I have a real liking for a forum that is great if you're moving - there's a forum for each state, and for the UK, Canada, Mexico and "World," and I've found it can be really helpful if you have questions about a certain area of the country.  You'll find rubbish type posts occasionally; you'll find that absolutely everywhere.  But generally, they are very good.  And what I like even more is the general forums...you can find a place to discuss almost anything you want there, there are so many different headings, and I enjoy reading there very much.  Books, politics, relationships, movies, finance, mortgages, etc., etc.  http://www.city-data.com/forum/  The key to its success seems to be the fact that there is a lot of participation.

I actually use wireless headphones for my work right now called TV Listener.  Yes, years ago there was a commercial for them on TV.  But they aren't just for television, but any audio device.  They are excellent!  I love them.  They come with a volume adjuster right on them and run on batteries, of course.  You do have to have the transmitter thingy in the right place, though.

Did you know if you import your address book every single contact gets an email from Google with multiple Google ads (without telling you). A friend of mine just did this and came in for some serious abuse from a forum we both belong to.

Thanks a lot, rjbull.  Such a detailed post, I really appreciate it.  I went to the VDE link and got totally absorbed in it, and while I was clicking links here and there for the "other" DOS utilities, I came across the Shorthand for Windows third-party utility page which mentions that Tame allows Shorthand to work in DOS programs.  Wow, was I surprised!  As I think you know, I'm pretty intimately knowledgeable about the Shorthand abbreviation expander (in a lot of respects), but I didn't know that!  I immediately put that on my board and I'll have to try it out myself. 

Having finished with that tangent unrelated to your post, VDE looks pretty interesting.  Thanks for all the info.

I just wanted to say that recently, I saw the program Email Avenger on Renegade's site after reading about another of his programs here.  I haven't tried it yet, but I have it bookmarked on my computer (and in my brain), for certain.  Because I will be trying it when the need next arises.  About a month ago, I was testing for a job.  Everything was going hunky-dory as I communited back and forth through email with the tester.  Towards the most crucial point, what do you think happened?  Email down.  I can't tell you the problems this caused.  It was horrible!  (On top of that, my cell phone picked that time to act up, as in dropping calls, etc.)  Oh, boy!   

So, just another thanks to Donation Coder for making me aware of something valuable!  And to Renegade, of course!

rjbull, would you mind giving examples of how you use ClipText?  (Some diehard WordPerfect DOS users might be interested).  I looked at the whole site (nice) and from what I see, it's not quite a program to make copying between Windows and DOS apps as easy as Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V, correct?

Wow!  I'm really appreciative of these sites, especially http://www.lvsonline.com/  Thanks so much!  I wish, oh how I wish, they had one for VBA programming.  I would sign up in a New York second.  But they have some others I might definitely want to sign up for.  It's wonderful to have these sorts of sites recommended, because when you look for "classes," I, at least, am mostly left wondering if they are going to really be any good or not. 

I love DC!  This is exciting.

ActiveWords ($49.95 USD ) looks like a combination of parts of DC's FARR and AutoHotkey to me. It seems to aim at more novice PC users, right?

Hi, brother.  I don't know that it aims at novice users so much as just the average person out there who wants a tool to automate a lot of tasks.  It can do some things AHK can do, (but AHK is ten times more powerful and can do so much more), but the scripting in AW is so different.  The way I always say it, if you know keyboard shortcuts, you'll have no problem with ActiveWords.  The more advanced type scripts are fairly easy to figure out, too.  Although, there are some AW gurus who just boggle the mind.  They really take it to its max.  So if you mean novice in the sense of someone who knows nothing about programming languages, then I would agree with your statement.  I am actually only average with it, but I do feel I am "competent" when using ActiveWords.  With AHK....wow, we better not go there.  I'm better than I was but still in the "most pitiful" range.

I might not be understanding completely what you want, but it seems more of an Auto Complete type function.  I recall that someone on this forum mentioned the free Let Me Type - and I believe it lets you import lists of words, too.  Here was the DC thread 

What also comes to mind is Slave    This is a program I found at the AHK forums.  You can see some screenshots right in that post.  I thought it was quite, quite neat.  You may want to try it.

