Or, perhaps, a related product?

Looking for something that will update files when a USB stick is inserted. Needs to synchronize, not just transfer, as there could be multiple, bi-directional changes. Transfer involves only two boxes at present time, but could be expanded to three, perhaps four.

Cannot use stick as primary storage, since data files may be in use when stick transferred. Anything functional is going to be kind of a kludge, I'm afraid.

My hope is something that will run upon insert, then alert me if any of the data files are currently in use on that box.

I'm afraid my explanation is kinda cloudy, sorry.

This came up at Life Rocks this week.

Seems it should be capable, but doesn't say it will do what you are saying with usb.
Plenty of options with this 'PureSync'.
It stays running in the background, and I could not find an option for it not to.
Except via msconfig, which worked so it would not autostart with windows.

If i understand correctly what you want is to synchronize a directory with the one on a pen drive in both directions.

If you want to, ah, shall we say, back up somebody else's data without them knowing, you can always go for Switchblade or Hacksaw. I stumbled upon it quite by chance, and thought it was interesting.

OOPs Backup works pretty well and you have to configure it so that the drive where the backup should be is the usb drive then you can do it manually each time that you insert the usb key, but also possible automatically upon usb insertion.

Syncless looked good at first, but shows two (2) significant issues. Firstly, it took eighteen to twenty (18-20) hours to index - ? - forty-six (46) GB, about 16,000+ files. Secondly, and much more importantly to me, it changed the date on every folder and every file, costing me any date history on the files it touched. Not acceptable behavior, methinks.

I love the concept behind the product, but 'twould seem that it's not quite ready for prime time

If you are finding tool to synchronizing 2 folder, Syncless is definitely not the choice as our algorithm is not optimized for 2 folder. However for n-way synchronization, you could take a look at all-way sync and perhap syncless. I didnt do a test on 46gb of files, but the highest i went was 200,000 files around 11gb, and it took like 2~3 hours =/. The time taken is not for indexing,but for writing the metadata , and we are currently looking at how to optimize it =P.

While I've seen good reviews of Genie Timeline, it didn't do too well on my system. Seemed to be always active, causing excessive CPU activity. 'Course, that's an empirical judgement, but 'bout the only kind I can make

. GT just couldn't seem to coexist with something else on the system.

On a slightly different tack, I kinda stay away from GOTD: any necessity for a reinstall kills most all their products. Prolly OK for many users, but I tend to introduce system instabilities - read reinstalls - on a regular basis

What a terrible name for a backup program!

Somehow the serious task of "backing up" & Oops just doesn't match. I can't believe there was a marketing meeting where they actually picked that name. I would love to know the other names that Oops beat out. I'm guessing Oops narrowly surpassed Sometimes Works Backup.

It's kinda like if I'm getting a haircut and the barber utters Oops--not a good vibe at all.

I'm running the trial of Oops!Backup now. I have a Genie Timeline Pro license but just uninstalled it in disgust. For about the fourth time in as many months I've had to start the whole backup process again. The update feature seldom works and has twice failed mid-update rendering my installation kaput. I then have to download the 142 MB installer and run it in "update" mode. I went through the whole rigamorale again today and the service kept shutting before my data was backed up. Enough is enough. You can't re-install the software and point it to an existing archive; it has to re-do the entire backup. Backups for my 250GB of data take HOURS (I have no idea how long because its never been a nice, smooth experience. The backup process always coughs and sputters along). The icing on the cake for me is that the support forum disappeared a few weeks back.

So, I figured that if I am going to have to go through it re-creating my backup, I might as well try out the competition (Oops!Backup). I am VERY impressed so far.

Let's see:

GTL Pro 142MB download
OB 17.5MB download

GTL Pro about 5 or 6 hours to backup 250GB
OB about 1 hour to backup 250GB

If OB stays stable over the coming weeks, I'll be buying a license for sure.

I like the name, its catchy and memorable. When you lose data or forget to do something you go 'Oops!' and I think that's what they are going for. Certainly better than something like 'iBackup Xtreme Pro Live 2011' !

The Neat Net Tricks Software Review Panel just did a fairly detailed review of Oops Backup. As I recall, people were uniformly enthusiastic, which is not all that usual for them.

I have been using V2 since several months, it's been working flawlessly, consumes very little system resources, except maybe for the initial backup. I am still using V2 but will soon install the V3. I like the fact it stores different revisions of a saved file in an elegant way, and you need no software to recover the last version. With V3 you can have you backup on 2 different HDD, increasing safety.

I trialed SuperFlexible (SFFS) recently and it went okay, except for a few weird things Tobias is looking at (maybe it was only a bad setting, but still...). Anyway, I was considering testing both Oops!Backup and GTL. I might give Oops!Backup a try and forget about GTL after all... These testing can be fairly time consuming!!

Note : The review (thanks CyberDiva) is, I must say, extremely encouraging... Last year's review (can't remember where) wasn't as glowing, so that might mean that the company is actually taking criticisms seriously.

Just to note: the Genie Forum is STILL down

As far as I can tell, the forums are gone for all their products. Both the ones I own, Genie Timeline and Genie Backup Manager Pro 8 have been off-line for at least a month or more.
