After uTorrent launched their Plus program, the entire UI is getting messier and messier, and it seems that they just want to push Plus on to you at every opportunity. As such, I have decided to look for something else. Anyone here has got a great uTorrent alternative?

I don't need any plugins or whizz-bang features; anything that is lightweight and downloads torrents is fine. I have found qBittorrent, which looks like what I want, but I was wondering if you guys have anything else that you may be using.

How about using Utorrent Free, the no-whizz-bang alternative?

That is what I am using (right now, anyway), but I feel like I am using a trial version of something, what with all the buttons for Plus features and constant reminders about how you should upgrade :/

I'm surprised. I'm using their latest stable version (3.1.2 build 26746) and can't see a single plus button or nag. Just uninstall what you have and download the latest stable release from their site.

[Edit: I see they've moved on to build 26773, I'm updating now... will post back if it's gone rogue.

Updated, can't see any plus buttons here either... ]

Transmission BT? I guess they have windows version as well. I tried that on elementary (and ubuntu).

(a) keep an older version of uTorrent around, from the time when it was still really good. That's what I do :-)

(b) qTorrent?

Using µTorrent 1.8.2 here simply because private trackers prefer those earlier builds and it works.

Im using uTorrent 3.1.2 build 26773 and the only ad for the plus version I see is a small box in the lower left corner. The previous few versions have been the same way.

eMule? BitTorrent is a dead concept, made with centralized trackers in mind which has been proven a very bad design idea.
If you desperately need BitTorrent for whatever, I'd recommend Deluge, but it crashes for me.

1.8.3 was a good version and still works fine on Windows 7 x86 and x64

One website I am registered with has banned version 3 because it doesn't track usage properly.

You can disable all the nagging around the UI. My version looks almost exactly like 2.x

I would personally recommend Halite, if Eóin still kept working on it. As it is today, it is at a disadvantage because it doesn't support as many features as the others. Plus, it looks pretty snazzy. The competition tries its utmost to be the ugliest option available. At least we're still much better off than a couple of years ago, when both Mac and Linux roundkicked Windows' ass when it came to the number of options available. Now they just simply kick its ass.

Indeed, DHT seems to be faster locating peers than most trackers. A torrent directory is not the same thing as a tracker, though

. ed2k and KAD still have the upper hand when it comes to decentralization, but they're working on solving that for BitTorrent. Are both networks still having enough activity, anyway?

eD2K has been slowly dying since they added Kademlia, back in version 0.40 which is quite a while now. Kademlia is alive, well and kicking.

You can download torrents with wget, just need to handle them with a BT client then.

From my experience, qBittorrent doesn't handle Unicode file names very well.

The best way to download torrents is with Tixati. Not only is it a great and fast torrent client, but it's also a fun place to hang out, chat, search and share with others.

I'm using Tixati right now. The UI lacks a bit of responsiveness but in general this software gets the job done.

Another vote for Tixati. UI shows what I want to see. Easy controls. Been using it for about a year without an issue.