Another one you could try with a free trial, but not cheap otherwise, is Shorthand for Windows.  This is also an excellent expander many MTs use.  It's not really an auto completer, but when you use the suggestion window feature, it might as well be one.  You can also do Tcl scripts with it.  This was my first loved professional "visual" expander.  I no longer use it, but think very highly of it.  Very.  The hint window is the other option, only you must put in all the letters of the abbreviation for that to show you the word or phrase.  That's why the suggestion window is so, so much better  (to me).  Here's a link

Speaking of having a hard time remembering a slew of hot keys, that is one reason I very much like and use the program ActiveWords.   (Yeah, I use several programs simultaneously - Instant Text, ActiveWords, AHK!)  The neat thing about ActiveWords is that you give your scripts intuitive words and then hit your trigger key, which can be one of the F keys, one you assign, or double spacebar.  Double spacebar works out very nicely for me.  Anyway, I use it for all sorts of things, including some of my Word macros.  I have many, many of those, too, and eventually, you need to start giving them bizarre shortcut keys in order to not conflict with any other important or oft-used shortcut keys.  So I give them the bizarre shortcuts, but use ActiveWords to call them.  For instance, a macro to fix all hyphens to nonbreaking hyphens is called with just typing "hyp" and double spacebar. 

I'd love to do a review of ActiveWords some time soon!

Swiped this from another forum and had to share, because it's very cool.  Go to UV Art and click on "Portfolio."  Then, be certain to drag the slider bar, because the art changes when you do so.  I thought many were very nice.

The attitude expressed there is beyond me.  All I can think is that they didn't really look around here. 

This is one great place, and I haven't even utilized it 20%.  It's one of the most interactive forums I've seen.  That is so important to me.  You get a really good idea of what a software program does, or how something works, or what program in a category you personally would like best, when you have so much informative posting going back and forth.  The reviews are fantastic.  The contests and other interactivity are fantastic.  Most of all, the programmers giving of themselves is fantastic.  And the very savvy here don't seem to have an "elitist" attitude, either.  There are great programs offered here.  To me, it was totally natural to want to donate.  All I had to do was take a look around first to figure that out.  And so if you don't want to donate, big deal, you get reminders.  So what.  You get that with lots of trial software.  You register.  And of all the looking I've done around here, I haven't seen any members who feel they were ripped.  To the contrary, the very good stuff is promoted here.  I'm not the tech "really savvy" types you all are, but I know what's good and what's high-quality when I see it.  Donation Coder rocks.

Hi, rjbull.

Several reasons.  As you must have seen I run a board heavily leaning toward MTs (but not totally, anyone, including you all, are so welcome there).  http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/    In fact, I'm trying to get more non-MTs there, but it's difficult.  I made the huge mistake of getting put on the LangaList for this purpose, but if I'd had half a brain, I'd have realized putting forums on that list isn't a good idea.  All it has brought me is spammers, who had never found the place before.  Well, I digress.  Anyway, there are just a few main expanders that most MTs use, but not completely.  Some do use others.  Then, there are MTs still in the student phase, who generally have not used one of the major expanders yet.  I'm interested in offering as much as I can there and discovering as many tools for our trade as possible, to share with everyone else, and vice versa.  I think we are way too tunnel-visioned in general.  Since starting the board, I have found through others AHK and ActiveWords, and I now consider these two programs indispensable.  Another good reason for this script is that a lot of MTs work on company computers where they can't download anything, and you can run AHK on a USB stick.  And some people won't spend the money or don't have it for certain expanders.  I'd seen where there were good scripts already made in AHK, but none that were exactly geared towards what we need, that including the tooltips.  I think jgpaiva has proven what a powerful tool this can be!  I sure drooled to see this done, too, but could never even begin to understand how to make it.  It wouldn't be possible.  That's one of the main reasons this forum appealed to be so much and why I joined - that you could ask for snacks!  There are so many exciting tools available out there, and I'm interested in all of them. 

If you found ABCZ you found a jewel.  It so cuts down on remembering, it's not even funny.  Must be at least five years ago now that I first started using it.  I used Shorthand then and ordered the ABCZ files.  Wow!  I'd never realized how much I was cheating myself.  Now, I use that method almost all the time for my abbreviations that I add.  The two-word rule of first two letters of each word is truly superb.  You could have me talking forever about it.  LOL.  Other rules of ABCZ are awesome, too.  I still don't think I could get along very well without a visual expander, though.  Not when you have thousands of entries.  But many MTs do!

I've used Lil Red Notebook before.  Mostly for medical terms to reference when I needed to.  I do think there are better programs, though.  I suggest trying mouser's PopUp Wisdom for remembering your rarer shorts.  Tell me what you think! 

Yes, I personally could never leave Instant Text.  It's too powerful and good.  But it's like other very good programs, there are competing apps that others find better for them.  I guess I like being a small (very small) part of finding them.

PS:  By the way, on my home page I've had a link to DC for awhile now.  I love this place!  I'm only sorry I haven't been able to spend much time here lately, (or at my own place, for that matter), because of a new job.  It exhausts me, LOL!
