DonationCoder Poker Tournament is Scheduled!
« on: July 08, 2012, 10:27 AM »
I'm thinking tentatively that the DC Tournament will be held on August 11th, Saturday, at 1pm Eastern Time.

It will be Texas Hold 'Em, probably "pot limit".
Obviously there will be no real money involved. Everyone will start with 20,000 chips.  It costs nothing to enter so why not?

At the end of the tournament the winner will get some real world prize: A custom DC mug or shirt designating them as the winner of the 1st annual DC Poker Tournament, and maybe some bonus prizes (some board games?) -- and of course, bragging rights.

I think we should try to link to a few tutorials and places people can learn how to play.  You don't want your first time learning how to play to be in the tournament.

Maybe what we can do is run some practice tournaments on Saturdays at 1pm EST leading up to the real one, so people can get the hang of how the client works, and so we can work out any hiccups.

Install the client from www.pokerstars.net and join the DonationCoder club by following the instructions stephen provides below, and practice getting used to the client.  Use your donationcoder member name (or dcMEMBERNAME) so we can recognize each other.

I used to be pretty good at poker. Not so much anymore, but I still enjoy playing it. If we can get enough people, Im in.

Americans and people who don't want to be gambling real money are directed by the site to download the software from:

When you install it, choose custom install and uncheck the Internet Explorer toolbar button.

That looks like it might be good software for us to use.

BUT Americans and people who don't want to be gambling real money are directed by the site to download the software from:

When you install it, choose custom install and uncheck the Internet Explorer toolbar button.

Don't want to/cant because Online Gambling is banned in America

It should be said that while pokerstars is a legit site, there is a high chance you will receive gambling spam at the email you sign up with, so use an email address that you don't mind getting spam at (and if you don't have such an email address, time to get one).

Slightly off topic, Mouser is right, though officially "opt-in" email is NOT spam because you have requested a relationship with the company involved. So I definitely recommend this practice, and I have had one for years because everyone from online games to Radio Shack wants to pummel you with the mail.

There may be multiple annual poker tournament mugs, but only one FIRST ANNUAL poker tournament mug.
