SoftMaker Office Standard 2012 is now available, too, and we are also offering upgrades to it.
Great!  This is what I've been waiting for.  I love Office Standard 2010, and now I'll upgrade to 2012.

1. Introductory prices for SoftMaker Office 2012 will expire on Dec 31
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The introductory price for upgrades to SoftMaker Office 2012 for Windows
expires at the end of the year:

* An upgrade to SoftMaker Office Professional 2012 is still available at
EUR 49.95 / US$ 59.95. On January 1, the price rises by 10 Euro.

* You can also still purchase the upgrade to SoftMaker Office Standard
at just EUR 32.95 / US$ 34.95. On January 1, the price rises to 39.95.

This is a good opportunity to switch to the most full-featured SoftMaker
Office ever released at a great price!

2. Service pack 654 for SoftMaker Office 2012 for Windows
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shortly before the holidays, we released service pack 654 for SoftMaker
Office 2012 for Windows.

If you have not installed it yet, you should do it right now. This
service pack introduces some bug fixes, but also adds new features.

Thanks for the heads up .

I kind of wish they'd offer a Danish localized version of SO, but the market probably isn't big enough to cover the cost.

I know English well enough to be able to live with the English UI, but I noticed today that unlike the rest of SO, the e-mail client doesn't include Danish spellchecking :(. I guess maybe that might get added later on.

Anyway, nice that they gave fair warning when the discount ends.

-I expect you to be right, when you say Danish may be added later on. However, eM Client is both new to SoftMaker, and a BIG program, so I wouldn't be too disappointed if it takes a while or a year...

I am surprised so much eM Client can do!

For the records:

I want to leave LibO for a while, I want to try if I could live without some of its annoyances (including its slowness). Now I have been on OOo/LibO since OOo m580 or what the first "prerelease" was, so most of my "important" files are in .odt and .ods. Ironically, choosing these open formats leave me quite unable to switch at all, as none of the concurring products are able to handle OpenDocument nearly as perfect. While .odt is beginning to spread, .ods is still too exotic, as it seems. I had a lot of fun trying to open my shoppinglist.ods file in Gnumeric, for example, which natively supports .ods but was overburdened by cell borders, dynamic formatting and multiple pages. So I had dropped the urge for .ods support, but still most applications failed. SoftMaker 2012 even failed to display a simple, multi-page prose .odt file correctly, wtf?

So I'm on WordPerfect Office X5 now. Yay.

SoftMaker eM Client (a component of SoftMaker Office Professional)

Contemporaneously with the release of this service pack, SoftMaker eM Client Professional is being updated to version 4.0. This new release offers completely rewritten access to Google Calendar (including Google Tasks for the first time) and is able to import PST files directly, without Microsoft Outlook installed.

To update SoftMaker eM Client, use the Help > Check for Updates command.

Version 3 didn't live for long.

 I have been using Softmaker Office since 2008 version and I love the software. It's fast and feature rich, the addition of eM client with 2012 Professional edition was a great move!

I use eM client V4.x exclusively for email, and haven't had any problems with it. No software is perfect, but I must say I don't regret switching to Softmaker Office and ditching MS Office.

Just my opinion, I realize your's may vary...

I too have been very pleased with SoftMaker Office, which I've been using since the 2010 edition.  Unlike dvally, I opted for the Standard version, which doesn't have the email client but is less expensive.  I took advantage of a special offer and wound up paying about $25 for the entire suite.  I've never regretted moving from MS Office to SoftMaker.

+1! It's a great alternative to MS Office - and also Libre/Open Office if you use Linux. Always nice to have the exact same software available for both Linux and Windows. When I need a full wordprocessor, I prefer to use TextMaker. Especially since I never did like that miserable 'ribbon' interface in MS Word.

Curt, thanks VERY much for posting this!  I haven't yet received this message, but I'm very excited to know that TextMaker will now read WordPerfect files.  Until now, I had to read such files on an old computer that had WordPerfect installed.  I'm pretty basic in my use of PlanMaker, but some of those changes may be useful as well.

I hadn't heard of that one - sounds roughly like the previous version

SoftMaker eM Client 5
« Reply #97 on: January 19, 2013, 02:13 PM »
The road from eM Client 3.5 to version 5 has not been long, but is at least a free upgrade.

SoftMaker eM Client Professional 5
E-mails, tasks, events, and contacts...

SoftMaker eM Client Professional 5, which is part of SoftMaker Office Professional 2012, competently manages your e-mails, events, tasks, and contacts:

Its powerful e-mail module lets you receive, create, and manage e-mail messages.

Tasks and events are taken care of by SoftMaker eM Client Professional, too. You can keep them locally on your PC, but you can also connect to calendars of friends and colleagues over the Internet.

SoftMaker eM Client Professional stores your personal and business contacts on your PC, but also synchronizes them over the Internet.

The built-in chat program lets you stay in touch with your friends, regardless of whether they use MSN, ICQ, Google Chat, or Facebook Chat.
-SoftMaker

By the way, eM is made in USA, even though SoftMaker is  German:

I see. So, basically, switching from LibreOffice would not make much sense. Damn.

I've used both.

SoftMaker has more of an MS Office 2003 feel to it. Libre is Libre and not overly concerned about being quite so close to the MS Office experience as SoftMaker seems to be.

Functionally they're equivalent to each other although SoftMaker feels lighter on some PCs. However, with the advent of Libre v4 that may change since they're finally cutting out the Java nonsense previous versions were saddled with.

If you're happy with Libre there's really no major reason to switch unless you're curious or like to try new software. That said, SoftMaker puts out a fine product - so it might be worth a try just to see if you like it more.
