foldershare

Please note that the service is now free as of Nov 2005 (Microsoft acquired it)

A few years back, Nullsoft (makers of WinAmp) released an excellent P2P application for exchanging files among an explicitly defined group of trusted friends/peers -- and it worked amazingly well.  AOL forced them to kill it after only a couple of days . . .

Fortunately, anything worth trying to remove is usually picked up by the open source community -- Waste is no exception.

Foldershare is just what I need. I also found another : CC file transfer. Now I'll test their speed.
WASTE seems a good idea , I'll try it when I have a bigger group.
 Thanks.

The biggest advantage to waste is its security -- folder share is probably a simpler solution.

Allen, why did AOL force them to kill it?  It looks awfully good as Waste.  Just curious, very curious!

The whole "file sharing" thing was really hitting the fan, it was right around or right after Napster was getting shut down, if I recall correctly.  AOL, owning Nullsoft, didn't want to be associated with a program potentially used to "illegally" transfer files -- at least, that's my best guess.  At the time, with the whole Piracy thing being -the- issue, AOL didn't want to be mis-perceived as a supporter of the stolen arts.  It's dumb, I mean it's not like it's a mass-user file finding device -- it's for transferring among close friends.  But file-sharers were being witch-hunted, so . . .

Got it...I remember the time when it was "hitting the fan" very well!  So cautious they ditched a great thing.  That can happen!

Not to be disagreeing with anyone but I read a different version of WASTE's story in the uk PC Format magazine. According to them WASTE's release as an opensource projects was unsanctioned move by one (the only one?) of the original WinAMP authors to try and regain some of the community credibility he lost when Nullsoft sold out to AOL.

AOL tried to undo the damage but were too late 8) .

Most of it sounds about right, being an unsanctioned attempt to regain credibility -- but I don't remember any mention of open source when it released.  Furthermore, the official blurb you posted would lead one to think otherwise.  Who really knows, other than the developer?

The good news is it's open source and highly competent now :)
