Our own "private" social network
« on: December 03, 2011, 12:40 PM »
With some friends, I am thinking about setting up a social network site (thus weaning people away from FB etc.) and for the moment am looking at Elgg. It seems to be the most promising, has many plugins and a thriving community, also it's open source and doesn't seem too complicated (I do have quite some experience with Drupal - would you believe).

But I' d like to hear from DC'ers with other ideas and suggestions.

Thanks.

I would suggest considering BuddyPress, that would be my first consideration but of course it depends on your requirements, expectations and the Drupal familiarity which in my opinion makes some averse to WordPress based stuff  ;)

Dolphin is one of my favorite social network scripts.  Very easy to install, and LOADS of addons for it :)

Dolphin is the only "all-in-one" bundle of PHP community scripts, Flash plugins, Adobe AIR and Mobile apps that provide full control, freedom and flexibility. Thanks for the heads up on BuddyPress.  It looks pretty cool, and I think I'm actually going to try that one.

It is possible to use noserub and diaspora on your own domain and restricted to the people who wants to use it.
