I hate ads and have been using this ad killer for years now. Yeah, I know; Ad blocker for Firefox is free and works well but Ad Muncher works globally (not FF-specific). What's more, author is unusually responsive answering support questions and that's half the value in software.

Is there a strong reason to go with the Premium license over the basic license? As I understand it, the only real difference is premium gets daily list updates while basic gets the block list updated once a week. Is there enough of an arms race in ads vs. ad blockers that I'd notice a major difference in browsing experience?

It not working is the exception rather than the rule. For instance, it still doesn't filter encrypted (https) sites, there's a particular ad on my excite.com portal that it can't handle, and a very few scattered others. Configuring "My Filters" for non-browser applications is a bit tricky but author always seemed committed to help in all support issues I've raised.

I've used it for more than a year now and am very satisfied with it. As the Rambler said, it is not without the occasional fault but for the most part it works very well. Not only in Firefox but all browsers I have installed (IE9, Chrome, and Opera), as well as FeedDemon and other apps that use the IE browser internally.

The latest version has a new feature that kinda sucks - no more context menu item for Ad Muncher but instead a drop-down toolbar that does not have all the same functionality that the menu had. I don’t like it much but they say it will improve. The reason for it is that the constant browser updates (read: Chrome and Firefox) tended to break many extensions, requiring a lot of upkeep. This toolbar overcomes that problem according to the developer. Makes sense as long as they can make the damn thing at least as functional as the context menu was.

BTW, I purchased AM as a Pro license - I believe on Bits - and soon thereafter upgraded it to a lifetime license. That should speak somewhat to my confidence in it.

The two points I could see are that you keep your filter rules in one place for all your browsers (and browser-like applications), and that it appears many people think this is faster than the browser extensions (which many claim slow down some of the browsers considerably).

I only use 1 browser. The rare cases where I need to use another are not the cases where I need an ad blocker. (Although the filter list in my secondary browser is the same as in Firefox.)

In that case, perhaps your previous post should read, "I can't see a reason for me to prefer this to decent Adblock browser extensions."

It has worked quite well so far, but I had one issue with it -- since it does not filter https connections, facebook is now full of adds. Thankfully I don't use facebook much.

i wonder what their new technologies are. they said they would never address https, and a lot of google's stuff is going that way. No big deal, but it makes the value of AM a little less. What could they improve to make up for something like that? curious...

Well, one "new technology" that I don’t like much is that they have done away with Ad Muncher items in the context menus (right-click) and instead use an appearing/vanishing toolbar. When you want to block something, or allow a pop-up you must press Ctrl+Right Click to cause the AM toolbar to drop-down from the top of the page. But it doesn’t have all the selections that their context menu/submenu used to have. Also, the tray icon context menu has no more items that affect ads. Their reasoning is that the browser updates are coming too fast and furious to keep up with the add-ons coding - especially the frequency of the Chrome and Firefox updates now. Which seems reasonable I guess. But I do miss the context menus.

Additionally when a pop-up occurs and is blocked, if you want to allow it you have to be fast. The toolbar appears very briefly and you have to click it to allow the pop-up. If you don’t catch it before it vanishes you can't allow the pop-up. I miss the damn thing most of the time!
