It's 1979. An 8 year old boy who thinks Abba, Boney M and some cutesy pop songs comprise the world's entire music collection is being looked after by a teenaged friend. The teen drags the kid along to a friends house. It's night, the house lights are switched off and a bunch of kids are dancing to blaring music that sounds completely alien to the kid. It's nothing like he's ever heard before, it's the best f***ing thing he's ever heard and he realizes how COOL, cool can be. What he doesn't realize is he's just had his first taste of electronic music - the man behind the music, 30 years ahead of his time... an Italian, Giorgio Moroder. Decades later, very few know him... (the man is now 70 and he looked like a mustache pete even in his prime) but very few have escaped the music he influenced... from fly-by-night electropop bands to giants like The Chemical Bros.

if you like early Jarre, you might like 70/80's Vangelis, earlier Tangerine Dream, erm what else; you'll probably get people recommending Tomita and others - but i wouldn't bother with them.

I liked his Equinoxe one too, especially tracks 4 & 1

I ended up listening to Computer World from Kraftwerk (1981) (the linked video including Kraftwerk puppets & something called 'Commodore 64 basic v2'

& lots of other stuff) and Kraftwerk - Metropolis which was earlier again I think... oooh, and Kraftwerk - Neon Lights

Have a listen to Manuel Göttsching's E2-E4 from about 1980ish.

Not only is it a great house record from 5 years before anyone had invented house, not only did it form the basis of the Balearic Beat sound a decade later, not only did act as midwife for sampletastic stuff like Sueno Latino, but most importantly of all: if I start it playing it as I get on the train to work, it'll just be finishing an hour later as we slow down on the final approach into Victoria - perfect

If you want a real trip into the odd and before his time stuff, Jarre did an album back in 1972 (Deserted Palace) that you can no longer purchase, that will take you on a trip to the land of game music, long before the days of video games.

If she is doing the decorating herself, give her a computer that refuses to connect to the internet, loaded with all the geeky software you can get your hands on.

At least that's what my dad did to me and it worked. I don't even paint my nails any more, nevermind doing designs and pictures on them like I used to.

The only things I found missing, were colors and LSD, and if there were LSD, the colors would have come out anyways.

There were other videos done this way...tons of them (including a lot of jazz). I can remember watching at least 2-3 hours worth of them on some local PBS station between 1976-79 on my parent's black & white TV. I went to ask my dad something and was mesmerized by what he was watching. But I couldn't help thinking how much better it must look on a color TV. Glad to know I wasn't missing anything and they actually were in black & white.

Tangerine Dream - only knew some later stuff - there's lots of great tracks on youtube from the 70's (with dates)

Funnily enough I'm just after hearing a Brian Eno track (very unexpectedly) on the radio - very mellow, with very countryish sounding guitars (steel?)

I have to wonder how people can work in those nail shops. A paint line seems less hazardous to your health. Maybe they wear a gas mask? Man!! Those fumes are killer!!

Do they make a pair of disco balls to hang from the rear view mirror? Dice would be bad because I'd be tryin' to roll a 7 while driving.
