XP computer, widescreen options

Here's a newbie type question   

Have an old XP Dell Dimension 8400 that's humming along for now. Want to use it with a new cheaper monitor, most of the cheaper ones on newegg and other places are listed 1366/768 (1.77) or 1440/900 (1.6). The resolutions available (see screenshot for Radeon specs) are 1280/1024 (1.25) - 1280/800 (1.6) - 1280/768 (1.66) - 1280/720 (1.77) - 1152/864 (1.33) - 1024/768 (1.33) - 800/600 (1.33)

If I can avoid it I don't want to spend anymore for this pc even if it is possible (is it even?) to get a new compatible card.
So with one of those cheaper monitors I will be stuck with using the one or two resolutions that match the ratio or am I off?

Doesn't the drivers force the card into the right resolution? Wouldn't expect that to be a hardware limitation, though it's not impossible.

You wouldn't, but it is - Older cards just wont do the 16:9 stuff. But IIRC he should be ok with the X300

Hm, found this page on a HP server stating some limitations on resolution

Working here with 1440x900 Acer and 1280x1024 Samsung monitor. Both are connected to one ATI Radeon 9600 (old!!!) and its latest driver (also old!!!) humming along just fine on the mentioned resolutions.

I think you can take the gamble.

Thanks guys, I'll probably buy from a brick and mortar place to run back and return it if it doesn't work out for whatever reason.
