Ok - do you need a full report like from SIW?

Have you tried logging off and then shutting down?

did you mean to say that UPH Clean is skipping the save settings? in any case, create a new profile and use that profile to shutdown/restart so that we can isolate if it's a profile problem or a hardware setting gone awry.

Yep brand new 'innards' a year ago but issue only started few days ago!

The most logical place to start is what has changed since it has started doing it? Any new programs? Any program updates? Any Windows updates? New drivers? Etc.

All of the above Innuendo!

Log off no help but am now going to try ending processes in Task Manager to see if I can isolate the problem...

Also can't boot past Boot screen sometimes- have use restart button!

is your WinXP patched up to SP3 and all? try using this tool to shutdown in the meantime, Quick ShutDown.

If I were you I'd use MSCONFIG to disable all startup items and all non-MS services and then reboot. See how that works. If all works OK gradually add services and startup items.

If your system doesn't shutdown from this state then there is something wrong in Windows or a driver. Try running SFC /SCANNOW (and have your Windows installation CD handy) to check that Windows files are consistent. If that doesn't find anything I would try upgrading motherboard and graphics drivers.

The other thing I would do is run a full Start > RUN> CHKDSK C: /R /V on your system drive to ensure it is consistent (esp. if you have been using the power and restart buttons a lot).

Also don't forget to look in the Application and System event viewers for come clues (START > RUN > EVENTVWR.MSC)

noticed this option here, the "Clear Pagefile at Shutdown". could you have run any optimiser/boosters that might have turned this on?

When this option is enabled, it causes the system pagefile to be cleared upon clean shutdown. This takes considerable time of the Operating System to flush-out the pagefile, thus causing the slow shutdown. You may disable ClearPageFileAtShutdown option to improve shutdown times. But the pagefile.sys will be intact and accessible via other Operating System, in case or dual or multi-boot.

this should go along with the other suggestions

http://www.microsoft...2&displaylang=en

although the msconfig one will nail down a specific program or driver

Only CCleaner - no Page File options there...

It's working now, but I can't pinpoint culprit yet! Gradually shutting off processes before shutdown - it was somewhere between a-d....

It is, but I have a sneaking suspicion it's my Docks (Beta version) which I have now rolled back to a more stable one...

Will be testing that theory today! ;)

Back to square one!

Not the Dock and the shutdown problem has started up after 3 days of being okay... I've tested all processes from a-d again and it seems to have picked a different one!

It must be a Windows issue as I did a Diagnostic Start up with only essential processes running and it still won't shutdown! Except in Safe Mode?

Time for reinstall as I can't restore an Image either....
