New Color Picker / Color Selector application released
« on: March 14, 2006, 12:08 PM »
Just wanted to let the group know that I released a new version of a popular color picker application (Pixeur).  I redesigned the interface to include a color selector since I found myself requiring this alot.

Its being released as donationware but includes no ads, nags, feature limits, or registration code.  Basically after you install it you have the full and complete version.

I would love to get some feedback on features that you would like added.

(one thing that has been added and not released yet is allowing the user to type HEX codes in and change the selected color.  Also, I'm thinking of adding an Import / Export color history feature).

Pixeur:

(I'm going to be heading out for a bit but will reply to all when I get back)

cool.
im not sure if this is what you meant, and i hadn't thought of color history idea but actually having a table of previously selected colors (ie a list of colorcode and color) would be incredibly useful.

Pixeur already includes a color history but I did not provide a method to save or recall it - this is what I will include in the next version...

This may not fall into the scope of this program, but what about a color coordinator?  I've seen various ones for website design... the features already in place are handy, but having some additional features for picking a scheme would be pretty cool.

I thought of that and it may be something for v3.0.  Its would be simple enough to calculate a color scheme but being color-blind the testing would be murder for me.

Thanx for the suggestion.

Veign,

I tried out Pixeur and it seems very well done!  I think the hex input feature would be a great idea.  Also, I think a some type of "magnifying glass" functionality could come in handy when picking colors.

Works great.  I agree that a manification option as well as a free hand hex-entry would be great features.  Also, I think that a killer feature would be the ability to load/save different palettes -- Could associate palettes with different websites and such for easy recall.

it looks neat but i'm still playing around with it... btw, how about a 'green' version? you can put in just the exe minus the setup.

You may want to download the latest version that I just uploaded (v2.5).

Whats New:
- Color History can be exported and imported.
- HEX codes can now be changed and affect the selected color
- Double-clicking the color in the history changes selected color

I may add some default color palettes but thats tough since I'm colorblind - feel free to submit some to me via email and I will consider adding a Palette Folder on the install in a future version.  Also, will look into the magnifying glass too

Enjoy and please keep submitting feedback - this is what makes it better...,

I have given more thought to a color scheme and I will probably add something that gives you the complimentary colors of a selected colors.  I have a source that talks about calculating this so I will just have to implement and figure out how to add into the interface.

What I'm thinking is adding a intellisense type drop down that will appear when hovered over a color in the color history...

just saw the older screenshot at zaine's site and realized i should have tried the program before posting.  new version looks even better.

sw_ss_pixeur.gif

what caught my eye is that the history idea you implemented is exactly what i was hoping for and what is missing from the color tool i currently use (colorcop).  the quick copy-to-clipboard link is also a nice timesaver.
great work, i'm switching to pixeur!

one request:
make the history automatically save and reload (or at least an option for it to do so), so that it is preserved across runs.

Interesting idea with preserving the history.  I will add a Save History on Exit option to the hisotry's drop-down...

I have added the Auto Save History on Exit option to the color history's right-click menu.  I am holding off on releasing to see if any new suggestions come or bugs.  I may also try to get a very basic color scheme window added to get a feel for how users would like to see it in the application.

I should be releasing this version sometime this week.  If you want a preview copy Mouser just email me....

I think an easy way to handle the schemes would just a be a dropdown menu above the history box -- where there's a default, "history" scheme and then any other schemes that have been added.  Selecting a scheme, obviously, changes what colors are shown in what is currently the history area.  Add "new" and "edit" buttons by or under.  In the edit section, include an editable name field and the ability to delete colors.  I suppose there would also need to be a button to add new colors to the active palette :)

Thanx for the suggestions.  Gives me a lot to think about.  I like the idea of some sort of drop-down the history that lets you change the color scheme...

Would there be a way to show at least the first few colors of the scheme?  Especially if it's a history, it would be easier to choose which one.  Names are helpful too... maybe both would help.

Just released a new release that fixes some minor issues and I went ahead and added a basic color scheme component.  The color scheme component can be launched in the main window and change as any color is selected or be launched as a remote window per a selected color (it locks into that color scheme so you could float over a design)...

Downloaded it a few days ago, couldn't figure out how to access the new features . . . I guess uninstalling and re-installing might work better than reparing :)  The color scheme component is really cool -- a similar implementation for custom palettes would be great.

One little nitpick -- the top of the "Color Scheme" text is visible in the window though the color scheme widget is collapsed.

The color scheme will be worked on and re-worked based on user input for the 3.0 release.  Also, will be looking into a magnifier and possibly adding a mini-mode where the application can be shrunk down to its most basic and useful functions in a smaller footprint...
