Somebody on the Steam forums asked if they should buy Diablo 3 or Torchlight 2. This is their question and my response:
I've never played a Diablo game in my life (gasp) and the new game seems to be a success, so hey, why not try out the latest title in one of the most popular PC franchises of all time?
However, I've put 70 hours on the original Torchlight...liked everything about it, but got boring for me.
It's summer and I would like to spend some time outdoors, so I only have room for one game.
T2 or D3?
Cliffs:
- Never played Diablo
- Really liked Torchlight
- Don't want to buy both

5 Reasons Torchlight 2 is a Better Bang for your Buck than Diablo 3I'd like to reiterate
the points that Simian_ made, including the fact that you can actually get a 4-pack of Torchlight 2 (which comes with 4 copies of Torchlight 1) so you and 3 friends can enjoy playing together, for the same price as Diablo 3.
I played the beta of Diablo 3 and while I enjoyed it, it was different enough from Diablo 2 to make me wonder how fun it would be in the long term. I'm talking mostly about character/skill progression. It felt too limited to me. Too controlling of what skills I would use, when I would use them, and how powerful they would be. As I said: I enjoyed playing the Diablo 3 beta but it made me wonder how much I'd enjoy it in a full playthrough.
I've also played the beta of Torchlight 2, and I really, really like it.
To be honest, I didn't really enjoy Torchlight 1. I just couldn't get into it because of the lack of multiplayer. The hacking and slashing and acquisition of shiny new loot didn't appeal to me if I couldn't share the experiences and show off my cool new equipment with my friends. But Torchlight 2 fixes that, and also fixes some of my other big complaints about TL1--such as the game pausing and making you click a dialog box (in the middle of a boss fight, for example) so you can acknowledge that your pet returned from town with some money. That, to me, was totally unnecessary and immersion breaking. It completely interrupted the flow of gameplay. But that's been fixed in TL2.
Anyway, in my opinion, TL2 is much more like Diablo 2 in terms of gameplay and fun (which is a good thing!) than Diablo 3 is. Having been a fan of the Diablo series and not really being a fan of Torchlight 1, I would recommend to my friends to go for TL2 over Diablo 3 if they had to choose.
